I have mixed messages for you this morning, Karen.

I’ll start with some not-so-good news: It’s been a tough few years for religious bookstore chains. LifeWay Christian Resources, the largest Christian retail chain in America, announced late last month that it plans to close all 170 stores this year. LifeWay’s closures come two years after its biggest competitor, Family Christian Resources, shut down all 240 of its locations.

But this news contrasts with another tremendous development: The number of indie bookstore locations has grown by almost 50% in the last ten years! In 2018, there were 1,835 independent book-selling companies running 2,470 stores. That’s an increase of 819 new locations since 2009. During a recent survey in the United States, 20 percent of respondents stated that they still purchase most of their print books in a store. In 2018, bookstore sales in the United States amounted to over $12.5 billion.

It can be a challenge for self-published authors to get their books into brick and mortar stores. Here are a few things to consider:

Authors need to decide whether it’s worth the time and effort to pursue bookstore sales. Most authors make more money from eBooks and Print On Demand (POD).
Bookstores generally won’t buy books if they can’t be returned. You’ll need to make sure your printer or self-publishing service accepts the inevitable book returns from retailers. (Note: BookBaby’s POD distribution program DOES allow returns!)
You’re more likely to get into bookstores if you develop a relationship with your local retailer and organize events with them. Being a customer of the bookstore will help!

When you’re able to secure shelf space in your local bookstore, Dana Kaye’s post from the BookBaby blog, “Do Bookstore Events Matter?” provides excellent advice for making the most of bookstore events.

Speaking of bookstores: Strand Bookstore, the iconic bookseller located in New York City, is fighting for survival. But the threat isn’t from online competition or soaring Manhattan real estate rates—it’s from the fallout of being declared a City Landmark!
