Scalarama is an annual celebration of cinema taking  place every September. A month long season of screenings taking place across the world at a wide range of venues, with all different types of exhibitors showcasing films from across the history of cinema and from all parts of the world. Yorkshire Silents presents WAXWORKS(PG) Thu 15 September 7:30pm at Slung Low's HUB    A young author is hired by the owner of a wax museum to write tales about his most popular figures, Haroun al Raschid, Ivan the Terrible and Jack the Ripper. Entranced by the owner’s beautiful daughter, he sets to work writing. With each new story, the author and his new friend find themselves pulled inside the progressively nightmarish worlds that he has invented… One of the most strikingly Expressionist films, Waxworks stars some of the finest German actors of the silent era Emil Jannings, Conrad Veidt, Werner Krauss and William Dieterle in three delightfully haunting stories. German director Paul Leni (1885-1929)  is best recalled for his later Hollywood films, most notably the stylish THE CAT AND THE CANARY, although WAXWORKS shows him very near the peak of gifts. It is also very clearly an homage of sorts to THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI; not only would Leni cast two of that film's actors in major roles, he drew from the film's style for both sets and cinematography.
