Huddersfield Literature Festival FREE International Women's Day online event tonight, 6pm

FREE event for International Women's Day:

MACFEST presents an exciting online event for International Women’s Day with Professor Siobhan Lambert-Hurley, who will talk about her new book: Three Centuries of Travel Writing by Muslim Women.

This illustrated online talk will look at the fascinating first-hand accounts of travel by Muslim women dating from the 17th to the mid-20th century. Challenging preconceived notions, it will offer an insight into how these daring and diverse women – queens, captives, pilgrims, provocateurs – explored the world. What unites these adventurers is a concern for the other women they encounter, their willingness to record their experiences and the constant thoughts they cast homewards.

Professor Siobhan Lambert-Hurley has co-edited Three Centuries of Travel Writing by Muslim Women with Daniel Majchrowicz and Sunil Sharma.

The event will be presented by Siobhan Lambert-Hurley, Professor of Global History at the University of Sheffield.

In partnership with MACFEST a ground-breaking and award-winning international Muslim Arts and Culture Festival that brings Muslim and non-Muslim communities together to promote social inclusion.

A Big Thank you on IWD2023

For #internationalwomensday2023 we wanted to celebrate the work of our brilliant Steering Committee - a female/non-binary led committee of local experts and industry leaders.

We’re grateful to have Dr Jodie Matthews, who helps advise on and manage our close relationship with the University of Huddersfield; Kirstie Wilson, who keeps our finger on the pulse of the library networks and maintains our relationship with Kirklees Council; and valued experts like Amanda Huxtable, Mandeep Samra, and Salma Zaman - leaders in theatre, culture, and the arts, who bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to advise and guide us in a wide range of areas.

Then there are the committee members who work in active HLF staff roles, turning the cogs of the festival wheel and ensuring we deliver an outstanding programme of events each year. Michelle Hodgson recently celebrated 10 years as Festival Director, and has grown the reputation and audience loyalty over that time; Michelle Brown, our Digital Manager, ensures that all our online and hybrid events run smoothly as part of our commitment to #keepfestivalshybrid; Cat Lumb does a superlative job working on issues such as evaluation, risk assessments and keeping our policies up to date; and Julia Lilof, our longstanding and brilliant Festival Manager and Volunteer Co-ordinator, supports with the logistics of managing the festival and guides the volunteer team and training.

We also have two new appointees - Charlotte Furness, Director of Leviart Marketing who joined us in 2023 as our Marketing Manager. And Zee Younus, a performance poet who has worked with many grassroots organisations, advising on LGBTQ+ issues and minoritised communities.

A final honourable mention must go to Jo Green, who joined the HLF staff team in 2021 to look after our admin and customer service, and is the person you’re most likely to speak to if you call the festival; and to Louise Grassby, our new Schools Co-ordinator, who is drawing on her wealth of experience as an educator to develop our Schools Programme.

A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to bring you Hudd Lit Fest each year, and so we wanted to take the opportunity on this day to celebrate the women and non-binary members of our team - to say a huge thank you for all the work they put in to make our Festival a success.
