S. Mei Sheng FrazierYou have just over one day to enter this year's Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Contest sponsored by Winning Writers. Please submit by midnight Eastern US time on Friday night. S. Mei Sheng Frazier will judge. We will award $4,000 in prizes and publish the winners on our website. We'll also announce the results in our newsletter (50,000+ subscribers) and Twitter feed (75,000+ followers).
$1,500 Tom Howard Prize for a poem in any style or genre
$1,500 Margaret Reid Prize for a poem that rhymes or has a traditional style
10 Honorable Mentions will receive $100 each (any category)
• Entries may be published or unpublished
• You may submit any number of entries
• Fee: $10 per poem
• Each poem may have up to 250 lines
• We use Submittable for your convenience

How To Festival 5, Holbeck Underground Ballroom, Sunday 2 October

The 5th How To Festival takes place this Sunday, with a Halloween theme:



A DAY PACKED FULL OF EVENTS WITH A DELICIOUSLY FEARSOME FLAVOUR.
 
 
Join us at the Holbeck Underground Ballroom this Sun 2 October
for a day packed full of events, workshops and entertainment with a deliciously fearsome flavour!
Our fifth "How To…" Festival delivers performance, demonstrations, activities and food brought to you by friends old and new  
Manjit's Kitchen, Handheld Arts, Joseph Lidster, Douglas Thompson, Harrison Richards and Rory Scammell.
And because it’s the How To… Festival you can learn new skills in £paywhatyoudecide creative workshops thoughout the day; learn how to make the entertainment and the food.
At 11.00am Cooking With Manjit.  Back by popular demand, Manjit’s Kitchen lead a workshop where she demonstrates how to cook delicious vegetarian Indian dishes and curries, and you can then have a go at creating them yourselves – all ingredients and equipment are provided for you.
At 2:00pm Scripting Suspense  Radio & TV writer Joe Lidster (Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, Wizards Vs Aliens, Hetty Feather)
shares scriptwriting secrets. Learn how to create intrigue, master suspense and find out how to make characters truly creepy!
At 3:00pm Horror-gami with Handheld Arts  Make a spooky papercut silhouette Halloween lantern with Handheld Arts.
This workshop is suitable for ages 10+ and will involve participants working independently with a craft knife. All materials will be provided. ALL CREATIONS CAN BE TAKEN HOME!
At 4:00pm “Zipper-Face” Horror Make Up  Get a “head” start on your halloween fancy dress outfit, as theatre artist Douglas Thompson returns
to the HUB to show you how to master the “zipper face” horror make up. Douglas has been working for 15 years as a theatre artist and is an expert in mask making and makeup techniques. He has been a regular workshop leader for schools and youth services and has performed and exhibited his work in venues across the country.
At 5:00pm – Harrison Richards – The Perceptionist  Harrison has predicted the future for celebrities on TV, demonstrated direct mind-to-mind communication on the radio and performed his unbelievable mind magic at numerous events up and down the country. He combines the ancient and mysterious mind reading methods of the past with cutting edge magic, psychology and a healthy dose of humour. His skills will amaze and delight – taking you on a journey into the unknown that will leave you lucky, lucky people genuinely open mouthed in amazement.
We’ll break for dinner at 6pm – Enjoy delicious food from Manjit’s Kitchen and refreshments from the HUB’s £1 bar with free tea and coffee and live music from Rory Scammell and his Hurdy Gurdy!

In early October, National Poetry Day woos the poetic amongst us.

Whether you speak your love in a warm Yorkshire accent, a sweet Urdu ghazal or to beats like Jay-Z, come and share it with us. 

Join us in celebrating our love for language in our distinctive local styles at our Open Mic
