August News From Slung Low
Hi Friends,
We hope you're all well.
We know this month's newsletter's a little later than usual
but we wanted to squeeze in a few extra bits that weren't
confirmed early August: bits that start with 'per' and end with
'formances'. Eeep!
But before we get to those, let's take a quick look back over the
last month (and a bit).

CULTURAL
COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Our Summer Term closed with an online cooking session with
Manjit's Kitchen. Not only did the Club's Lounge smell delicious
but we had a real laugh as people cooked along at home (the
blender seemed to be a particularly messy issue) and
shared pics of their creations.
Huge thanks to Manjit, Oliver (acting), Lucy (movement) and David
(whittling) for all their hard work and positive energy. And all
of you who participated wholeheartedly in a very different term
for us. We had some wonderful feedback, and will therefore be
repeating some favourites in the future.
Keep your eyes peeled for news coming later this month on our
Autumn term, which is not just online (whoop) but in
real-life too: at The Holbeck and in the new classroom in
the Slung Low Wood.
LS11 ART GALLERY
Since Lockdown has eased, we have dismantled the 164 artworks
displayed on lampposts around Holbeck and Beeston.
Thank you to all the talented artists who generously shared their
work with us and thousands of people in LS11.
You can still explore virtually here or visit the permanent mural by George
Addy inspired by the gallery in Cross Flatts
Park.
OPERA NORTH - WHISTLESTOP OPERA
Earlier this week, we were lucky to host the first performance of
Opera North's 'Hansel and Gretel', part of their Whistlestop
Opera Tour. The audience laughed, cheered and danced, and
clearly had a brilliant afternoon.
Thank you to our musical pals at Opera North and those who joined
us.

BET WE'RE SOCIALLY DISTANCED
Due to popular demand...go with us...we're bringing back our
Lockdown gameshow for one last 2020 outing. To celebrate our new
permanent outdoor auditorium at The Holbeck, everyone's
favourite gameshow* will be live for a family audience on
Saturday 5th September at 7:30pm.
There will be special guests, including 'Slung Low's House Band',
food and booze.
You’ll listen to the show through our special headphone system so
the sound will be tip-top!

GOOD BLOOD
Earlier that day, LS11's very own Keira Martin, in collaboration
with Sioda Adams, brings us 'Good Blood': a look at the
relationship of two sisters through dance, live music, song and
storytelling. Hilarious, nostalgic and familiar family scenarios
that shed light on the bonds that hold us together, the people
that make us who we are and the ties that bind us.
You’ll listen to the show through our special headphone system so
the sound will be tip-top!

PROVOKED TO MADNESS BY THE BRUTALITY OF WEALTH
Gobscure comes to The Holbeck with this playfully political piece
of theatre.
One homeless hostel 'support worker' told us 'what dya need
books for yr homeless?' Our revenge was 13 years of reading,
graduating 2016 from the open university.
This visual performance is about asking questions (psychiatry
prefers calling this 'oppositional defiance disorder'), regaining
our voices and the importance of remembering. Along the way the
audience is offered genuine participation.

Keep an eye on our socials for
more upcoming shows.

Some of our
volunteers are heading back to work. Some need to reduce their hours. And
some need a well-earned break.
