Hooked On the Booker
The 2019 Booker International Prize shortlist has been
announced, with Polish author Olga Tokarczuk, who won the prize in
2018, popping up again on a shortlist boasting five women writers and six
women translators. Elsewhere in England, Hachette UK has set high goals, with
the publisher unveiling a new plan to distribute
half the books in Britain. Chicago's Curbside Splendor is having a
harder time this week, with the house headed out on
hiatus following author criticism.
Like pretty much everyone else who has abandoned the Trump administration ship, former United Nations ambassador (and governor of South Carolina) Nikki Haley has written a book, which St. Martin's Press will publish this fall. It's another big pickup for Macmillan in the suddenly-struggling political book category, following last year's Fire and Fury and A Higher Loyalty. Back in the U.K., book biz cassandra Margot Atwell has predicted the shape of publishing in 2025 for the Bookseller. And in Texas, author Rachel Cusk's archives have been snapped up by the Harry Ransom Center.
Curbside Splendor Under Fire by Authors, Goes On
Publishing Hiatus

Who's the Fastest Growing of Them All?
The U.S. is home to thousands of independent publishers, and
annually, we look at presses that have done well over the last three years.
The fastest-growing publisher on this year's
list had a 400% increase. The big news in Big Five publishing
today comes from Hachette Book Group, where Mary Ann Naples has been named head honcho at
the Hachette Books imprint. Meanwhile, in Illinois, the IBPA
conference wrapped up over the weekend, where attendees were treated to Dominique
Raccah's tips and tricks, and in Boston, Porter Square Books is opening a
second shop in a new literary center.
If you were wondering if President Trump was plotting his revenge against his critics in the form of a post-presidency memoir, wonder no more: he is, the Daily Beast reports. Audible, under fire from its own critics, is settling a class action suit by giving away 12 million audiobook credits. In the U.K., novelist Philip Pullman continues to help lead the charge against e-book piracy, calling on his government to take action. And the author of 12 avant-garde novels, creator of author-run publishing house the Fiction Collective, and father of film director Noah Baumbach, has died at age 85.

Where's the Big Book of 2019?
This year's big books are last year's big books, at least for
the first quarter, as 17 of the top 20 books through March were published
last year. Something new is coming to the market, however: the first print
book from the Medium platform, a novel by a former Google
executive. And up in Massachusetts, the NEIBA Spring Conference just wrapped.
Here's our
report.
A predatory science journal publisher has gotten its due, being fined $50 million for scamming scientists to pay to publish in its pages. In the tech world, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie have finalized their divorce details, the New York Times reports. Unsurprisingly, the agreement leaves Bezos with ownership over the majority of their Amazon stock (and all of the Washington Post). A couple in Canada had better luck this week, as they found a winning lotto ticket in the pages of a book they bought. (PSA: Buy books! It will pay off!) And the Guardian reports that Amazon shoppers are misled by "bundled" star ratings and reviews.
Last Year's Books Top This Year's First Quarter
Sales
Michelle's Obama's 'Becoming,' released in early November, was the biggest title, selling 629,000 copies through outlets that report to BookScan in the period ended March 30. Only three books released in 2019 made the top 20 list in the quarter. more »

A Good Day for Publishing
This past year was a good one for trade publishing, with digital
audio and backlist sales paying many of
the bills. Perhaps that's what inspired the U.K.'s Marcus Leaver
to rejoin the industry—or maybe it was just Mark Smith, with whom Leaver has launched a new
company that has already made its first acquisition. And back in
the U.S., IPG is
realigning and expanding, while two children's
books with bestselling
predecessors have been announced. (Stay tuned here for more news
on the kids' world this week from our team on the ground in Bologna.)
Today is the 90th birthday of Milan Kundera, who remains an enigma at 90. Anglophile scholars will find great joy in the discovery of a lost charter issued by England's King John. Publishers will find less joy in an op-ed in the Guardian panning them for keeping salaries low. Oh, and Jeff Bezos is shutting down Amazon.com for the greater good. Happy April!

In more B&N news, USD's bookstore is ending its 17-year relationship with the retailer, converting to an online platform instead. In Michigan, however, a new "prototype" B&N is opening its doors today. PRH Reports Growth; SCBWI Fights Back
Digital audio downloads and bestsellers boosted sales
and earnings at Penguin Random House last year, and CEO Markus
Dohle says the company is "already on a growth trajectory" this
year. The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) is
seeking to have the defamation
suit filed against them by Jay Asher thrown out. Overseas, the European
Parliament voted to approve a controversial copyright reform bill.
Also across the pond, booksellers employed at Waterstones are gaining the support of authors such as Val McDermid and Sally Rooney who have signed a petition urging the British retail chain to pay a living wage. Oprah Winfrey, whose most recent book club pick was PRH's Becoming by Michelle Obama, announced a "vibrant" and "stimulating" new book club as part of a partnership with Apple TV. Speaking of books and television, check out a list of eight shows that depict "bookish culture," according to Book Riot.
Sales, Earnings Rose at PRH in 2018
Revenue at Penguin Random House rose 1.9% in 2018 over 2017 and earnings increased 1.3%. PRH global CEO Markus Dohle said he expects to see more gains in 2019 due in part to more increases in digital audio sales and expanding global book markets. more »

Netflix Wants Trademark Suit Tossed; Melville House Plans
Mueller Report Paperback
Netflix filed
a response last week against charges made by indie publisher
Chooseco that Netflix’s interactive feature Black Mirror: Bandersnatch
violates its Choose Your Own Adventure trademark. With the Mueller Report now
in the hands of Attorney General William Barr, Melville House is the latest
publisher to develop plans
to publish the report as a book, provided that more of the report
than the four-page summary released by Barr on Sunday is made available. We
also take a look at Binc, which has
acted as a safety net for booksellers for more than 20 years.
The co-founder of Australia's Booktopia reported skyrocketing sales despite Amazon's arrival in the nation and as e-book sales continue to fall. Booksellers are also celebrating poet and co-founder of City Lights Booksellers Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who officially turned 100 years old over the weekend. And another independent bookseller, Mitchell Kaplan, is being credited with putting Miami on the literary map, according to the New York Times.

Another Big One for Awards
Yesterday, the Whiting Awards,
the Templeton
Prize, and the Carle Honors
were all announced, making it another big day in publishing awards season.
The Academy of American Poets launched a new
award series yesterday, too. It was also a big day for LifeWay
Christian Stores, but not in a good way: the retailer has announced it will close
shop.
Falling under the category of "Baffling Reboots," author Francis Spufford has written an unauthorized Narnia novel, which has already received backlash despite Spufford's best efforts, as a former "passionately Narnia-loving child," to stay true to the originals. Things are even weirder in Maryland, as Jezebel shows in a feature on "Noraville," the town that Nora Roberts rebuilt in her image. And another loss comes to the poetry world as Linda Gregg has died at 76.
LifeWay to Close All Stores
Acting president and CEO of LifeWay Christian Resources Brad Waggoner announced the “difficult” decision to close all 170 bricks-and-mortar stores this year, opting instead for a “greater focus on digital channels.” more »
