Cleckheaton Writers Group Zoom meeting, Monday 24 August, 5.45pm

Cleckheaton Writers Group met last night on Zoom with Alice, Gemma, Karen and Neil in attendance, Mandy, Sarah and Sam having passed on their apologies.

The minutes from the previous meeting were passed.

WIP updates: Karen had received good feedback from GEA on her bookmap lite and 5k words and she had planned out her new RC WIP and a potential new MS. She has also written some new scenes/chapters on the RC WIP. Gemma has written up to 22k words of her WIP, 700 just that day. She is making notes on research she will need to do on historical treatment practices and she has been trying to expand the smaller characters in the MS. Alice suggested Thackery Medical Museum for the research and Gemma mentioned that she has been to the Mental Health Museum in Wakefield and one in Budapest. Alice has been planning her new WIP and has converted this into a table of events/clues/character relationships and a who's who. The novel is set 10 years ago and she has started writing it at 1100 words. Neil has been researching and booking on online writing courses (one commencing on 5 October for 6 weeks). He has also applied for a content writer position and an IT course for careers advice.

Feedback sessions: Karen had shared a couple of new chapters on her current WIP which was well received. Gemma really liked it and picked up on the twin brothers (Karen revealed some of her plans for this including the heroine going on dates with both yet thinking it is the same person). Gemma felt the first chapter shared was intriguing with the will and the expectation (she did not want to reveal too much as Alice and Neil had yet to read it and pass on their feedback). She enjoyed the unexpected turn, felt the Italian Mama's voice was brilliant (e.g. don't shorten your names and I can't cuddle a career!) as she could hear her voice loud and clear and it felt true to life. Sam passed his feedback via email as he was unable to attend the meeting. He felt that the chapters flowed really well, as previously, and that he enjoyed it, finding it easier to follow the characters with the more frequent dialogue tags and enjoying the Italian that was thrown in. Alice and Neil will pass on their feedback via email to Karen.

CW comps/workshops/events: Karen informed members that she attended a FB Live event with New Zealand based crime author Sally Rigby on Cavendish & Walker. As both a traditionally published and self-published author, she outlined her writing practices. The feed is available to view again for those who join the Cavendish & Walker FB page. Sally kindly offered to speak to Karen about self-publishing and gave out her email address to do so. Sally will also be doing another FB Live with The Fiction Cafe Book Club.

Writing plans: Karen will be writing some more scenes/chapters on her current WIP and will be emailing Sally Rigby. Gemma will be writing more on her WIP. Alice hopes to complete 25% of her MS then view her plan in order to decide on the second quarter. Neil hopes to join Alice, Gemma and Karen at Ribbon Tree in Cleckheaton on Thursday afternoon to do some writing. Any other CWG members are welcome to join but please contact Karen in order for her to pre-book tables due to COVID restrictions.

The next meeting will take place on Monday 7 September.
