All the latest information and updates about Cinema on the Square, our new open-air cinema day celebrating music, film and the joy of summer. Taking place this Sunday 30 July on Millennium Square.

DAFT PUNK's Sci-Fi MUSICAL Anime TO CLOSE Cinema on the SQuare

An anime style illustration of 4 futuristic band members with matching outfits.

8:45pm / 30 July / Millennium Square

Daft Punk's rarely screened animated musical fantasy film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem has been announced as the surprise closing film for Cinema on the Square.

Experience Daft Punk's music like never before with this unique dialogue-free visual spectacle, set to the music of the duo's second album, Discovery. Inspired by 70s anime like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, it tells the story of an alien rock band, kidnapped by an evil music mogul on Earth forcing their number one fan to fly across the cosmos to rescue them.

Don't miss this unique chance to see the film on the big screen, enhanced by Millennium Square's concert-grade sound system for the ultimate audio/visual experience.

CINEMA ON THE SQUARE: KEY INFORMATION

A crowd of people sit watching a big screen erected on a concert style stage, outdoors.

Food & Drink

A fully licensed bar selling alcohol and soft drinks will be available on-site for our guests during the film. Guests may bring in their own food & snacks but may not bring in their own alcohol. All soft drinks must have their seals intact.

Seating

Seating will be provided so there's no need to bring your own chairs. Specific seats will not be assigned so it will be first-come-first-serve but there will be plenty of room for all guests. Doors will open approximately 20 minutes before the film's start time.

Weather

Screenings will only be cancelled in the event of severe weather. Personal umbrellas are permitted to bring on site. According to current weather reports Sunday will be mostly cloudy and fairly warm but it's best to check the weather before your film and dress appropriately.

CINEMA ON THE SQUARE: What's ON

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical

Several schoolchildren dance and sing with red flags in front of their school.

Sunday 30 July / 1:00pm / Millennium Square

A dazzling new musical adaption of the nostalgic childhood tale. Matilda is a young girl gifted with a keen intellect and special powers that she must use to deal with her crude, distant family and help free her kind teacher from their sadistic, child-hating headmistress (played by an unrecognizable Emma Thompson).

Stand By Me

Four young boys stand in the woods, looking in the direction in which one of them is pointing.

Sunday 30 July / 3:45pm / Millennium Square

A landmark of 1980s cinema and the quintessential coming-of-age film, Stand By Me is an enduring look at friendship, mortality, and the adventures of youth. Set on a warm summer’s day in 1950s rural Oregon, four boys head out on a hike in search of the body of a local missing boy, determined to become town heroes.

Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)

A man plays keyboard at a concert, a sea of faces can be seen looking up to him.

Sunday 30 July / 6:00pm / Millennium Square

Over six Sundays during the summer of 1969 the Harlem Cultural Festival featured world famous musicians such as Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson, The Staples Singers, Nina Simone, BB King, Sly and the Family Stone. Incredibly, this footage was neglected for 50 years until it was recently restored and returned to audiences.

Daft Punk - Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem

A animated blue humanoid character plays a bright pink guitar in front of the numbers, 5555.

Sunday 30 July / 8:45pm / Millennium Square

Mixing science-fiction with the decadent world of show-business, Interstella 5555 tells the story of an alien rock band kidnapped by an evil music mogul and their number one fan who flies across the cosmos to rescue them. A unique anime musical fantasy film conceived by and featuring the music of Daft Punk.

What's on in August

Here's our latest updates and a glimpse of what's happening in the Kent Downs AONB over the next month.

This month, we're celebrating 55 years of the Kent Downs AONB and Cross-Channel Geopark, the return of red-billed choughs to the Kent countryside, and an award-winning event in our landscape. Plus, the arrival of summer means it's festival season!

Read on to discover new experiences, events and places to visit as you head #UpTheKentDowns!

55 Years of the Kent Downs AONB

Happy Birthday to us! The Kent Downs AONB has been captivating visitors and locals alike with its unparalleled beauty and abundant heritage since its establishment on 23rd July, 1968.

To celebrate the 55th anniversary of the designation of the AONB, we’ve curated a collection of our favourite 55 places to visit, our Top Downs! The list showcases the very best the region has to offer.

From charming villages steeped in history to panoramic viewpoints that will leave you in awe, we think there is something here for everyone to enjoy! So, grab your walking boots, pack your camera, and get ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure #UpTheKentDowns.

Wild choughs return to Kent

After a 200-year absence, red-billed choughs have been reintroduced in Kent, as part of a ground-breaking conservation project.

This week, the Kent Wildlife Trust and Wildwood Trust released 10 captive-bred choughs in to the wild at a secret location in the Kent Downs AONB near Dover. These iconic birds were driven to extinction in Kent through historical persecution and land-use change resulting in habitat loss.

The release has been made possible by years of work restoring the chalk grassland habitats where they feed.

The Reintroducing choughs to Kent project is supported by the Kent Downs AONB through the DEFRA-funded Farming in Protected Landscapes programme, which helps fund projects in the farmed landscape under the themes of climate, nature, people and place.

Places to visit in the Kent Downs

Looking for inspiration for your next adventure in the Downs? Look no further! Here's our top spot to visit this August...

St Margaret's Bay

St Margaret's Bay is a picturesque coastal village in the south east of the Kent Downs AONB, known for its stunning natural beauty and rich historical significance. Situated between the iconic white cliffs and the bustling port town of Dover, this charming bay boasts incredible views across the English Channel, making it a popular spot for scenic walks and relaxation.

One of its notable landmarks is the South Foreland Lighthouse, a historical beacon that has guided ships for over a century.  The bay offers various outdoor activities like hiking, birdwatching, and water sports, providing an excellent opportunity to connect with nature. With its warm and welcoming atmosphere, friendly locals, and quaint cafes and shops, St. Margaret's Bay offers a delightful experience for those seeking a blend of history and natural beauty along Kent's heritage coastline. Don't miss the whitewashed house at the end of the beach where Ian Fleming, writer of the James Bond novels, once lived and is said to have written ‘Moonraker’.  You’ll also find the Coastguard pub here, it is claimed to be the nearest pub to France!

Bees and Refugees

🗓️  Saturday 12 August, from 12 noon to 6pm
📍  Otford, TN14 5JS

🎟️  Tickets are free but limited (it's a small farm)

You're invited to the launch of Bees and Refugees' new community farm in Otford. It's a unique initiative that celebrates sustainability, community, and the power of bees!

So, get ready for a day filled with beekeeping workshops, candle making, seedling planting, farm decorating and face painting. Plus, there'll be music, and light food and drink!

This project is funded through DEFRA's Farming in Protected Landscapes programme (FiPL) and managed by the Kent Downs AONB. The fund helps farmers, land managers and others to deliver projects in the farmed landscape under the themes of climate, nature, people and place.

SALT + EARTH Festival returns

From Friday 8 to Sunday 10 September we'll be celebrating the seascape, landscape and geology of the Kent Downs and Cross-Channel Geopark.

Join artists, creatives, and scientists exploring everything from geography to geology, sounds to sculptures, food to Deep Time. There will be walks, talks, feasts, exhibitions, installations with something for everyone to enjoy.

'You can reach the World from Dover' Festival

We're proud to be supporting this brand new arts festival celebrating Dover’s contemporary life and rich history.

Curated by Dover Arts Development (DAD), the festival includes new artworks by internationally regarded, Dover-based artists together with a programme of exhibitions, workshops, talks, walks, performances and screenings all drawing on the vibrant artistic and creative activity of the town.

The events will take place across the town including the harbour, Dover Museum, the Market Square, the Citadel and Fort Burgoyne historic forts, the River Dour and the North Downs Way National Trail as well as parks, green spaces and wild places.

'You can reach the World from Dover' is funded by Arts Council England, Kent Downs AONB and the North Downs Way National Trail and is supported by Kent County Council, Dover District Council, Port of Dover and the Land Trust.

Award-winning Kent Downs

We're incredibly proud to have won the first ever Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Campaign award at the Travel Marketing Awards 2023 for our work with the Active Inclusion Network and our dedicated Muslim Hikers walk.

This prestigious travel industry award run by the CIM | The Chartered Institute of Marketing recognises the steps travel companies and organisations have taken to put diverse values at the heart of their campaigns to attract wider audiences.

Held in February 2023, the walk saw 150 Muslim hikers visit the Kent Downs AONB for their first ever coastal walk. The event was recognised at the prestigious award ceremony earlier this month for promoting inclusivity in the great outdoors.

Distillery Newsletter

Hi

We’re keeping it short and sweet this month as we’ll be emailing you on Tuesday with news of Filey Bay Yorkshire Day 2023. But there were a couple of things we couldn’t wait to tell you about! We’re nearly ready to welcome you back to the distillery after our July closure, Open Day is just around the corner, and we got a great surprise earlier in the week when we were named in a Top 10 list by Spirits Business.

So pour the last dram of Yorkshire Day 2022 (to make space on the shelf for next week), and settle down to scroll through this month’s newsletter.

In good spirit,

The Distillery Team

Distilling

Filey Bay Peated Finish Batch #3 &

Filey Bay Moscatel Finish Batch #4

Not one but two new Filey Bay Whiskies are now ready since our last newsletter.

Filey Bay Peated Finish Batch #3 continues the subtly smoky profile of the award-winning Batch #2, using ex-Peated casks from the west coast of Scotland to finish our light and fruity single malt.

Filey Bay Moscatel Finish Batch #4 is the next iteration of our sweet and fruity ex-Moscatel finished whisky. Our Sales Manager Morgan is already a huge fan, calling it his favourite Moscatel Finish so far… we think this calls for a blind tasting!
