Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes, Meeting 19 June 2023

With thanks to Gemma who took the minutes in my absence:

Present: Barbara, Kathy, Paul, Reuben, Gemma

Apologies: Karen, Cassie, Michelle, Alice

Introductions were made to Paul. He has written 3 non-fiction books, including one about Mary Bell, and is 40k into the first draft of a novel.

Since last meeting: Reuben has finished rewriting chapter 1 and started writing chapter 2. Barbara has made progress with her 4 part serial Valetta Finds Her Feet, which may become 5 or 6 parts. She's also written a drabble in a comedy sketch style. Kathy has fleshed out her accident scene.

Feedback: Barbara read her comedy drabble (ably assisted by Kathy), My Frog. It was about 2 frogs living in a fish tank, prompted by real life. It was like a Smith & Jones sketch and well received.

Reuben read chapter 1. There was great description and it was very creepy. Advice was given on overuse of "she" and removal of words like "thought". We were unsure when it was set, but Reuben has a plan to put that in.

Plans: Reuben will write chapter 2. Barbara will write part 2 of her serial. Kathy will work on Tobias and Gemma will continue editing.

The next CWG meeting will be tonight at 5.30pm at Cleckheaton Library
