Your Daily Conference Update
Today in news from book fairs near and far, we've got photos from
Bologna, a write-up of a Bologna panel on taking
African-American books to a global audience, a sum-up of
AWP's 2019 conference, and a call for
information for BookExpo listings. At bookstores, January was a
tough one, with a big decline in
sales in the month. And at Scribd, a new original
content program is emerging.
It's been a big, and hard, week for science fiction already, with the 2019 Hugo Award finalists announcement coming coupled with news of the death of feminist science fiction writer Vonda N. McIntyre. Police have determined that a pellet-gun attack on a North Carolina bookstore carried out by a teenager was planned, the Raleigh News and Observer reports. And in the e-book world, Microsoft has closed its e-bookstore—which means that everything you purchased will vanish in July.

Bookstore and Sales Rep of the Year Named; Thomson-Shore's Fall
This year's PW Bookstore of
the Year goes to Literati in Ann Arbor, Mich., while the PW
Rep of the Year is Cindy Heidemann, a PGW and Two Rivers rep in the
Northwest. On a less celebratory note, book manufacturer Thomson-Shore has

is likely.
The American Booksellers for Free Expression is defending Amazon's right to sell all legally published content related to children's vaccinations after Congressman Adam Schiff challenged the online retail giant for offering "medically and scientifically inaccurate information." The owner of Booktenders Secret Garden in Doylestown, Pa. is now selling more than just books: Ellen Mager is auctioning off the walls of the children's bookstore store that have been signed by famous authors such as J. K. Rowling in order to offset debt and stay open.
Literati Named 2019 PW Bookstore of the Year;
Heidemann Rep
The six-year-old Ann Arbor bookstore has grown from 2,600 sq. ft. and seven employees when it opened to nearly 4,000 sq. ft. and 27 employees today. Long-time PGW Northwest sales rep Cindy Heidemann is known as "a master at helping buyers focus on what is important for their stores." more »

AWP Off to Positive Start; Coker on Ways to keep Books Valuable
The AWP began is 2019 conference on a positive
note following an often tumultuous 2018. Most authors don’t make
much money and Smashwords founder Mark Coker
offers advice on how writers can prevent the commoditization of
their intellectual property. Leading indie publisher Sourcebooks
had a good 2018 with sales up 17%.
In its first big announcement since pulling out of Long Island City, Amazon is expanding its presence in Austin, Tex. with a move that will create 800 new tech-focused jobs. Author Rachel Kushner describes the inspiration behind her latest novel about life in a women's prison, The Mars Room, telling the Sydney Morning Herald: "As a Californian, I think the invisibility of the person serving a life sentence in prison is somehow a real component of Californian life." Electric Literature offers another perspective of women's lives, as covered in the media, and an editor says that the book industry isn't dead, saying so is just a way to keep salaries low.

Trade Keeps Scholastic Kicking in Q3
Scholastic was hit by a number of high costs in the third
quarter of fiscal year 2019, but revenue still
rose by 4% thanks to a strong showing from its trade group.
Librarians, meanwhile, are proving they're almost as good at social media as
they are at, well, everything else, with promotional
"Library-stagrams" popping up across the country. And in
last week's Soapbox column, two independent publicists had some advice for
authors on what to expect
from their services.
Following the mass shooting in Christchurch last week, a New Zealand bookstore has pulled Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life from its shelves. The move comes a month after Peterson, while touring the country, posed for a picture with a fan wearing a shirt emblazoned with the words "I'm a proud Islamophobe." Back in the U.S., André Aciman has announced Find Me, a sequel to Call Me By Your Name, which will be published by FSG this October, while actor Lupita Nyong'o has said fans can look forward to a film adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel Americanah.

Beginnings and Endings
"Life is made up of meetings and partings," Kermit the
Frog, as Bob Cratchit, says in the Dickensian adaptation A Muppet
Christmas Carol, and so it is with publishing news today. This year's
London Book Fair has ended, and with it, our team on the ground wraps up
their coverage with some analysis

has teamed up with
Arcadia Publishing, Viz Media has launched an
original manga-inspired graphic novels imprint, and Random House
Children's Books has announced a forthcoming
line of Spanish-language editions of Dr. Seuss books. And W.S.
Merwin, the beloved former U.S. poet laureate and environmental advocate who
wrote most often of absence and remembrance, died last
Friday at 91.
Al Silverman, the magazine editor and publishing executive who co-wrote Gale Sayers's book I Am Third, which was adapted into the film Brian’s Song, has also died, at 92. In Harper's, Christian Lorentzen laments the death of the book review in the age of the algorithm, while in the New Yorker, Leo Robson dreams of the literary canon that might have been.

Quarto's 2018, LBF's Jumpstart, and Celebrating Lawrence
Ferlinghetti
First reports are in from the London Book Fair, where Faber's
CEO Stephen Page discussed new tools to
drive the future of publishing. Speaking of the future, Quarto has
improved its bottomline and is working on "returning
to full health." In more good news, Lawrence Ferlinghetti,
the Beat poet and painter whose 100th birthday is later this month, is being
celebrated as a champion of the First Amendment in our op-ed
this week.
Additional celebrations of Ferlinghetti are in the works at City Lights, the famed San Francisco bookstore he co-founded, and at locations across the city, according to the New York Times. As parties get underway for Ferlinghetti, new light is being shed on John Williams and his "perfect novel," and the author of 'The Marshall Plan' has won the American History Prize. And finally, LitHub is looking at how creativity became a capitalist buzzword.

F+W Bankrupt. Bookstore Sales End 2018 Up.
F+W Media, once considered a new model for print publishers with
its move into e-commerce and the creation of subject “communities,” has filed for
Chapter 11. The revival of print continued in 2018 as bookstore
sales rose 1.7%. And HarperCollins continued to expand its global
reach with the launch of
HarperVia.
Elsewhere around the web, drawings by singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell are being published in a book coming this fall, while the drawings of Harper Lee are being sold at auction. Also, the student who wrote for BuzzFeed landed a book deal, and questions are being raised about whether or not the mere discussion of books makes us more cosmopolitan.

PW talks with Brown about his timely work of graphic nonfiction, a sweeping look at the long history of marijuana; its importation into the U.S. in the 19th Century by Mexican immigrants; and the legacy of racist and false claims attaching the drug to sexual violence and psychosis to justify legal restrictions and misguided public policy. McQuiston talks about her new novel Red, White, and Royal Blue, a witty queer rom-com that puts the biracial son of the first female U.S. president and the prince and young heir to British throne, in a scandalous (and funny) bromance, as we watch the two progress from enemies through gay panic to secret sex and the inevitable media exposé. more

Acclaimed superhero writer Brian Michael Bendis takes over the
writing of Superman in Action Comics Vol. 1: Invisible Mafia (with
artists Ryan Sook, Patrick Gleason and Yanick Paquette), a lively new
adventure by the Man of Steel. In this nine-page excerpt, Superman has been
falsely accused of a series of devastating fires and forced to clear his
name; Lois Lane, his wife and star Daily Planet reporter, has
disappeared; and the Daily Planet is losing readers and Perry White is
driving his reporters (Clark, of course, as well as Robinson Goode, a new
black female reporter with an air of menace) for evermore scoops. If all of
this weren’t enough, there’s a new and powerful super villain in Metropolis
who may be behind a growing and well organized criminal empire. Click the
