Still from A Different Man
|
|
The countdown to the
38th Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF) officially begins
on 14 September with the launch of a brand-new preview event, the
LIFF First Look Day.
This special preview
day offers Leeds audiences the chance to be among the first in
the UK to watch some of the most highly anticipated films of the
year. The day will feature four special preview
screenings at Vue in the Light, each offering a glimpse into
the diverse and compelling storytelling behind the LIFF 2024
programme.
Each film will be
introduced by the LIFF team, who will also share new updates
about what’s in store for the 2024 festival. LIFF 2024 will take
place 1 - 17 November across various iconic venues in Leeds,
including Everyman Leeds, Vue Leeds in the Light, Hyde Park
Picture House, and Howard Assembly Room. The full festival
program will be revealed in October, with tickets and passes
going on sale at that time.

Ambitious 16-year-old Mira is the first ever
female prefect at a strict boarding school in the
Himalayas who must navigate her own rebellious sexual
awakening around her school duties and her protective
mother. Winner of two awards at the 2024 Sundance
Film Festival, Girls Will Be Girls is the debut film by
Indian writer-director Shuchi Talati. The screening will
be followed by a live Q&A with lead actor Preeti
Panigrahi.

14 September / 3pm
In this darkly comic thriller,
writer-director Aaron Schimberg delves into how
self-identity is shaped by others. Aspiring actor Edward
undergoes an experimental procedure to change his face,
only to find it’s not the fix he expected. Featuring an
outstanding cast including Sebastian Stan, Adam Pearson,
and Renate Reinsve, A Different Man is a twisted satire
on societal beauty standards and our obsession with
self-image.

14 September / 6pm
Desperate to stay relevant, Hollywood
actress-turned-TV fitness star Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi
Moore) undergoes a back-alley procedure in this garish
body horror from Coralie Fargeat. The treatment spawns
Sue (Margaret Qualley), a clone of Sparkle’s younger self
who only lasts a week before they must swap bodies. As
Sue defies the rules, Elisabeth sets out to reclaim her
ageing body. A camp, grotesque satire on Hollywood’s
patriarchal beauty standards.

spine-tingling film that builds dread with every frame.
