APRIL NEWS FROM SLUNG LOW

Hello friends,
It seems like only yesterday that we were telling you of upcoming things in March and now we are already in April! Another month bursting with events, workshops and opportunities is here and we can't wait to share them with you!

HOW TO ... ADVENTURE!

We’re delighted to announce that our 10th How To… festival will take place at The Holbeck on Sunday 12th May and it's all about Adventure. There’ll be various adventurous events for all the family to enjoy over the course of the day and something for all ages.

The performances will be Little Soldier’s Journey To The Impossible at 4pm, an 80s sci-fi adventure for children as young as 7 and as old as time, and Can You See Into A Black Hole? (7+) at 7pm, a one-man show about space-travel and understanding epilepsy by Doncaster-born theatre maker Tom Ryalls.

Earlier in the day, we have a range of exciting participatory activities. South Indian vegetarian cooking with Manjit’s Kitchen (16+), a drop-in session of Den Building from re-usable materials for all the family on Holbeck Moor, and also on the moor we have an afternoon Skate Session for all skaters, rollerbladers, BMXers and scooterers (12+). There’ll also be a storytelling workshop based comic book structure called The Superhero Challenge (12+) by Tom Ryalls, and at 6pm Manjit and her team will serve a delicious dinner of South Indian street food. All are welcome, and as always at Slung Low, you pay what you decide after taking part. You can book your place for any of the events listed above by visiting here.

SHOWS
t'Other, by Beggars Belief Collective will be in The Holbeck on Sunday 28th April. In a town like ours but not quite now, and slightly off centre from here, Cass & Hillary go about their daily business until their lives are disturbed by the arrival of a curious, enigmatic & annoying stranger. A story of mistrust, intolerance, unexpected friendship, and ultimately, love, t’Other is chaotic in its form, warm in its heart and joyfully jaggedy in its anarchic style of storytelling. A fable  for our time. Tickets are still available, pick them up here

We are thrilled to welcome Bezna Theatre and their show Illegalised, performing on Sunday 5th May. Inspired and informed by interviews with migrants, refugees and those seeking asylum, British-Romanian political theatre collective BÉZNĂ Theatre’s ILLEGALISED is protest-theatre that exposes the profit made from the illegalisation of human beings. For more information and for tickets pop over to the show page here.

Catch some of the most exciting stars of the UK's poetry and spoken word scene on the 25th and 26th April when Wordlife hold a a two-night spoken word event. After the success of the Northern Slamhouse last year, Words In The City have teamed up with Brave Words to bring you an even bigger standalone event. Watch eight poets slug it out for bragging rights to be named as the Words In The City Slam Champion. The Slam event will feature headline slots from Vanessa Kisuule & Gevi Carver and the Showcase will feature Henry Normal and Malika Booke. For details about the both the events pop over to our events page here.

Then we’ll start the clock and you’ll create a story based on a comic book structure. You can make these scenes by any means possible – drawing, taking photos, or even through Instagram posts – and at the end you’ll have the chance to unleash your stories on the world. ‘Smart, fast and very, very funny.’
Jules Verne meets The Goonies via Stranger Things – an 80s sci-fi adventure story for all the family. Did you ever own a Walkman or play Donkey Kong? We made this show for you. We made it for people, like you, who recognise the ‘Pshhhkkkkkkrrrrkakingkakingkakingtshchchchchchchchcch*ding*ding*ding’  sound of a modem, who were scared watching the Goonies and who, like us, couldn’t tell you the mobile numbers of their nearest and dearest but would still be able to call their best school-friend’s home number. Ah! And for your children, of course. Book tickets here
At 6pm – Dinner by Manjit's Kitchen
Enjoy a delicious, home-made, pay what you decide dinner of South Indian street food.

At 7pm Can You See Into A Black Hole by Tom Ryalls
12+
Tom once dreamed of being the first astronaut from Doncaster, he wanted it so much the thought of it burned like a hot star in his head. But, when he was 8 on a campsite near Scarborough that star went supernova and formed a black hole that the astronaut he dreamed of fell in to.

Tom doesn’t remember his epileptic seizures so now, over 15 years after his first one, he’s going to try and reconstruct the story of what happened. With the help of his parents he’s going to defy science, reach into a black hole and reclaims the aspirations his epilepsy took from him.
With a score created from documentary interviews, music and the only surviving film of one of his seizures, “Can You See into a Black Hole?” is a show about how to achieve the impossible. Book Tickets here

Come and join the adventure!
