The Weekend Edition

Hi, Karen.

Printed books are a must-have for self-published authors. That statement isn’t exactly breaking news.

But millions of authors around the world found this next item much more newsworthy: A recent printing price increase message from our friends at IngramSpark.

IngramSpark sent out a service alert email to author and publishers stating, “Effective April 1, 2019, we will apply a 2% increase in print pricing for all trim sizes, print formats, color, paper, and binding types. This increase is the direct result of a significant increase in print and manufacturing costs within the print industry as a whole.”

IngramSpark’s decision isn’t surprising news for those of us in the self-publishing world. Prices for ink, binding supplies, shipping—and most especially paper—have been steadily going up over the last 12 months. Ingram is one of the largest book distributors in the world selling titles to retail for every publisher including BookBaby.

How does this affect BookBaby’s book print pricing? Zero. Zilch. Nada.

BookBaby has decided to hold the line on pricing—there will be no increases in the foreseeable future. We know independent authors’ budgets are always stretched thin. But you have something important to say, and we want to help you say it—and we don’t want price to be a barrier.

In fact, we’re working hard to make book printing even more affordable.

If you’re ready to publish a print book, use code coupon code EM100OFF to receive $100 off your next order of 100 or more copies. Not ready for 100 copies? You can get free shipping instead.

For all the talk about eBooks and audiobooks, the fact remains that the ink-on-paper product is the mainstay of the publishing market, and a printed book legitimizes an author like nothing else.

Let’s make some books, shall we?

All the best,

Steven Spatz

The Weekend Edition

Welcome to the weekend, Karen.

From business books to memoirs, cookbooks to romance novels, books of every genre roll off the presses in the BookBaby Print Shop. And I get a front-row seat to discover them all! My morning routine usually starts with a stroll through the digital presses and bindery equipment, getting a first glimpse at all the new titles being printed, bound, and shipped.

This week I noticed a lot of children’s books going through the plant. In fact, that’s happening a lot now. BookBaby creates high-quality, affordable printed books—both soft and hardcover—in all the most popular trim sizes for children’s books.

In fact, here’s a sampling of some children’s books featured in our own BookShop:

Janjay, by Liberian-American author Chantal Victoria, is the story of an 8-year old West African girl who gets distracted from her important chore of collecting clean water for her family. Through humor and the use of local language, this story brings to light the global issue of access to clean water and sanitation.

Rod Gottula’s book, Double! Not Half, is about a young Montana boy and his family’s move to Japan, and he faces the challenge of learning a new language and adapting to a new culture. By emphasizing the positive aspects of dual languages and cultures, Double! Not Half is a message of the benefits of inclusion and cultural diversity.

Mika and the Microscopy, by Rachel Tiersky, is a story about tearing down old stereotypes. When her brother gets a microscope for his birthday, he declares it off-limits to Mika, saying that science is, "Only for boys." Mika takes up the challenge to prove him wrong as she "journeys" through her backyard, collecting bugs and plants to prove that she is a scientist no matter what biases others may have.

Given all the interest in writing children’s books, I suggest you take another look at Michael Gallant’s popular post on the BookBaby blog, “Ten Tips For Creating Your First Children’s Book.” Creating a picture book sounds like a pretty simple job—but it’s not as easy as it seems!

As I’m still enjoying the afterglow of my long vacation, I’ll leave you with this list of 10 delightfully literary vacation spots, compiled by our friends at Bookish.

All the best,

Steven Spatz

5 Essential Self-Editing Tactics to Use Before You Publish with Steven Spatz and Chris Bank
Steven Spatz, President of BookBaby, will be interviewing Chris Banks, Founder of ProWritingAid, and sharing the most important copyediting techniques that make the biggest differences to your book. Plus, add your own questions during a live Q&A.

What we’ll cover:
  • Why you, the writer, MUST thoroughly copyedit your manuscript yourself before you send it to anyone else. Many writers believe that someone else—an editor, a copyeditor, or a beta reader—should do the hard editing work. But that’s wrong. You are the best person to copyedit your work, and you must take the time to polish your manuscript before you send it off. We’ll show you some simple techniques to make it shine.

  • Why simplifying your writing is essential. Too much writing gets bogged down with over-complicated sentence structures and phrasing. Learn why this is dangerous and can stop your readers from understanding your ideas.

  • How word choice can completely change how your reader experiences your book. Steven and Chris will show you how word choice is essential when it comes to helping your reader not only to understand your writing, but to experience it for themselves.
Don’t miss your chance to learn five of the most important self-editing techniques from two of the most experienced pros out there. Reserve your spot today.

The Weekend Edition

Karen, I’m keeping my promise.

I vowed these Weekender emails wouldn’t be “salesy,” and I really love sharing useful and amusing publishing tidbits for your Saturday enjoyment. These notes have sparked delightful conversations with authors around the globe.

But this morning, I want to share something special. I’m not selling anything, I’m giving something—and it’s proven to be very valuable.

Here’s the backstory: Two years ago, I wrote a guide about self-publishing. Why? There’s way too much indie publishing information on the internet—much of it wrong and confusing—that discourages would-be authors.

My free guide, 5 Steps To Self-Publishing, cut through the crap. It provided the essential information that writers need to know and understand to become self-published authors—nothing more, nothing less. I launched it upon the world in 2017 with fingers crossed.

And it worked. It’s been a smash hit, with over 250K downloads and print versions read. I’m gratified that thousands of authors have been inspired to publish their books thanks to this guide.

But that was then. The publishing industry is constantly changing, and my guide needed a refresh. So here’s your exclusive Weekender offer:

The 2nd Edition of the 5 Steps Guide To Self-Publishing has just been released. I’ve updated it with the latest information on best practices for smart and profitable self-publishing, including new book marketing techniques. There’s also inspiring content about how Amanda Hocking and E. L. James achieved self-publishing fame and fortune.

I know it sounds salesy, but this really is a new-and-improved guide, and it’s available as a free download as an exclusive offer to my Weekender audience.

My original motivation for writing the guide remains: I believe this guide is essential to your self-publishing success.

All the best,

Steven Spatz

The Weekend Edition

London calling!

This weekend, I’m getting set up for the annual London Book Fair. It’s one of the biggest—and I think best—book shows in the world. I’m looking forward to seeing authors, publishers, agents, editors, publicists, and many other movers and shakers in the publishing industry. If you’re in the neighbourhood, please come see me on March 12-14 at the BookBaby stand (1F56) in the historic Olympia Exhibition Center.

My time on the road these past couple of weeks makes me thankful for the invention of eBooks. I know that digital books are not everyone’s cup of tea. Like many of you, I love the tactile feel of quality binding and ink on crisp paper. But at the moment, I can’t imagine lugging all my heavy books around the globe. I just checked: I have over 250 books stored on my iPhone and iPad. The convenience and portability of eBooks just can’t be beaten for globetrotting readers.

A lot of authors still have questions about how to create eBooks, so today, I thought I’d reintroduce you to some of our best BookBaby Blog posts on the subject:

But let’s not forget our dear friend, the printed book. The New York Times provides another armchair tour of great bookstores—this time, around the USA. Our guide is Ann Patchett, international best-selling author and co-owner of Parnassus Books of Nashville, TN.

Cheerio!

The Weekend Edition

Good morning,

As you’re reading this, I’m winging my way across the Atlantic for some travel and adventure with my kids. Later in the month, I’ll be back to work, exhibiting at the London Book Fair on March 12-14. If you’re in the UK, this really is a must-attend book gathering and I hope to see you there.

Since I’m in a global state of mind this weekend, let’s talk about the huge opportunity that exists in international sales. And, no, you don’t need to spend a ton of money on foreign language translation to cash in. Even if your book is written in English, you can find plenty of readers overseas. How many? Here’s just a sampling of English-reading audiences around the world:

India – 125,000,000
Pakistan – 94,000,000
Germany – 46,000,000
France – 23,000,000
Australia – 18,000,000
China – 15,000,000, with another 250,000,000 learning English in state schools.

One of my most popular blog posts, “The #1 Mistake Of Self-Published Authors For Worldwide Book Sales,” urges authors to be open to ALL online retail options for worldwide book sales. Hint: it means offering your book in more stores than just Amazon.

As I travel abroad, I expect my next few messages will have an international flavor, so I’ll leave you today with Culture Trip’s list of the 13 most beautiful bookstores from around the world. I’ll be checking out Scarthin Books and Hatchard’s when I’m in London in a few weeks.

Cheerio!
