Unveil Ireland’s Hidden West

Hi

Where cliffs dive into the Atlantic and seabirds dance in the salty breeze, join us on a fully guided hiking adventure along the northwest coastline on our brand new trip to Ireland’s Hidden West, first departing in May 2025.

Experience the awe-inspiring cliffs of Slieve League, among the highest in Europe, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the rugged shore. Explore Ireland’s legacy as the ‘land of saints and scholars’ at a scarcely visited monastic island in Fermanagh’s Lakelands. Marvel at the iconic Benbulben, a table-top mountain that dominates the skyline and is steeped in myth and legend. And witness the power of nature at one of Ireland’s most dramatic coastal locations, Downpatrick Head.

Leave the crowds behind and discover Ireland’s Hidden West. With breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and unforgettable experiences around every corner, this journey will leave you with memories that last a lifetime.

Come along to be one of the first to unveil Ireland’s Hidden West in 2025.

September in the Kent Downs

Read on for our latest updates and a peek at what's happening in the Kent Downs National Landscape and aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark over the coming weeks.

This month, we're saying hello to the Shorne Woods pony, celebrating chough conservation success, finding pond potential at Bore Place, and getting excited for the 2024 SALT+EARTH Festival!

First Wild Kentish Chough to Breed in Over 200 Years

The once-extinct red-billed chough is making a remarkable comeback in Kent! This May, a historic moment unfolded at Dover Castle with the hatching of the first wild chick in generations, just one year after the choughs were reintroduced to the area.

While the chick faced a challenge in early July, disappearing amidst strong winds shortly after successfully fledging, its birth marks a triumphant milestone in the re-establishment of this species in Kent. Conservationists remain optimistic, viewing this as a promising sign of what's to come.

This success story is the result of decades of dedicated conservation work and a strong partnership among leading organisations, including the Kent Wildlife Trust, National Trust, Kent Downs National Landscape, and the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership.

Introducing the Shorne Pony

Discover the Shorne Pony, the newest addition to Shorne Woods Country Park! This striking sculpture, crafted from artefacts unearthed from local quarries, marks the start of a sculpture trail. It symbolises the hard work that has shaped the Kent Downs over centuries. As the pony hauls a log from coppiced woodland across quarried stone, it invites us to reflect on the past and consider how we’ll shape this landscape in the future. Visit Shorne Woods and see the Shorne Pony for yourself!

The sculpture was funded by the Kent Downs National Landscape through Defra's Farming in Protected Landscapes programme.

Work with us!
Discover our current opportunities and join us in the rewarding journey of safeguarding the Kent Downs and ensuring a future for generations to come.

Joint Advisory Committee Chair

This high profile role will work closely with the Joint Advisory Committee, Director and Team to contribute an important role in the advocacy, influence, support and strategic direction for the Kent Downs National Landscape internationally, nationally, and regionally.

Closing date: 30th September 2024

French-English Volunteer Interpreter

The Cross-Channel Geopark is seeking bilingual individuals, who have a passion for geology or nature, to use their language skills to translate at events and guided tours both in Kent and France. This is a flexible role, with no minimum time commitment and all travel expenses covered.

Closing date: 6th September 2024

Kent Downs National Landscape is committed to building a workforce which reflects the diversity of Kent’s working residents, encouraging applications from people of all ages, abilities, genders, sexual orientations, ethnic backgrounds, faiths and those with caring responsibilities, and aspires to create an inclusive workplace where everyone can be themselves at work.  People of colour and disabled people are currently underrepresented across our service. If you identify as a person of colour and/or are disabled, we are particularly interested in receiving your application.

Celebrating 75 Years of the North Downs Way National Trail!

This year, the North Downs Way is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, which created our National Trails.

We’re marking the event by sharing 75 stories from across the trail, and we’d love you to take part.

We’d love to know more about your connection with the North Downs Way – your favourite memories, people you’ve met along the way, experiences and encounters you have had along the trail. It can be a few sentences or a longer entry. Any photos or videos you have to go along with this would be brilliant too!

Making Space for Nature

Making Space for Nature in Kent and Medway is working to establish shared priorities for the delivery of nature recovery to create a network of wildlife-rich places across the county. This local nature recovery strategy will be one of 48 – together these will cover the whole of England, with no gaps or overlaps, to deliver the government’s commitment to ending the decline of nature and supporting its recovery.

Join a Mapping Workshop with Making Space for Nature and help shape the future of our natural landscapes! These hands-on sessions are your chance to have a direct impact on where nature recovery action should be focused. Whether you're passionate about protecting wildlife, restoring habitats, or simply love the outdoors, your input is invaluable.
