Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes, meeting Monday 18 September 2023

Cleckheaton Writes Group (CWG) met on Monday 18 September at Cleckheaton Library with Cassie, Gemma, Karen, Kathy, Reuben and new member Molly in attendance, Alice, Barbara and Michelle having passed on their apologies.

CWG members welcomed Molly and introduced themselves and their writing practice. Molly has written poetry and entered the East Street Arts competition with a biographical monologue. Good luck Molly.

The minutes of the last meeting were passed.

WIP updates: Karen has applied for a freelance editor position, sent thoughts on feedback to Sophie Hannah, sent another nudge email to my ‘editor’ following feedback from Sophie Hannah, New section for The Pallbearer 355 words, Stalker threat letter for The Pallbearer 123 words, got a reply from Cassiel, my ‘editor’ re: Christmas Evie and entered 5k of The Pallbearer into Mslexia Novel competition. Gemma has been conducting research and visited Blodsworth Hall, where they shut off bedrooms in 1910 due to letting the servants go, and the British Library where they have two thirds of all published books. She signed up for an account as she will get free journal articles (£12.50 a month to access from home) and books will be delivered to the reading room. 

CW comps/workshops/events:  Mslexia Novel deadline midnight tonight and Short Story and Flash competitions (deadline midnight 18 September), NWN Prototype Award opens 12/9 (deadline 23 Oct) and Hachette Children’s Award opens 26 October (deadline 8 Jan), BBC Writers Room pilot (deadline 26/9), CBC breakthrough scholarship TV screenwriters (deadline 1 Oct), CBC Gillian McAllister novel-writing (deadline 29 Oct) and CBC John Le Carre Scholarship (deadline 29 Oct), Case Closed crime competition (deadline 26/9), Birmingham Literature Festival(Karen has brochure) Prima magazine competition, 1k words

Writing plans: Karen will be editing and hoping to do some writing. Gemma conducting more research. Cassie will undertake her U3A writing assignment. Kathy and Molly hope to write a dribble or drabble. Reuben will tackle chapter three of his WIP.

Feedback sessions: Reuben shared that he came up with the solution to his problem with chapter three at a conference. Karen shared an excerpt from her crime novel The Pallbearer which was well received. Members especially liked the last line, felt it was very dark and wanted to hear more.

Writing challenge: Education theme for September

Next meeting: The next meeting will take place on Monday 2 October at 5.30pm at Cleckheaton Library.
