New on our blog

The Carolina parakeet is the poster bird for our Audubon’s Birds of America exhibition. In this new blog, our Assistant Curator of Vertebrate Biology, Zena Timmons, explores the decline of this bird species, the information revealed by our specimens, and how an extinct species can be recreated through taxidermy.

Creative Kirklees Newsletter 26 April 2022

Welcome back everyone – we hope you had a lovely Easter break and managed to get creative outdoors in the lovely weather we were so lucky to have.

This week we’d like to tell you about a couple of art projects in Huddersfield that have happened thanks to Historic England’s High Street Heritage Action Zone programme and with the support of Kirklees Council:

The Joy of a Roar has seen over 100 people involved in 16 workshops making striking paper lion masks and modelling them to produce 40 vibrant and unique portraits which are now on display as a pop-up outdoor gallery around St George’s Square, with the main focus of the exhibition on Station Street.  Secondly, Spirit of the Square is a brand new mosaic artwork by Abigail Barker and is now Installed in The Hive Café, and celebrates the cultural significance of St George’s Square, and how it contributes to a happy, healthy community.  Be sure to go check these out if you are out and about in Huddersfield.

We are delighted to see another Festival return later this week - the &Piano Festival, with performances and showcases taking place over the first two weeks of May, Woven in Kirklees are back with a great selection of INTERWOVEN activities also taking place over the same period and whatever your favourite creative activity might be, we have some great activities coming up for you which you can find by scrolling down the newsletter with more on our website of course!

We hope you've had a lovely Easter break, perhaps accompanied by a bottle of Filey Bay Double Oak #1? We're all enjoying how spring-like it's been, especially with the lambs in the field over the road skipping about.

After asking you to save-the-date for the 30th July for our Open Day, tickets and masterclasses are now available to buy. Follow the link further down the email to book your spot. (Don't forget, we'll be launching Filey Bay Yorkshire Day 2022 that day too).

As ever, lots has been happening here on the coast and further afield, with David in Germany and Joe about to go to Switzerland so pour yourself a dram, get comfy and start scrolling...

This month in Hunmanby...

Distilling: Virgin-oak matured whisky, Barrel-aged lager, casks
Growing: Spring growth, Wildlife
Enjoying: Open Day 2022 Tickets, Whisky & Beer Evening with Wold Top
Living: Porsches, Tractors, Filey Bay in Italy, Watching with Whisky

Distilling

At the distillery

As we're sure you know, our first virgin-oak matured whisky was bottled and released earlier this month. Fruity and spicy, Filey Bay Double Oak #1 is really distinctive and complex and we've loved hearing your thoughts on it! It's not far off selling out, so if you'd like a restock, then head to the website now.

Whisky Director Joe has been spending most of his time in the warehouse lately, nosing a lot of different casks to see what's right for future releases (near and far). We've got a couple of Single Casks in the plan for early summer so keep watching your emails for news of a ballot.

(Don't worry, he's been working harder than this picture would suggest!)

Breaking news!

Just now as we've been doing final checks on this email, almost ready to press send, we received the great news that Spirit of Yorkshire Cream Liqueur has won bronze at the World Liqueur Awards 2022! What a way to finish a Wednesday! We'll be celebrating with a glass tonight.

Free UK Mainland delivery when you spend over £85.

Don't forget that we offer free delivery to UK Mainland addresses when you spend over £85 on our website. The discount is automatically applied at check out.

Growing

Spring Barley

Tom made the most of the warm, dry weather at the end of March and got the spring barley all planted in a week. After a few weeks, it's already starting to show really well and we're really happy with how it's looking. Small shoots now but it will be distilled in 18 months and officially whisky by 2026!

Spring on the farm means wildlife. The woods and garden are full of goldfinches, yellowhammers and blue-tits, with skylarks, curlews and buzzards in the fields. In the dry dale at the back of the farm, the cowslips and gorse are out, giving everything a lovely yellow glow.

In recognition of Earth Day, we’re putting together a series of pieces diving into the detail of our field to bottle process.
Read the first piece here.

Enjoying

Brew-house meets Still-house
20th May, 7pm

We're extremely proud of our Filey Bay IPA Finish, and the barrel-aged beers we've made in conjunction with Wold Top Brewery. On the 20th May, we're hosting a beer and whisky evening with Alex (Head Brewer at Wold Top) where we'll be discussing everything from malt to casks to lager, and what makes a fantastic barrel-aged beer.

Join us for our Open Day 2022!

Tickets are now on-sale for our 2022 Open Day. Not only will it be a fantastic day of whisky tastings, tours, masterclasses and music, we'll also be launching Filey Bay Yorkshire Day 2022, our annual summer Special Release.

We're so pleased that we can host it again 'properly' in person and we really hope that you can join us for it!

Living

Tractors and Porsches

Even Jeremy Clarkson with his Lamborghini tractor would have been jealous this weekend. Not only did the local Porsche Owners Club come for a joint tour of the brewery and the distillery (making our car parks quite a lot fancier than most weekdays), but a tractor rally also passed through the farm, organised by a nearby village in memory of a local lady and raising money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

We're not sure who was more excited... co-founder Tom or his three year old grandson Arthur!

SOY around the world

It might be spring-like and sunny here now but earlier in the ski season, Christie shared a picture as she enjoyed a dram of Filey Bay in the Dolomites – what a backdrop!

And speaking of Italy...

Introducing: Watching with Whisky

A new newsletter feature, each month one of the team will be sharing their favourite thing to watch (or read) with a dram.

First up, Marketing Director Jenni has been really enjoying Stanley Tucci's "Searching for Italy" on the BBC.

"I've loved learning about the detail that the different producers around Italy go into, especially how patient they have to be with the cheeses and curing the hams; so many similarities with how we make our whisky. The way it's shot is absolutely gorgeous and has made me desperate to be back drinking €1 espresso in a sun-drenched piazza."

Off to Italy this summer? Then look out for Filey Bay! 'Cuzziol Craft' were our first international importers and have been great supporters of the distillery and Wold Top for years. Filey Bay whiskies are available in restaurants, bars and specialist shops from Sicily to Venice.

That's it for April! Cheers!

If you have any comments, would like to share what you're watching with whisky, or show how you're spreading the Spirit of Yorkshire / Filey Bay whisky word around the world or at home, then simply reply to this email or tag #SOYaroundtheworld or #WatchingWithWhisky on your social posts.

In good spirit,

The Distillery Team

FANE

Booking open for Monty Don, Lucy Worsley & Kaleb Cooper

Did you know that Agatha Christie surfed in Hawaii and loved sports cars? The Queen of History Lucy Worsley will uncover the real Queen of Crime. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or green-fingered novice, join Monty Don as he shares tales from his career in gardening and celebrates the natural world.

For one night only in Bath, Kaleb Cooper of Clarkson's Farm will muse on what it was like to become an overnight celebrity and why nothing beats sitting on a tractor and ploughing a field.

Tickets for our new Fane Online event with The Secret Barrister & Harriet Johnson are also on sale. Plus, don't miss out on Test Match Special Live with Stephen Fry and our exclusive virtual event with Viola Davis this weekend.
