The Zone of Interest at LIFF 2023 |  Extra screenings of Mutt & Hundreds of Beavers | Changes to Pictureville Screenings | How to Have Sex Q&A with Molly Manning Walker | Thrill Rides | Cinema Amour | Rear View | Artist for Women, Life, Freedom at Hepworth Wakefield

LIFF 2023 presents Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest

A woman dressed in 40s clothing holds a baby in a garden, as it grabs a nearby flower.

We are thrilled to announce the addition of The Zone of Interest to the LIFF 2023 programme, screening at 6pm on 18 November at Hyde Park Picture House. The new film from Jonathan Glazer, director of Sexy Beast and Under the Skin, The Zone of Interest won the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival where it was hailed as ‘a masterpiece’ (BBC) and ‘a landmark movie’ (The Times).

Based on the novel by Martin Amis, and starring Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller, The Zone of Interest is about the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, who strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp. Tickets are available from 7pm on 27 October. The Zone of Interest is an A24 film, co-produced by LIFF 2023 partner Film4.

Extra screenings of Mutt and Hundreds of Beavers

We have added extra screenings of two of the best-selling LIFF 2023 films. The accomplished feature debut by Vuk Lungulov-Klotz, Mutt is an intimate and honest exploration of post-transition life - a third screening is now scheduled at Everyman on 5 November. Mike Cheslik’s Hundreds of Beavers is a wonderfully absurd, epic slapstick comedy that pays homage to silent era cinema, Saturday morning cartoons and retro video games - a third screening is now scheduled at Vue on 18 November.

Changes to screenings at Pictureville Cinema

A stylish man in a suite holds a gun, ready to leap into action.

We were very sorry to hear about the temporary closure of Pictureville Cinema in Bradford due to the discovery of RAAC (Reinforced Aerated Autoclave Concrete). We were presenting four films at Pictureville as part of LIFF 2023 and we have made the following changes: screenings of Charlie Bubbles and Kuroneko are postponed until Pictureville reopens; and North by Northwest is now screening on 14 November and From Russia with Love on 18 November, both at Vue in The Light.

How to Have Sex + Q&A with Molly Manning Walker

A young woman in a bikini sits on a sun lounger as she blows up a yellow balloon.

One of the most talked about British debut features of 2023, How To Have Sex is a gritty, vital exploration of the nuances of consent and societal pressure. We are delighted to announce that the film’s writer and director Molly Manning Walker is attending the LIFF 2023 screening on 4 November at Hyde Park Picture House for a Q&A, joined by cast members Samuel Bottomley, Shaun Thomas and Laura Ambler. How to Have Sex is released in the UK by LIFF 2023 partner MUBI.

Thrill Rides at LIFF 2023

A man holds a gun through the open window of a train, pointed at another man.

Image from The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

Thrill Rides at LIFF 2023 is a selection of famous and not-so-famous thrillers set on trains and at stations, or featuring classic train sequences, or where a train is an ominous background presence. Films include three Hitchcock thrillers, Bond vs. Red Grant on the Orient Express in From Russia with Love, two gritty thrillers set on the New York Subway - The Taking of Pelham One Two Three and The Incident, and rarely screened classics The Train Robbers (restored in 4K) and Night Train.

Cinema Amour at LIFF 2023

In Cinema Amour we bring together a very special programme of new documentaries, archive films and talks exploring ‘cinephilia’, or the love for film and cinemas. Through Cinema Amour you can explore the lost cinemas of Recife in Brazil, a legendary New York Video Shop, a film club in Southwestern Nigeria, an underground film collection hidden in the basements of Tehran, a lovingly handcrafted cinema in a small Finnish village, and London’s most infamous repertory cinema.

Rear View at LIFF 2023

A man lies on his back, hands behind his head as another woman leans into him intimately, staring into his eyes.

Image from Bushman

In Rear View we present a big-screen collection of 4K restorations of rarely-screened archive films, classics from the Netherlands as part of Dutch Discoveries at LIFF 2023, and film favourites screening for free. This year’s restorations include Bushman (USA), The Dupes (Syria), and Nomad - Director’s Cut (Hong Kong), and the UK Premieres of the restored versions of two films made in 1966 by Japanese master stylist Yasuzo Masumura – The Spider Tattoo and The Red Angel. Our free breakfast screenings return to Hyde Park Picture House with Before Sunrise and Zazie dans le métro.

Artists for Women, Life, Freedom at The Hepworth Wakefield

A large group of children play in the leafless branches of a dead tree.

LIFF is supporting Artists for Women, Life, Freedom at The Hepworth Wakefield on 12 November. This free event features short films from Iranian women filmmakers and a panel discussion and Q&A about the urgent situation in Iran, Iranian women in film, and navigating the art world and film industry as a woman from the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa). The panel will include the filmmakers in conversation with academic, artist and curator Dr. Azadeh Fatehrad.

Stunning Seasonal Sunsets

You might be surprised to learn that the best time of year for incredible sunsets is actually during late autumn and winter.

As the seasons change and daylight hours shorten, the sunsets become more striking.

But why? Find out in our sunsets blog!

Mobile Milkshakes

Say hello to Kent's first ever mobile milk vending machine!

Launched in summer 2023, the vending machine from Nightingale Dairy is self-serve, offering fresh milk, milkshakes and frappes with lots of seasonal flavours!

The milk comes from the small family farm's herd of rare and native breed cattle in the Alkham Valley.

You can find the milk vending machine popping up at lots of local events and at Alkham Valley Village Hall every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 4pm.

This project is supported by the Kent Downs AONB through the DEFRA funded Farming in Protected Landscapes programme.

Award-winning country parks

Four country parks in the Kent Downs have seen success at this year’s South & South East in Bloom awards.
Brockhill, Lullingstone, Shorne Woods and Trosley Country Parks were all awarded gold, with Brockhill awarded the South & South East Country Park of the Year for the 6th Year in a row!

Digging in the Darent Valley

Our Darent Valley Landscape Partnership team have recently completed a very successful community archaeology dig, in partnership with the National Trust, at St John's Jerusalem in North Kent.

The property at Sutton-at-Hone is home to a rare surviving chapel, the only remaining structure of the Preceptory of the Knights Hospitallers of the Order of St John of Jerusalem formed in 1113. Having never been excavated before, the site has outstanding potential for archaeological remains.

The dig took place in the grounds of the site over three weeks in October. Despite the rain, the team successfully uncovered walls of earlier buildings surrounding the house. Between these and the former fishpond, filled in during the Victorian period, the team found lots of interesting artefacts spanning hundreds of years.

These include broken fragments of ceramics from Victorian rubbish dumping (including a ‘Frozen Charlotte’ doll), a piece of a pot lid from the Strand in London, a very fancy button, and medieval finds including pieces of decorated floor tile and a quarter-cut 13th century penny.

Places to visit in the Kent Downs

Looking for inspiration for your next adventure in the Downs? Look no further! Here's our top spot to visit this November...

Country Parks

There are many country parks to explore in the Downs, with outdoor activities, walking trails, visitor centres and plenty of open space to explore. Plus, there are loads of seasonal events coming up too! Here are some of our favourite country parks to choose from:

Brockhill’s lake, woods, meadows, picnic and play areas (along with the excellent vegetarian café!) make it a great spot for a family day out.

🔍 East Cliff and the Warren is a great site for rock pooling when the tide is out and is one of the best sites in southern England to go fossil hunting!

🌼 Lullingstone is internationally important for its collection of ancient trees, some of which are believed to be around 800 years old! The park also has spectacular displays of orchids and other wild flowers in spring and summer.

🌳 Shorne Woods has nearly 300 acres of woodland to explore and enjoy as well as an eco-friendly visitor centre, play area, garden and restaurant.

🌄 Trosley boasts spectacular views over the North Downs, a café that serves delicious homemade food, and a woodland play area for kids.

🦮 White Horse Wood offers beautiful countryside and breathtaking panoramic views, and is perfect for walking the dog.
