Arts Society, Halifax presents – Carol Wilhide Justin
– A History of Japanese Woodcuts
Ukiyo-e
or ‘Pictures of the floating World’ executed in
woodcut, was dominant and popular in Japan between
the 17C and 19C. Introduced into Japan in 770 we
explore the cultural and political background; key
artists, imagery, innovations leading to the ukiyo-e
period and the cultural and creative
cross-fertilisation which the prints inspired on
their sensational arrival in the West in the 1880’s.
Ukiyo-e influence is visible in the Impressionist
period and Crown Point Press.

Stellar
Anderson – Is
a Scottish singer/songwriter and
multi-instrumentalist. She released her first solo EP
The Book of Stellar Vol. 1 in 2021 on piano. The
songs all took on a life of their own and grew into a
10-track album “BREATHE” which was released in 2022.
The album features a collective of amazingly talented
musicians as The Stellar Anderson Project. Stellar
writes and performs all her own songs on piano and
guitar.

Hamster Society – Original music Alternative \Punk
\Hard Rock band The “Dead Hamster Society” (Formerly

Anarchy) and “Mr Sticks” on Drums (Reject Renegades)
and Your favourite Guitarist “Moshua” (from Temporal
Storm) – Based in Bradford they recently released
their first EP “Arnt you Dead Yet ” which is out n

and most streaming platforms. Gathering momentum The

Bootleg
Blondie are the world’s NUMBER 1 tribute to Debbie
Harry and Blondie, established in 2001.
This
band are the only tribute to have performed with two
original founder members of Blondie, legendary
drummer Clem Burke and singer, songwriter, bass player
and author Gary Valentine. BB had the honour of being
thanked on Blondie’s 11th album ‘Pollinator’ and have
performed at the infamous CBGB club in New York city,
appearing regularly at many top festivals and venues
in The UK and Europe. Lead singer Debbie Harris (as
seen on BBC 1) says her pride and joy is her guitar
that she plays during her shows, signed by all the
Blondie members.
To
celebrate 45 years since the release of Blondie’s
iconic 1978 album ‘Parallel Lines’ Clem Burke joined
BB on drums for not one but two UK tours in 2019
covering nearly 5000 miles and playing to over 7000
people

Youth Jazz Orchestra: Dizzy Gillespie Sextet Saturday 1st July
Join NYJO’s
Artistic Director Mark Armstrong as he leads a NYJO
sextet playing the music of Dizzy Gillespie!
John
Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie is a jazz icon. An epochal
trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator &
singer, his combination of musicianship, showmanship,
and wit defined the new sound of 1940s bebop.
Together
with Charlie Parker, this unique approach brought
harmonic and rhythmic complexity previously unheard
in jazz. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, scat
singing, bent horn, pouched cheeks, and light-hearted
personality provide one of bebop’s most enduring
symbols. A major figure in the development of modern
jazz, he taught and influenced many other musicians,
including trumpeters Miles Davis, Jon Faddis, Fats
Navarro, Clifford Brown, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Morgan,
Chuck Mangione, & balladeer Johnny Hartman.

really exciting to explore and perform this music
with NYJO’s musicians. Bebop is the musical
foundation for what we consider to be modern jazz. It
remains radical and challenging, asking questions
about the place of jazz in the continuum between art

Jubb’s comedy
club was created in loving memory of our bar
manager’s cat who sadly passed away recently.
To
cheer her up we decided to bring the hottest comedy
talent on the scene today to Square Chapel, including
some well-known faces as well as stars of the future!
Each
show will host a range of comedy styles from
professional comics regularly playing clubs across
the UK, some of whom are familiar faces on TV.

Aaron
is a highly energetic MC a crowd favourite on the
circuit. He’s been featured on Darren Harriot’s Red
Label on BBC Radio 4 and is also a trained circus
performer.

Brush
A
highly distinctive performer and deft writer of
finely crafted jokes. A former BBC New Comedy Award
finalist, Peter performs at clubs all over the UK and
abroad. He has written for BBC Radio 4’s The News
Quiz, The Show What You Wrote and Newsjack and was
the support act for Alexei Sayle’s 020 show. Peter
has also been Tour Support for Jonathan Pie, Jason
Manford, Fern Brady, Arthur Smith and Paul Sinha.

An afternoon of
puzzling out the toxic clues used by the Queen of
Crime, Dame Agatha Christie, in her bestselling
detective stories.
It
will be an exploration of poisonous plots and deadly
detective work. How do you spot strychnine in the
soup or cyanide in the champagne? We will look at the
how dunnit but whodunnit is for you to find out.
Dr
Kathryn Harkup is a former chemist turned author. She
writes and gives regular public talks on the
disgusting and dangerous side of science. Her first
book was the international best-seller A is for
Arsenic: The Poisons of Agatha Christie, which was
shortlisted for a Mystery Readers International
Macavity Award and a BMA Book Award.
Harkup
has also written Making the Monster: The Science of
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Death by Shakespeare:
Snakebites, Stabbings and Broken Hearts, Vampirology:
The Science of Horror’s Most Famous Fiend and The
Secret Lives of the Elements. Her most recent book is
Superspy Science: Science, Death and Tech in the
World of James Bond.

Rachel
Newton Thursday 6th July
Singer, harpist
and composer Rachel Newton draws on poems and ballads
that are hundreds of years old, working them into her
contemporary style to create a rich sound that is
ambitious, original and unique.
Previously
awarded Musician of the Year at both the BBC Radio 2
Folk Award and the Scots Trad Music Award, Rachel has
had two of her solo albums shortlisted in the
Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award. She also has
a Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland for Best Use
of Music and Sound.
A
skilled collaborator, Rachel is a member of The
Furrow Collective, The Lost Words: Spell Songs and
more recently a duo project Heal & Harrow with
fiddler Lauren MacColl. She has worked across various
platforms including theatre and storytelling.
To
The Awe, Rachel’s latest album, places women at the
centre of the narrative, at various stages of life
and often marking a coming of age and an acquisition
of power. The record is a tribute to the women who
have inspired Rachel and is influenced by her recent
work around the representation of women in the music
industry.

Square Chapel Oversight Board Recruitment
We are looking to appoint a
new Oversight Board for Square Chapel that will help us achieve
our ambitious goals for Halifax and West Yorkshire and deliver on
Arts Council England’s “Let’s Create” strategy.
In Autumn 2022 Square Chapel
successfully secured funding from Arts Council England’s 2023-26
Investment Round, and will be joining the National Portfolio of
Organisations from April 2023.
Arts Council England’s
National Portfolio of Organisations [NPOs] includes hundreds of
creative and cultural organisations across the country. Each one
receives three years of investment to ensure that people and
communities everywhere can benefit from access to creativity and
culture in line with their 2020-30 strategy, “Let’s Create”.
Between 2023-2026 Square
Chapel will receive a total investment of £477,000 (£159,000 per
year) to continue collaborating with the community to deliver a
wide range of creative and cultural activities across Halifax and
Calderdale.
As part of the funding
requirements, a voluntary Oversight Board will work closely with
Square Chapel’s Senior Management Team. This Oversight Board will
play a key role in ensuring that Square Chapel is delivering on
its organisational goals and programme activity funded by Arts
Council England.
