Barnes & Noble Enters a New Era
The rumors are true: the same private equity firm that bought
Waterstones will buy
Barnes & Noble. As a result, James Daunt will serve as CEO for
both booksellers, and Len Riggio will end his reign over the chain. More
acquisition news (or, well, news of impending news) comes from F+W Media,
where the winner of the auction of its book group will be
announced shortly. In other news, the Indie Playlist promotion has reached
its conclusion and, from last week's New York Rights Fair, here's a look at YA
and middle grade trends.
The Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst, Mass., received a $22 million gift this week, while in the Steel City, the University of Pittsburgh library system has acquired the late George A. Romero's archives. And the books world mourns two great members today: Tin House magazine, which has published its last issue, and cookbook author Maida Heatter, the Queen of Cake, who has died at 102.

The Wolff Howls Again
Michael Wolff is back with a new Trump administration exposé. Here's our
review. Outside of Trumpland, it's a quiet day in publishing.
BookExpo is officially over! Although you can listen to a
podcast recorded there if you're feeling nostalgic. In other expo
news, publishers are on the hunt
for new revenue streams at this year's Licensing Expo in Las
Vegas. And from our magazine this week, an old friend pays tribute
to the late Bob Bernstein.
Wondering what the nine best literary magazines in the world are right now? Here's a fairly wide-ranging list of candidates. Speaking of candidates, this year's Women's Prize for Fiction winner will be announced today, but while you wait, Book Marks has rounded up all the 21st Century winners of the award for your education. And the New York Times has kindly put together a guide for what to do with the zillion tote bags clogging up your apartment.
Licensing Expo 2019: Publishers Hunt New Revenue
Streams
A number of publishers and licensors exhibiting at or attending this year’s Licensing Expo in Las Vegas are looking to license their proprietary, book-based brands to manufacturers of toys, arts and crafts, apparel, and other products. The goal is not only to create new revenue streams, but also to use the expanded retail presence to sell more books. more »

"Short on policy analysis and long on intrigue and gleefully vicious (and entertaining) character sketches, Wolff's gossipy account relies, he admits, on not-unimpeachable sources with axes to grind, especially former Trump adviser and right-wing provocateur Steve Bannon, who is quoted so much that he is virtually a coauthor." more »

BookExpo Comes To a Close
We're in the final stretch! Which means booksellers have weighed
in on the big books of the show for adults
and children
alike. And while indie bookstores are integral to
the industry and keep growing in
number and profits, as two panels found, another noted that there
was still a dismaying slow start to
sales in 2019. Plus, at the New York Rights Fair, three agents and
an editor discussed how translated
books can become bestsellers.
The latest celebrity to announce an autobiography or memoir is Blondie singer Debbie Harry, whose book Face It is due later this year. Tony Robbins's forthcoming book has been scrapped by S&S following accusations of sexual harassment, BuzzFeed reports. And Literary Hub has rounded up the most cursed days for writers, just in case you want to protect yourself against potential writing pitfalls.

Back Home on the Javits Floor
You can't go home again, Thomas Wolfe once wrote. Clearly, he
was not familiar with the Javits Center, home away from home once more for
publishers through the end of the week. And what a busy house it already is.
The show kicked off
with a wide-ranging keynote yesterday morning and the show floor was
abuzz by the afternoon—and that's not even including the Adult Book
Editors' Buzz Panel. And, of course, the New York Rights Fair has joined the
Javits family this year. Drop on by and say hello!
Outside of Manhattan's favorite steel-and-glass box, Pottermore has announced that it will release four new Harry Potter stories next month, the Bookseller reports. At Esquire, a new oral history tells of the indulgent literary scene that bubbled up at Bennington College during the 1980s. At the New York Times, author Ibram X. Kendi has put together an anti-racist reading list of books to help America transcend its racist heritage. And in case you're thinking of a road trip and need some motivation, the Mount Victory Oil Company has compiled a list of 2019's top 12 car books.

Indigo's Sales Slump; Clover Press Launches
Indigo Books & Music followed a record fiscal 2018 with a decline in
its fiscal 2019 results. Ted Adams follows his departure from IDW
by launching
Clover Press. Macmillan has followed a number of publishers to
lower Manhattan, leaving the iconic (and old) Flatiron Building. A senior
editor at Swoon Reads/Feiwel & Friends reflects on
the move. And the president of BMM Worldwide offers her
take on the new Jerusalem International Book Forum.
The New York Times obtained an early copy of Michael Wolff’s Siege and said it is unlikely to generate the buzz of Fire and Fury. The latest presidential tell-all also has a reporter at the Atlantic asking: "What more can we learn about a president who is already so heavily exposed?" In the next few months, bulk Amazon orders are poised to dry up for thousands of mostly smaller suppliers, according to a new report. The book industry mourns Tony Horwitz, a historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who died at age 60 on Monday. In brighter news, a new survey on reading habits indicates that consumers still prefer physical books.
Indigo Posts Fiscal 2019 Loss on 3% Revenue Decline
After a record-breaking fiscal 2108 which ended March 30, 2018, Indigo Books & Music reported a 3% drop in sales in fiscal 2019 and a net loss of C$36.8 million compared to earnings of C$21.9 million last year. more »

Winter Is Coming for B&T This Summer
The sun will set on Baker & Taylor's retail wholesale
business on July 15, but there are a handful of
important dates to know about in between now and then.
Booksellers, take note! In the religion and spirituality space, Christian
publishing has caught up on
the audiobook trend, while in the e-publishing world, charitable
organization Worldreader, which delivers e-books to disadvantaged communities
globally, added three
million users last year. Plus, at Haymarket, a campaign for a book
on abortion has surpassed its
goal on Kickstarter.
In New York, Mayor Bill de Blasio has cut library funding after using the Park Slope branch as a satellite office for years, the New York Post reports—yet somehow he still thinks bookish New Yorkers will vote for him for president. Readers looking for what to read this summer could ask the New York Times or perhaps consult Merriam-Webster's staffers, although we at PW would make a few suggestions of our own. Finally, the children's book world mourns the loss of Judith Kerr, author of The Tiger Who Came to Tea, who has died at 95.
Clock Is Ticking on B&T Retail Shutdown

PRH Empire Gets a Little Bigger
Don't call it an acquisition! Penguin Random House has taken a
minority stake in Sourcebooks, which PRH US CEO Madeline McIntosh
and Sourcebooks publisher and CEO Dominique Raccah note will have little
effect on the smaller publisher's day-to-day. At Hachette, a few changes are coming to the
sales side of things. Streaming video shopping network
Talkshoplive, which offers social media-driven retail, has partnered with
ReaderLink on book fulfillment. And in Sweden, Storytel continues its
global expansion.
Today in news you should read while listening to the world's smallest violin, there are so many New York Times journalists netting book deals that the paper is worried there won’t be anyone left in the newsroom, Vanity Fair reports. In Iowa, reports PBS NewsHour, even a book club is a 2020 campaign stop. (Yes, this piece mentions Mayor Pete's love for Ulysses.) In sadder news, Binyavanga Wainaina, the prizewinning Kenyan writer who explored themes of postcolonialism, gender, and sexual identity, has died at 48.

A Busy Day for Publishing
Some days, the news just doesn't stop coming. At Macmillan, the
news is Hilary Mantel, whose final Cromwell novel Henry Holt will
publish next year. At Scholastic, the news is Dick Robinson, who was honored at
last night's PEN Gala alongside Bob Woodward and Anita Hill. At
HMH, the news is a new plan to
service indie booksellers, the latest trade publisher to set up a
direct sales service following B&T's big retail wholesale exit. Then
there's the Man Booker International Prize, won for the first time by an Arabic author.
And sad news comes out of UVA Press: Mark Saunders, its director, has died suddenly
at 53.
Down under, the Penguin Random House publishing director for Australia and New Zealand has stepped down, Books + Publishing reports. The Guardian writes that John le Carré and Neil Gaiman have joined other British writers in protesting Brexit. Germany has bequeathed thousands of the papers of Max Brod, a confidant of Franz Kafka, to Israel, the AP reports. And at the Ringer, there's a meaty profile of Ron Dotrice, the man who spoke George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series into existence...as an audiobook narrator, of course.
