Blog Break and more things to do in Leeds and New York

I will be taking a blog break for a week from today until Sunday and as the place I am going to has no reliable broadband, I won't be posting until my return. To be going on with until then, here are a few more things to do: YOU CAN BET ...we're socially distanced Saturday 5th September at 7.30pm Due to popular demand...go with us...we're bringing back our Lockdown gameshow for one last 2020 outing. Oh, and this time it’s with a 7-piece band! Come on down and enjoy the derring-do and clumsy buffoonery of 3 physical challenges; musical performances from the extraordinary Slung Low House Band; and a special guest appearance from Gina O’Tonic. May or may not include Safety Supervisor David Anthony Bevan Lane depending on whether there are any explosives*. We’ll be serving some food, the bar will be open and you’ll be using the Slung Low headphone system so the sound will be tip-top! Please dress for the weather. Tickets must be booked in advance. *There are. Get Your Tickets SEE YOU THERE! Some very generous people donated a sizeable chunk to our funds, with the explicit instruction it was for a lift for The Club. So we've agreed to forge ahead with a campaign to try make the club accessible for everyone, starting with said lift. Please help us spread the word. Old Friends & New @ Seven

Coming up this weekend we've some old friends in terms of bands & artists, plus one or two less familiar, performing in Seven's Courtyard .

Our weekend pop-up, from this evening, Thursday 27 August 5pm until and including Monday 31 August is Luigi's Street Food Italiano, fabulous Italian food for eating in and takeaway.

Tomorrow, Friday 28 August, 6 -8pm a welcome return to one of our first post lockdown bands, Tim & Simon.  Dusting down some classic covers to get Friday evening off to a flying start, Tim Earnshaw from Rewind will perform with musician neighbour, Simon Allen in Seven's courtyard. Pay What You Feel donations.

On Saturday 29 August, 5pm - 7pm, look forward to the Washboard Resonators performing vintage swing, ragtime and jazz. Absolutely guaranteed to lift the spirits and get feet tapping. Organised by Mewl Music. PWYF donations.

Afternoon Jazz on Sunday 30 August 1.30 - 3.30pm, blow the Covid blues away with John “Mr Blues” Taylor!  The music could be described as being quirky blues with the lyrical content on the subject of John’s manifestations of life. Philosophy, poetry, humour and groove! Organised by JazzLeeds. PAYF donations.

Seven is open on Bank Holiday Monday 31 August and with two exciting music events on offer. From 3-3.30pm, as part of Leeds Opera Festival, Neil (singer bass-baritone) and Chloe (violinist) from Northern Opera Group will perform songs from popular 18th century ballard opera including the Beggars Opera, Rosina and Love in a Village. This music would have been showcased in pubs and public spaces in the 1700s and is a flavour of how opera used to be performed.

Also on Monday 31 August 6-8pm, the excellent Soul Persuaders who wowed audiences at Seven just a few weeks ago, return to Seven's Courtyard with another uplifting and lively performance. PAYF donations.

All our music events are fully distanced with table service. Please respect staff wishes if they ask you to move - this will only be for the safety of customers. Also please donate generously - these are tough times for musicians. Events are weather-dependent and maybe moved inside of postponed if it rains..

We look forward to seeing you at Seven very soon. Every £ spent at Seven helps support high quality arts in a local setting.

I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.

Gates of Atlantic

The Culture LP, in partnership with local organizations, debuted this month a public mural arts exhibition called Gates of Atlantic, to celebrate the resilience and unity of the community of East New York.

The exhibition brings together talented artists and local businesses to create a new canvas of expression for the community. Every artist that participated in this expansive art project is of Black or Latinx descent, which furthers the objectives of the community and economic empowerment when it comes to Black culture.

Gates of Atlantic came alive on August 10. It features murals and paintings on the roller doors of many small businesses along Atlantic Avenue from Georgia Avenue to Warwick Street.
