"Writers let their characters speak. Not in the repetitious monotones of the everyday, rather, in the demi-poetry known as dialogue."

- ROBERT MCKEE

The Power of Dialogue

Real life conversations are filled with awkward pauses, poor word choices and pointless repetitions. Dialogue is not a conversation, it must have purpose.

When writing dialogue, keep in mind these fundamental principles:

Firstly, dialogue requires compression and economy. Screen dialogue in particular must say the maximum in the fewest words possible.

Secondly, dialogue is not a meaningless exchange of words between two parties, but a series of character actions and reactions. It must have direction. Each line or exchange executes a step in design that builds and arcs a scene around a turning point.

Skillfully crafted dialogue wields the double power to express the effable, while illuminating the ineffable. It is the writer’s foremost vehicle for character content and driving your story towards a meaningful conclusion.

Learn to craft artful, impactful speech at McKee’s STORY Seminar.

How Limitations Inspire Creativity

"Don’t give in to laziness; we need artistry and discipline. Set creative limitations that demand the fullest use of imagination and sweat."

- ROBERT MCKEE

At some point in the creative process, every writer must answer certain fundamental questions: Which genre or combination of genres are you writing? From whose point of view does the story take place? How will you design your cast? And many more.

If you take the easy, undisciplined path that ignores such key questions, the unrestrained freedom usually ends in a tangled sprawl. But the discipline required by certain creative limitations can inspire stunning works of brilliance.

Talent is like a muscle: without something to push against, it atrophies.

"Nothing moves forward in a story except through conflict."

- ROBERT MCKEE

What Drives Your Story?

Conflict is to story what sound is to music. Both story and music are temporal arts, and the single most difficult task of the temporal artist is to hook and hold our interest, then carry us through time without an awareness of its passage.

Conflict is more than an aesthetic principle; it is the soul of story.

If a writer fails to properly grasp the principle of conflict, they fail for one of two reasons. Either their stories are a glut of meaningless and absurdly violent struggles, or a vacancy of meaningful and honestly expressed conflict.

Life is about the ultimate questions of finding love and self-worth, of bringing serenity to inner chaos, of titanic social inequalities around us, of time running out. Life is conflict. The writer must decide where and how to orchestrate this struggle, with skill and precision, and use it to propel their storytelling.

Works of art are driven by the conflict of life.

"Robert McKee’s teachings are timeless. Story principles are just the tip of the iceberg. He is a master of human behavior and prepares us to deal with conflicts in any context... He is bravely simple and extraordinarily relevant."

- JONI GALVAO

Plot Leader, THE PLOT COMPANY

A story isn't just moments of activity, personality or emotion. Master storytellers must seek events that contain all the above, whilst propelling their story forward with conflict that will compel audiences to stay riveted from fade in to fade out.

Robert McKee returns to the stage this spring to deliver his 3-day story masterclass. Join us and learn to create tales that will hook, hold, and wow audiences for years to come...

"Amateurs employ doubtful taste and weaker judgment; professionals criticize their work severely, some times excessively."

- ROBERT MCKEE

What Would a Professional Writer Do?

Professional writers may or may not receive critical acclaim, but they are in control of their craft, improving over the years and making a living from the art. A struggling writer may, at times, produce quality, but day-to-day they cannot consistently make their talent perform. The difference between these two is simple.

When a struggling writer realizes a scene doesn’t work they make a coffee, or break for lunch. In the afternoon, they’ll tinker with the scene, kill some time on Youtube, before scrolling through their social media feeds.

A professional writer writes and rewrites, putting in the long, tough days, knowing that the road from day one to final draft is never smooth, and rarely paved with cat videos.

You must write every day, line by line, page by page. And regardless of whether you make a living from your art, you must be professional.

Join your peers at Robert McKee's STORY Seminar this spring and equip yourself with the critical tools you need to bring your talent to bear on a daily basis.

"The novice plunges ahead, counting solely on experience, thinking the life he’s lived and the stories he’s seen or read give him something to say and the way to say it."

- ROBERT MCKEE

Why Desire Is Just the Start

An excerpt from Jack London’s letter to Jess Dorman, Oct. 26, 1914:

"If you think you can jump in right now, without any apprenticeship, and lay bricks as well as a four, five or six years' apprenticed bricklayer; if you think you can jump in on the floor and nail on shoes on ten horses as well as a man who has served a three, four, or five years' apprenticeship at shoeing horses on the floor; if you think you can jump in and nail laths, or spread plaster, or do concrete work, without previous experience, better or as well as the men who have served their three, four, and five years of apprenticeship; - in short, if you think that a vastly better-paid trade than that, namely, the writing-game, can be achieved in your first short story not yet written, or long story not yet written, why go ahead my boy and jump to it, and I'll pat you on the back - pat you on the back! The world will crush you in for the great genius that you are if you can do such a thing. In the meantime have a little patience and learn the trade."

Hundreds of thousands of stories are written every year, but of these only a handful are of real quality. Today’s new writers rush to the computer without first learning their craft.

The desire to create stories of lasting quality is not enough. Writing tests the maturity and insight of the writer, her knowledge of society, nature, and the human heart. It demands both vivid imagination and powerful analytical thought.

But above all, as Jack London noted, it requires learning the craft.
