Scalarama is an annual celebration of cinema taking place every September. The season aims to unite all those who are passionate about showing films to one another, and to champion communal film watching and the cinema experience. Screenings taking place across the world at a wide range of venues, with all different types of exhibitors showcasing films from across the history of cinema  and from all parts of the world. Slung Low are delighted to team up once again with Yorkshire Silents for this special event.

WAXWORKS (Das Wachsfigurenkabinett) Directed by Paul Leni, 1924 83 minutes
A young author is hired by the owner of a wax museum to write tales about his most popular figures, Haroun al Raschid, Ivan the Terrible and Jack the Ripper. Entranced by the owner’s beautiful daughter, he sets to work writing. With each new story, the author and his new friend find themselves pulled inside the progressively nightmarish worlds that he has invented…
One of the most strikingly Expressionist films, Waxworks stars some of the finest German actors of the silent era (Emil Jannings, Conrad Veidt, Werner Krauss and William Dieterle) in three delightfully haunting stories.
Performing live: Jonathan Best (piano)

Where do all the dead pigeons go? I could give you the answer right now… but it would ruin the show. Between you and me, I’m still not sure.
With felt-tip pens, and his ex-girlfriend’s overhead projector, Scott Turnbull takes us on a journey through space and time. This frolic of cartoon and comic reason miraculously weaves science fiction, memoir, parable, fairytale and farce… it’s weird, fast and inventive.
Pigeons in this show are fictional and bear no relevance to pigeons existing or dead.
