Poor Things opens LIFF 2023 on 3 November

A woman with thick eyebrows and a frilly outfit, stares off intensely while a mustached man cuddles against her.

Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo in Poor Things

We are thrilled to open LIFF 2023 with Poor Things from Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, the winning film of the Venice Golden Lion and one of the year’s most anticipated films. Poor Things will screen at the beautifully restored Hyde Park Picture House and tickets will be available from 11 October when we launch the full LIFF 2023 programme (see more information in the next item).

Poor Things is an absurdist global odyssey celebrating female pleasure and liberation. Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) is a young woman who is brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist and embarks on a whirlwind adventure across the continents.

“Everything in it – every frame, every image, every joke, every performance – gets a gasp of excitement.” – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

The LIFF 2023 Opening Film is presented in partnership with Film4 Productions. Backed by Film4, Poor Things is released in the UK by Searchlight Pictures on 12 January 2024.

A group of people stand in front of a intense, large blue flame on a floor length black screen

LIFF Presents: Feminist Riposte

Smoke covers a group of people, many are wearing masks and have camera. The back of a protester can be seen in the foreground, waving a smoke device.

Wednesday 4 October / Vue Screen 11 / 7pm

Closing the current LIFF Presents season is an exclusive screening of Feminist Riposte which will screen at Vue Screen 11 on Wednesday 4 October at 7pm. By day they share stories and create posters. By night, they head to the streets, plastering the walls with slogans and reclaiming the cities as safe spaces for them to exist in. Marie Perennès and Simon Depardon's striking documentary follows women and people of marginalised genders across  France as they protest harassment, rape, femicide while challenging the authorities’ response to these issues. A rousing, intersectional documentary that highlights that not everyone's fight is the same, even if the end goal is shared.

An unmissable world premiere in Leeds...

Four Seasons of the Caribbean

Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is a well-known piece of classical music that musically characterises all four meteorological seasons of the year. Four Seasons of the Caribbean is a 21st-century response to this classical masterpiece that blends the sounds and feelings of the Caribbean population in Britain.

Composers Philip Herbert, Cassie Kinoshi, Renell Shaw, and Ayanna Witter-Johnson (pictured above in order) were each commissioned to write a ‘season’ to contribute to the growing catalogue of ‘four seasons’ pieces in the repertoire. The result is a unique blend of sounds, both traditional and modern, featuring a solo violinist, a steel-pan player, and the outstanding Manchester Camerata orchestra.

Join us for the world premiere to celebrate Black British composers’ legacy and descendants of the Windrush generation. Mesmerising beats await!

Last chance to see Beyond the Little Black Dress

There’s only three weeks left to see Beyond the Little Black Dress, at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh until Sun 29 Oct.

From design classics to cutting-edge catwalk creations, the exhibition deconstructs this iconic garment and examines the radical power of the colour black in fashion.

As a crown dependency, our little island has its very own laws... It was once, quite strangely, against the law for a farmer to knit during fishing season. And in that charming way we like to confuse and confound, Jersey also has it's very own language... Jèrriais! But even if you can't pronounce our place names, there'll always be a friendly local nearby who's happy to help.

Rectangle: Rounded Corners: Learn the local tongue

This September, we welcomed a host of authors to the island as part of the Jersey Festival of Words. This got us thinking about our favourite places to get stuck into a good book in Jersey. From beautiful bays, to isolated offshore reefs, cosy pubs with roaring fires to soaring clifftops overlooking the Atlantic coast - you'll be sure to find your perfect reading nook on our curiously Brit...(ish) island.
