Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron is A new addition to LIFF 2023

We are delighted to announce the addition of The Boy and the Heron to LIFF 2023, a semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death and creation, in tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki. The Boy and the Heron will screen at 3pm at Hyde Park Picture House on 19 November, the closing day of LIFF 2023. Tickets are available from 7.30pm on 18 October.

There are 265 screenings and events to choose from at LIFF 2023 which is an extended edition from 3 to 19 November, taking place for the first time over three weekends. Passes are the best way to explore LIFF 2023, with a variety of different discounted options designed for every level of film fan. Plus, most of our passes can be shared with others as much as you like and with any combination of tickets. For 6 tickets, we have the LITE Pass and for ages 25 and under the BUZZ Pass. For 10 or 20 tickets, we have the EXPLORER Pass, and the EXPLORER GOLD Pass for unlimited tickets. Passholders also get exclusive discounts at a variety of venues in Leeds.

 

 

 

 

Access at LIFF 2023

We aim to make LIFF accessible for everyone and we have a dedicated page on leedsfilm.com with information about our venues, how to book including for companions and with a CEA card, how to request additional support and get in touch with any access enquiries, and our accessible screenings. We continue to increase the number of accessible screenings at LIFF and this year we have more screenings of films with descriptive subtitles and audio description, and relaxed screenings.

BFI NETWORK Industry Day at LIFF 2023

We are delighted to host a BFI NETWORK industry day with masterclasses, screenings and social activities for early career filmmakers, organised by Film Hub North as part of LIFF 2023. The industry day runs from 1pm to 7.30pm on 8 November at Hyde Park Picture House, including a screenwriting masterclass with the team behind Rye Lane and culminating with a showcase of some of the freshest shorts from Northern filmmaking talent. Tickets cost £5 and include entry to the entire industry day.

 

 

 

 

The Leeds Independent Film History blog series

Leeds has a fascinating history of independent film exhibition, dating back to the 1920s, and on leedsfilm.com you can read a blog series about the individuals and cinemas involved, written by researcher and film programmer Alice Miller. The latest blog in the series has just been published on leedsfilm.com and it tells the story of Leeds Film Society, a voluntary organisation that sustained artistic and cultural cinema in the city for over four decades.

Kicking off next week on Wednesday 25th October 7.30pm, Silky & Friends returns for its monthly outing with Rob Rouse headlining. Support from Molly McGuiness and Faizan Shah. And of course your perennial host, Silky. £12 /£10.

On Thursday 26th October, 7pm, JazzLeeds – Nigel Price Organ Trio. Nigel Price is one of the UK’s leading jazz guitarists, so it is with great pleasure that we welcome him back, leading his Organ Trio in an evening of tunes made famous by the legendary guitarist Wes Montgomery and Grant Green. Doors 7pm Music from 7.30pm. £18/16 conc (25s and under £9).

On Friday 27th and Saturday 28th October, 8pm, the gig we've all been waiting for : Caution Collective. Look forward to two nights of acoustic soul, R&B and pure roof-raising energy. With original material throughout, Caution Collective founder and key musician, Christella, presents a host of singer songwriters and outstanding vocal talents plus the unstoppable backing of the Caution Collective Band. £18.

The Christy Herron Trio is our Autumn Sessions offer on Saturday 28th October, 4-6pm, with this Leeds rock ‘n’ roll and blues trio unleashing their bluesy malfeasance. Electrifying vocals and guitar; and solid grooving rhythm section. Seven Bar. Pay What You feel.

And rounding off a stellar fortnight on Sunday 29th October, 1.30- 4pm, JazzLeeds – Dudley Nesbitt and Pan Jumby.  Dudley Nesbitt has won a well deserved Windrush award for his work in music and this special gig at Seven Arts features the steel pan-led jazz quintet Pan Jumby, led by Dudley playing contemporary Calypso and Caribbean Jazz. £12 /£10 under 16s free.

Fantasy: Realms of Imagination

For centuries readers have escaped their everyday lives and journeyed into new worlds filled with magic and adventure, incredible mythical creatures, and heroes and villains that speak to our greatest dreams and fears.  

Explore the origins of fantasy with Greek epics and Arthurian legends, through to the ethereal illustrations of Arthur Rackham and pop culture icon Xena: Warrior Princess. Fantasy, folklore and fan culture will meet in this magical new celebration of rare books, ancient artefacts, and memorabilia.

A free exhibition at Leeds Central Library: 10 November - 17 January 2024 which can be accessed during our opening hours. More information here

The exhibition will tour to a selection of libraries in Leeds in the new year.

Glimpse panel eventA Glimpse Into Other Worlds

Glimpse is the first speculative fiction anthology of Black British writers, with stories of Afrofuturism, magic realism, and transformation. 

Leone Ross, the editor of Glimpse, teases out from three writers: Akila Richards, Nii Parkes and Pete Kalu, their re-imaginings, other worlds and how they create the unexpected to make their readers pause.  Speculative fiction encourages writers to grow wings – there are no limits to what could be.

Joseph CoelhoJoseph Coelho: Fairytales Gone Bad

Joseph is the Waterstones Children’s Laureate 2022-2024, and an award-winning poet, playwright and writer.

Zombierella, the first in a series of spooky stories described by Joseph as “Fairy Tales Gone Bad” was published in 2020. Illustrated by Freya Hartas, these dark, twisted tales are inspired by traditional fairy tales, and are popular with our library customers aged 8 -12 years.

We have lots of fun activities and events during October half term to engage and entertain before winter arrives. 

The National Museum of Scotland is hosting a week of activities, from music to storytelling, as part of Cultural Connections. On Sat 21 Oct, there will be a Celebration Day in the Grand Gallery with local musicians, dancers and artists performing and celebrating connections to Africa and the Caribbean.

Taking a closer look at the wardrobe staple, there’s just a few weeks left to see the stunning Beyond the Little Black Dress at the National Museum of Scotland, while Monarchs of the Glen opens at Dovecot Studios and explores the international history of a Scottish icon.

The city’s incredible cocktail culture takes centre stage as Edinburgh Cocktail Week returns for ten days of cocktails, pop-ups, live music, street food and entertainment.
