Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 20 February at Cleckheaton Library with Alice, Dali, Gemma, Karen and Michelle in attendance, Barbara, Cassie and Kathy having given their apologies.

The minutes from the previous meeting were passed and Karen gave an update on Barbara's health. CWG members hope Barbara gets well soon.

WIP updates:  Karen wrote a new scene for her Romano sequel STO of 528 words, received a rejection from Bookouture for BFY on 13 February, took part in an online author event to promote her novel Christmas Evie on FB via CBG, and pitched in #PitchtoDA, #EWPP and #PBPith Twitter events. Gemma has been editing. Alice has written 7/8k words and undertaken research. Dali has got an idea for something. Michelle has written today, the start of something, and a haiku.

Feedback sessions: Michelle shared her story which was well received. Little touches like 'Welly bobs' and the feel of Dickens was noted and that it was a great idea for a short story. Alice informed Michelle that grammar school education started in 1957 and it was suggested that maybe setting it in a secondary modern in the 1970's, like Kes, may work just as well. It was also recommended to choose the perspective, perhaps close third, and to write more on the character's family life so that the reader knows to expect the next day at school is not going to go well even though the character does not. Dali shared a poem she wrote whilst the meeting was taking place about a bad experience she had at the FREE Friday Art Classes.

Michelle's story led to a discussion on the Youtube video That'll Teach 'Em about 1950's grammar school education, then a discussion on rhyming words, Scrivener and The Most Dangerous Writing App that deletes words if you do not write fast enough.

Writing plans: Gemma will be editing. Alice will finish her 10k word goal. Dali plans to write something at her grandads. Michelle will carry on working on her WIP. Karen will be editing.

Writing challenge – St. Davids (Welsh), Hares/Tangents March theme

The next meeting will take place on Monday 6 March at 5.30pm at Cleckheaton Library.
