Word Club Friday 30 September

The Word Club is coming up in September:

September’s WORD CLUB will take place on Friday 30th September 2016, from 7.30 pm, at The Chemic Tavern, Leeds. Our headliners this month are Robert Powell, Pam Scobie and Howard Benn.

Tickets will be on sale for November's all ticket WORD CLUB SPECIAL from Friday 30th September. Our line up will include: Kate Fox, Antony Dunn, Becky Cherriman and Tom Weir. Tickets are £8. There are only 50 available so I suggest you come along to September's WORD CLUB with cash. If you'd like to pay by Paypal or cheque, message me from 30th September. These methods will incurr a £2.00 booking fee.

We will be graced by the presence of some fabulous open micers too so come along and join us. 3 minute Open Mic slots are available on the night on a first come first serve basis but we usually fit everyone in.

Robert Powell was born and raised in Ottawa, Canada, and now lives in York. He has worked for many years in the fields of journalism, photography, architecture, and the arts. From 1997-2015 he was Director of Beam, a company creating projects & programmes across the arts, including Wakefield Lit Fest. Robert’s first collection Harvest of Light was published in 2007 by Canada’s Stone Flower Press, and has been adapted into a live performance. His second collection, All, was published in 2015 by Valley Press. He was the winner of the 2012 Elmet Prize judged by Kathleen Jamie, and his poems and stories have appeared in Bridport: The Winners (2010), Dreamcatcher, Orbis and The Rialto, as well as numerous Canadian journals. He is currently working on a collaborative project with York-born artist Jake Attree.

In her distant youth. Pam Scobie enjoyed a brief flirtation with the professional theatre, during which she inflicted her definitive Widow Twankey on the paying public in everything from "Macbeth" to "Coronation Street", and wrote plays for a Theatre-in-Education company.  There followed a necessary career break when she switched to historical  novels for young people.  She began writing poetry in 2008 for a poetry café in Bridlington in order to wake up her performance muscles,  and was initially disconcerted to discover that she was expected to produce something new every month. However, she liked the people, so she stuck at it. Her work is not necessarily confessional, although, like all of us, she draws on experience as well as observation. Whatever the content of her first collection might suggest, she hasn't actually murdered anybody.  She is, however, currently researching a series of comedy detective novels featuring bizarre homicides....

Howard Benn is a former art student, and got into poetry through Becky Cherriman about six years ago. He has performed at Headingley Litfest with his creative writing group and recently performed at the Poetry at the Parsonage Festival in Haworth as a part of the WORD CLUB team. Howard is a volunteer for an art therapy group. Howard notes that the mentally ill are the most creative people he’s ever worked with. He also designs wallpaper, which has driven him mad for the last 15 years!

And remember, the first rule of WORD CLUB is: WE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT WORD CLUB….SO SPREAD THE WORD!

The Chemic Tavern, 9 Johnston Street, Woodhouse, Leeds. LS6 2NG.
