Greetings, writers:
Ever wonder why we can't get enough of the bad guys? What
makes villains so compelling? And why do we need them, anyway? Dive
into The 13
Best Villains in Cinematic History and discover why
they're not just evil—they're essential!
Plus, experience the thrill of redemption with our
must-watch Bad
Guys Turned Good flicks.

The thing about heroes is that they often need a villain
for the story to work. With a boring villain, a hero may not even be
able to rise to the occasion — so we want our “bad guys” really bad.
Whether they’re demons, Nazis, or horrifying superfans who kidnap their
favorite authors, you want certain stories to have someone to root
against. In the stories you’ll see below, we’ve picked the worst of the
worst: terrifying and iconic, the ones who stick with you even after
you’ve turned off the telly. You know which ones we mean.
|
|
|
The theme of Bad Guy Turned Good is enormously important
in the world of cinematic storytelling. It shows that even the most
apparently irredeemable characters can redeem themselves.
It is a theme that exists throughout all of cinema. The
six scripts in this collection all demonstrate that one of the most
satisfying cinematic/screen-storytelling journeys of them all is the
transformation from the negative to the positive.

Hello, writers,
This week, we're taking a look behind prison films and
discovering what makes these survival and personal redemption stories
so compelling.
Then, get a little more sense of justice with these 10 movies
about sticking it to the man.
Read on!

What is it about prisoners that makes them ideal for
storytelling? Maybe it’s the way they long for freedom, how they are
placed in situations where they’re constantly in survivor mode, or it’s
building humanity in a place that’s designed to take it away.
Regardless, the prison movie genre has been an artistic
study in film and television for decades. They’ve won Academy
Awards and have become fan favorites.
These screenplays are must-reads for those looking to
write prison movies or want to see how professional screenwriters
created an ensemble piece with a group of unique and exciting
characters.

Stories of the rich and powerful getting their comeuppance
never truly get old, especially when those delivering the just desserts
rise from the ranks of the powerless. We all want to feel
liberated from authority or “The Man.” We daydream about heedlessly
telling the Big Kahunas in our lives where to stick their rules.
But even if we never get the chance to actually tell our
bosses where to shove it, we can know what that feels like vicariously
through these films.

Wassup, writers!
Yes, we're going back to early 2000s TV - revisiting The Sopranos, Mad Men, and The Wire. Now that
this era is cool again (at least according to wide-leg pants being back
in fashion), let’s take a look at what stood the ultimate test - time -
and what made these series memorable, impactful, and ultimately,
universal.
Keep on reading, peeps.

If late 20th-century/early 21st-century television is
following 70s cinema as another lost golden age of screen storytelling,
then its totemic works – its equivalent of The Godfather and Chinatown as
the greatest works of a great era – are surely The Sopranos, The Wire, and Mad Men.
These three series combine the singular vision of their
creators with what might be called a structuralist approach to
storytelling. But how else do these works overlap? How do they
differ?
|
|
|
The most successful films offer a cathartic experience for
the audience. And that cathartic experience is usually the result of
the screenwriters and filmmakers presenting a story
with universal themes that everyone can relate to in their
lives.
The actual story may have little or nothing to do with you
personally, but the movie was so well written and produced that you
somehow felt placed within the shoes of the protagonist and felt their
own catharsis by the end of the film. That’s the magic of an amazing
screenplay and movie, leaving the reader or the audience truly touched,
affected, and sometimes changed.
