World Music @ Seven


Coming up on Saturday 11th March 7pm, a real treat from Chechelele and Paula Ryan. This Acapella World Music Choir performs traditional African rhythms in addition to songs from round the world. Singer, songwriter & Gaelic “Funkstress", Paula Ryan, born and bred in Tipperary, Ireland, presents powerful, insightful songs inspired by the lyricism and musical passion of her Irish roots. A Pay What You Feel event.

Before that, tomorrow, Wednesday 8th March, 7.30pm, award-winning show Discount Comedy Checkout. This Leeds based original improvisation comedy group takes audience suggestions to create fast, funny and outrageous scenes before your eyes! Strap in for a fun ride as no show is the same! £10.

Later this week on Sunday 12th March 7pm, The Sunday Quiz. With special guest presenter, Chris Scarlott, test your knowledge in a relaxed atmosphere – a great way to end the weekend with friends. £5 per team entry. Seven Bar. With prizes.

Looking forwards, on Wednesday 15th March, 6-7.15pm Rush Hour Jazz – Ed Kainiek.  Ed is an alumnus of the Leeds Jazz Rock Orchestra and now a local legend on both Leeds and Manchester jazz scenes. Old school jazz - come over and enjoy yourself have a drink and listen to the music. Accompanied by the Jazz Leeds trio. Pay What You Feel Seven Bar.

Also on Wednesday 15th March, 8pm, Cafe Scientifique - Does Colour Exist?  Prof Stephen Westland (University of Leeds) talks on the topic of What is colour? How does it relate to our perception? He will discuss what colour really is, and why we perceive it as we do. Hat donations.

JazzLeeds returns on Thursday 16th March, 7pm, with the Elmo Hope Celebration Quintet. The quintet brings together musicians from the UK and Europe to play the compositions and arrangements of Elmo Hope who would have celebrated his 100th birthday in March 2023. £16/ £14.

On Friday 17th March 7.30pm, another outing for Barber B – A Play of Sorts. Join Barber B as he recounts tales of how he began his journey into barbering. Set against the cultural backdrop of ’80s and ’90s Chapeltown, Leeds, Barber B moves through the characters, opportunities and obstacles which defined his career. £10. Doors 7pm.

Rounding off the week on Saturday 18th March 7pm, For Colored Girls, a life changing collection of vivid prose and free verse narratives about and performed by Black women. Capturing the brutal, tender and dramatic lives of contemporary Black women, the show offers a transformative, riveting evening of provocative drama, dance, music and poetry. £15 / £12 conc.

Domino bartender JJ spent the week visiting producers in Cognac and Armagnac, everything from one-man operations in the middle of nowhere to the biggest producer of them all in the centre of Cognac itself, and loads more in between.

Darroze 1976 - 47 Year Old


Our bartender JJ spent last week in France visiting Cognac & Armagnac producers, and fetched back this rare gem from 
his traavels. Distilled from grapes harvested in late 1976 by Domaine De La Poste in the rarely seen Ténarèze region, this liquid has spent the last 47 years slowly ageing before being bottled in January of this year. This noble spirit is packed with coffee and toast aromas, with candied fruit and bags of complexity.

And now we’re really excited to open our second new venue, Slung Low at Temple. It’s an outdoor stage so always come prepared for the weather, of course it’s Pay What You Decide and April will see us host our first show on it: Wrongsemble's 'The Not So Grimm Twins'.

In May we’re back over at The Warehouse in Holbeck and we are beyond excited to welcome "avant-garde mess" and one of the most inventive theatre companies Ridiculusmus with 'So'. 

Then in June we’re visited by our brilliant old pals Middle Child with their punk-spirited show 'Modest', celebrating the baddest babe of art.

Kicking off the week we’re buzzing to welcome one of Britain’s finest traditional singers according to Folk Radio UK, as Jack Rutter will make your heart sing with exciting new music. It's a big cheers to the girlies and women everywhere for this weeks Friday Night Live with an International Women’s Day Special that brings together and celebrates women in music!

Halifax Symphony Orchestra are BACK with a musical love letter to British Composers. Behind the curtain theatre this week is a one man’s take on grief and is described by Harrogate Theatres as a “surprisingly hilarious top night out.”

Like a warm hug, film is here to embrace you and whisk you away to another reality for an hour or two. This years BAFTA slayer, ‘All Quiet on The Western Front’ screens this week along with other nominees along with some other 2022 favourites that we’ve decided to bring back in case you missed them first time round!

It's here! We are so excited to be back!

York Literature Festival starts today.


There are still tickets available for our very special opening event this evening, 7pm, with novelist Julia Armfield who will be in conversation about her work and her new novel, Our Wives Under the Sea. Join us at Creative Centre, York St John University, for this chance to listen and engage with one of the most acclaimed contemporary writers in the UK! Tickets are available on the door. 

 
  

Also today, we have an event called Open Mind, Open Mic, which sees poets Leo Boix, Shash Trevett, Janine Bradbury and Oz Hardwick read from their work before a pre-selected cast of poets take to the stage too! All this poetry for only £7. Come to The Basement, City Screen at 3pm and tickets are available on the door. 

  

Tickets are still on sale for our events next Saturday, 18th March. In the afternoon we celebrate women in music and music writing with two fantastic events. Firstly, soul legend P.P. Arnold will be in conversation with music journalist Lucy O'Brien about her career and biography Soul Survivor. This will be followed by an event with Lucy herself, who will be discussing her new biography of Karen Carpenter, Lead Sister. You can buy tickets for these events separately or as a combo offer

   

This is followed by the launch of Hannah Davies' new poetry collection, Dolls, with support from Say Owt. All three of these events are happening at The Crescent Community Venue. 

 

  If history is your thing, St Peter's School will be hosting Tessa Dunlop on the evening of Saturday 18th March to discuss her intimate new royal biography Elizabeth and Philip. 


Next week also sees events with crime novelist Saima Mir, the wonderful author Juno Dawson discussing Her Majesty's Royal Coven, Peter Frankopan on his new book The Earth Transformed and Steve Richards providing political commentary about UK Prime Ministers.

Northern Light Dance Academy is a local dance school from Wakefield ran by Dee West and Kirstie Devlin. Over 50 lessons per week are taught to over 150 students, offering lessons in ballet, tap, modern, cheer, street, musical theatre, contemporary, disco, physical theatre, jazz and performance.

The programme for Edinburgh Science Festival 2023 has been announced. From Sat 1–Sun 16 Apr, join us as we host two weeks of science-fuelled exploration at the National Museum of Scotland, from free interactive exhibits to family workshops and adult talks and events.

While the Scottish Storytelling Centre will be home to some of the funniest and creative improvisers as the Edinburgh International Improv Festival returns with a packed programme.

Take a peep behind the scenes on a Museum Collections Centre Tour and discover a treasure trove of objects, or join The Real Mary King’s Close for A Herstory Tour and explore the lives of some of Edinburgh’s most influential women.
