Durham Book Festival open for booking
From
10-13 October, a starry literary line-up will descend on Durham. This year’s 35+ events include authors
Helen Fielding, Rebecca F
Kuang, Terry Deary, Pat Barker, Jackie Kay, Andrew McMillan, Lucy Foley,
and many more. Taking place both
in-person and live-streamed, at
Gala Durham, Clayport Library and Collected Books.

Creative Writing for Teachers
Teachers, develop your creative writing practice and
gain the confidence to bring creative skills into the classroom on our Creative Writing for Teachers programme.
For £150, take part in monthly Zoom workshops, get feedback on your creative work, receive curriculum linked
resources, and more.

evening with Louise Doughty and Charlotte Vassell
Lovers of crime, thrillers and psychological fiction, join Louise

Four
Seasons in One Poem: Climate poetry event
Come to a climate-themed poetry night in
Newcastle on 19 September
to hear about how we can creatively reclaim narratives and explore shared histories through
poetry and storytelling. We’ll be joined by British poet Linda France, alongside First Nations Australia writers Graham Akhurst and Yvette
Henry Holt as part of their visiting scholarship with
Northumbria University.

Try your hand at writing
children's stories through workshops at Shiremoor
Library led by Karon Alderman, or learn how to write for the screen
at Tyneside Cinema with Chess Tomlinson. These six-week
courses begin in September, and are perfect for new writers or those
looking to try out a new genre or form.

Kick off the new academic year with a flexible online
writing course that fits around your busy life. Deep dive into Young Adult fiction and
build momentum on your novel,
or learn the essentials of how to go from
random scribbler to serious writer on our brand-new Fiction

As the new term draws
closer, it’s a
great time to think about
joining a Young Writers’ Group.
Taking place across the North East on Saturday mornings, our groups are for anyone aged 11-19 to

Support
our research into working-class readers
A Writing Chance Research and Story Associate Dr
Angharad Hampshire is conducting research into the reading habits of
working-class people as part of the AHRC-funded StoryArcs programme. This
research aims to shed light on the importance of
working-class representation in literature.
Please help us by completing a short survey, open to anyone aged 18+ and living in the UK who is from a
working-class background and likes to read.

Kitty Fitzgerald’s 1993 play Grandma
and Mrs Chatterjee is back from the archive
and available to listen to for a limited time on BBC
Sounds. This entertaining and thought-provoking
drama from the author of Pigtopia follows Breda's gran
Kathleen and her friend Mira as they battle to bring back Goddess Culture
via radio sets.
Newcastle writer Marek Bidwell’s first book, Skye
Line: Backpacking the original Skye trail, was published earlier
this month. Discover Skye as you've never seen it before as the author
traverses the island on foot, experiencing a wild landscape of remote
lochs and mountains where few people tread.

The new Strachey
Trust Grants from The Society of Authors
offer up to £500 to enable authors to access literary manuscripts.
Available to authors wishing to travel to a UK archive or collection to
research manuscript material, for a specific full-length literary
project.
The Poetry
Translation Centre is looking for young poets aged 18-26
with an interest in multilingual creativity to join the UNDERTOW artist development scheme. Participants will
receive one-to-one mentoring from poet Kit Fan and take part in online
workshops and seminars to build up their creative practice. Deadline 8 September.
Darlington-based writing group Stop Write Hear’s
new Write on Track competition is part of the bicentenary celebrations for the Stockton &
Darlington Railway. Anyone who lives along the historic railway is invited to submit
poetry, short stories and memoir pieces related to trains and railways.
Deadline 15 December.

Writing Month. Across four weeks of accessible digital workshops,

Explore writing, food, memory and taste at Write
and Shine’s Summer
Festival.
These online sessions, running until the end of August, embrace flavours
and friendship, cooking and the creative process, with two guest
speakers—photographer Sophie Davidson and poet Romalyn Ante.
The Manchester-based Coffee
and Poems Club
is hosting a fundraiser
event for Manchester Central Foodbank on Sunday
8 September, 5pm at Haunt MCR. Hear
from guest writers, get poetry writing tips, write a collaborative poem, and take part in a raffle with coffee and
poetry themed prizes.

The annual Inpress Writing Conference returns
to The National Centre for the Written Word in South Shields on Sunday
15 September. Three talks throughout the day will focus on writing a first draft, finding an agent, and routes into
publishing, with keynote
speakers published by Penguin, HarperCollins, DK, Verve, and more.

Publishing Uncovered is Bookouture’s new online event on for writers of colour
to find out more about the world of digital publishing and writing
commercial fiction, taking place on Friday

The annual Brontë
Festival of Women’s Writing returns to Haworth from 20-22
September. This year’s theme is Webs of Childhood, with a
focus on literature for children and young adults. Featuring a host of
fantastic speakers and workshop leaders, including headline speaker Dame Jacqueline Wilson, alongside free
events for families.
Some
Dappled Park is a unique poetry writing workshop from
the Philip Larkin
Society, on Saturday
21 September at Artlink Centre, Hull. Beginning with a walk around The Avenues
and Pearson Park, you will explore
the world of Philip Larkin and let
his work inspire you to craft
your own poems.
The very first Withington
Book Festival will take place from 2-5 October in South
Manchester. Featuring a spoken word event, book quiz, launch party, talks
from authors, panel discussions, and creative workshops. The events are
free for the public to attend.
