Come and soak up local History the right way, delivered to you by
a passionate expert. It’s getting slightly saucy in Red Brick
Theatre this Thursday, as ‘The
Formidable Lizzie Boone’ bares all in this one
woman show that explores the trials and tribulations of modern
womanhood, with a nipple tassel or two… iconic right?
Of course! Friday Night Live
will be going off as usual in Copper Auditorium again this week.
If you enjoy Pop-Punk, raw energy and stunning acoustic playing

The most wholesome family day
out is waiting for you this Sunday with the winner of ‘Best Show
for Families’ at Buxton Fringe for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,
‘Wind in
The Willows’. This show is an artisanal,
handcrafted approach to theatre with a style unlike any other.

The
Earliest images of Halifax
A
kaleidoscope of grand old prints depicting our “good
old town” long ago. Beginning with 17th Century
images of the Gibbet, David will move on to a Halifax
panorama engraved before the Piece Hall was built,
and show images of The Piece Hall. Rare and unusual
images are included, and he will draw on artistic
work by J Horner, J Rideal Smith, and H R Oddy.
Finally, a series of early photos of the town.

Formidable Lizzie Boone

quirky, likeable trip through the inner life of an
urban young woman”
What
do you get when you combine a wedding ring, burlesque
and Pacman? Well, if you’re Lizzie Boone, you might
get therapy…
From
the multi-award-winning Selina Helliwell, ‘The Formidable
Lizzie Boone’ will pull you into
Lizzie’s world for a night of drama, healing and dark
humour. Centred around a therapists office, this
one-woman show explores the intricacies of humanity
through a woman who loves vodka with lemonade and a
cat called Lionel.
Lizzie
catapults us through her life; from the torment of
school bullies to darker experiences and chaotic
spirals; the pieces of her life that jammed together,
eventually pushing her over the edge and into her
recent breakdown. With lively voice-overs bringing to
life an array of characters from soothing therapist
Marie to wild child Debz, amongst others, this play
is bursting with soul and humanity.
A
burlesque dance scene also features, showing off the
sensual and theatrical side of burlesque and
highlighting ‘the art of tease’ to be a way of
finding your own spark and celebrating your
womanhood.

Alex Cairns – is a percussive fingerstyle guitarist who
enchants and captivates his audiences with his expressive playing
on the acoustic guitar. With over 19 years of playing experience,
Alex has intricately crafted his technique and composing skills
to create spellbinding music that takes you on the journey of
their experiences through hopes & dreams, fears & woes
and love & loss.
Georgia Farrar – is a singer/songwriter from Yorkshire who is
passionate about paying and creating music. She writes and
performs her own original songs and is extremely passionate about
music and song writing in particular. For her “music is a way to
say the words I usually can’t.”
Northbound &
Down – A Pop-Punk band that
blends an old-school nostalgic sound with a modern edge to create
an energetic rock show full of catchy choruses, bouncy riffs and
a breakdown thrown in here and there.

to the fearful frights and wicked weasels of the Wild
Wood, join Mole and Ratty on their marvellous
adventures, along with gruff old Badger and

theatre company Box Tale Soup, Wind in the Willows

Gasper
Nali Friday

Gasper Nali is a
roots one-man-band from the small town of Nkhata Bay
on the shores of Lake Malawi. He plays a one-string
home-made 3-metre long Babatoni bass guitar with a
stick and an empty beer bottle, and together with a
cow skin kick drum and catchy melodies, he creates
the most amazing and danceable original Afro Beats
possible!
Gasper’s
unique style of Kwela music has received an
extraordinary amount of online attention after a
video of him playing by the lake shore went viral
with over 20 million views. He has been featured by
CNN and in the documentary ‘Deep Roots Malawi’,
jammed with Joss Stone, appeared on Wired for Sound –
Malawi, remixed by Aroop Roy for Sol Power Sounds and
been played by Iggy Pop on BBC 6!His debut album,
Abale Ndikuwuzeni, roughly translates to ‘People, I
want to tell you’. It is a fitting title as Gasper’s
songs, all sung in the Malawi national language of
Chichewa, talk about life and strife in the country,
often including social issues such as the rich and
the poor, child marriages etc.
After
the successful Euro/UK tours in 2018 and 2019 Gasper
has been biding his time in Malawi, writing new music
and playing locally around Nkhata Bay the way he
always has – but now he is very ready to re-conquer
the world in 2023!

Kempner and Ania Magliano: Edinburgh Previews Saturday 15th July
Ania
Magliano
Ania’s
sharp, wry writing combined with her affable
performance style make her a ‘glittering new talent’
(The I Paper) of the UK comedy scene. Her debut hour
of comedy, Ania Magliano: Absolutely No Worries if
Not, won Best New Show at Leicester Comedy Festival
2022, and went on to sell out its entire runs at the
Edinburgh Fringe and Soho Theatre.
The
Times described it as ‘the sort of elegantly amusing,
surprising and inspiring debut hour that you come to
the Fringe to see’, whilst the Guardian listed it as
one of 10 Fringe Shows Not To Miss, saying it ‘will
have you crying with laughter’. Ania also writes with
comedian, journalist and viral sensation Amelia
Dimoldenberg on Chicken Shop Date and Amelia’s
Cooking Show, featuring guests such as Ed Sheeran, Charli
XCX and Louis Theroux.
Ania
has already appeared on ITV2’s The Stand Up Sketch
Show and Dave’s The Comedy Guide to Life. She will be
supporting Ed Gamble on his tour Electric across the
country this autumn. She has written for The Emily
Atack Show (ITV2), Frankie Boyle’s New World Order
(BBC2), Newsjack (BBC R4) and The Now Show (BBC R4).
Ania has a growing social media following, including
25k followers on Twitter, and over 1 million views on
Youtube with over 20k subscribers. She’s recently branched
out into TikTok, amassing over 1.5 million likes.

Kempner
Luke Kempner has
quickly established himself as the UK’s hottest new
impressionist for the millennial comedy generation
with his contemporary take on pop culture mimicry,
amassing over 3 million views online, through his
viral sketch videos ‘Alternative Love Island’ and
‘Alternative Game of Thrones.’ Luke is part of the
new Spitting Image cast, which can be seen on
BritBox.
2021
has already seen Luke make appearances on The Last
Leg (Channel4) and ITV2’s Stand-Up Sketch Show and
Love Island Aftersun. This follows a busy 2020 for
Luke, where he appeared on It Takes Two (BBC2),
Celebrity Karaoke Club (ITV2), and became a regular
contributor/presenter on Steph’s Packed Lunch
(Channel4)
Combining
razor sharp stand-up with incisively accurate
imitations of international hit box-set binge
characters, TV celebrities, social media superstars,
fellow comedians, notorious politicians and famous
sports names, Luke is also familiar to television
audiences with his regular appearances in the BAFTA

Carpet: the forgotten story of astronomers Edward
Crossley and Joseph Gledhill – Presented by Martin

The
first instalment of this celestial series!
The
West Yorkshire town of Halifax was dominated by
textile mills in the 19th century. Crossley Carpets
made carpets which were exported around the world.
What is less well known is that Edward Crossley and
his employed assistant astronomer Joseph Gledhill had
an observatory with the largest reflecting telescope
in England. The two astronomers made massive
contributions to the study of astronomy and after
their deaths, Crossley’s two big telescopes, the 36
inch Common reflector and the 9.3 inch Cooke
refractor, continued to be used in astronomical
research around the world.
Martin
Lunn – From 1989 until 2011 Martin was Curator of
Astronomy at the Yorkshire Museum in York, and in
1998 he was presented with an MBE for services to
astronomy and education. He is a Fellow of the Royal
Astronomical Society and has served a term on their
council.

Dire
Streets Saturday 22nd July
For over a
decade, Dire Streets have performed Dire Straits’
incredible back catalogue to thousands of
theatre-goers across the UK.
Dire
Streets bring to life the classic songs of one of the
world’s greatest guitar bands with a level of
musicianship and attention to detail that makes them
the stand out Dire Straits tribute in the UK.
The
two-hour theatre show includes faithful renditions of
classic studio tracks along with extended live
versions from some of the legendary Dire Straits
concerts.
No
other Dire Straits tribute act comes as close to
reproducing Mark Knopfler’s distinctive guitar and
vocal tones – making Dire Streets as near to the
original band as you can see live.
The
six-piece band is made up of some of the country’s
top tribute musicians and delivers a stunning show
that fulfils their mission of doing justice to one of
the most original and talented bands the UK has ever produced.

Ramble through the Solar System Wednesday 26th July
A Ramble through
the Solar System – Presented by Martin Lunn
Let’s
take a journey to explore our local star, the Sun,
together with the eight planets of the solar system;
some known to astronomers living thousands of years
ago and others discovered more recently. We will
learn about their moons together with the smaller
bodies; the dwarf planets, asteroids, comets and
meteors that complete our fascinating solar system.
Martin
