Minutes of Cleckheaton Writers Group meeting 10 June 2019

The Cleckheaton Writers Group took place on Monday 10 June, 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library with Gemma, Mark, Mark S, Karen and Cassie in attendance, Sarah, Alice, Kathy and Pauline having passed on their apologies.

The minutes from the previous meeting were passed and Karen informed members about the Friends of Cleckheaton Library AGM which will take place at 6pm on the evening of Monday 17 June at the library where nominations are being sought for volunteer Chair and Vice Chair, and volunteers for both a social media and a fundraising role.

WIP updates: Gemma has been editing/deleting words from her MS and she has agreed to beta read her friend Sophie's new book 'Magpie.' Mark has written another chapter of his WIP from the POV of a different character but believes it will help him with the next chapter from the POV of the character he was stuck on. He classifies his novel as heroic fantasy. Mark S has written a fifth of a novel, the narrative of which is in his head. His novel is 1950s historical fiction. Cassie has rewritten the story that she shared at the last meeting. Karen has finished the second draft of her romantic supsense WIP, which now has to be edited before sending out to beta readers (deadline for submission end of August) and has begun to work on writing the rest of her Digital Heroin WIP, some of which is in her head, but some she will have to plot out.

Feedback sessions: Mark shared the prelude to his novel, Age of Decadence, which was well received. It left members with many questions, so drew us in. He has already completed 83k words and this is his second book, the first one Love and War, is also set in the same fantasy world. Karen shared a chapter from Digital Heroin. The chapter was three-quarters of the way into the novel and the group felt it had great pace but one long sentence needed to be broken up into a couple of short ones. Cassie shared her short story Absolutely mindblowing which was well received. Following feedback from Alice at the last meeting, Cassie had felt the previous version was too 'list-y' and was happier with the edits. There was an instance where the tense changed but had a great circular ending.

CW comps/workshops/events: The Bridport Prize is still open for entries and the Bradford Literature Festival is upcoming (Karen has already booked a pair of tickets to the book lauch of A. A. Dhand's 4th novel at Bradford Waterstones on the evening of Friday 28 June). Karen also informed members about the creative writing hour that is run at The Hive in Shipley at a cost of £3 per session (sessions run 1.30-2.30pm on Wednesdays). Gemma reminded members about the new children's bookshop in Mirfield.

The next meeting will take place on Monday 24 June 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library.
