There are around twenty species of plants used to make Sotol with Wheeleri being the most ubiquitous. Wheeleri is also the local varietal near to Gerardo Ruelas’ distillery near the town of Aldama and produces a spirit with an earthy, vegetal character but with a rounded sweetness on the palate.

Summer fun with Leeds Libraries...

Leeds International Concert Season logo

Hi,

There's over 30 free concerts to choose from as part of the Summer Bands in Leeds Parks series, so why not take your loved ones to discover music al fresco in a green space near you. Concerts take place every Sunday from 2.30pm, simply turn up and enjoy the music!

Manchester Collective have just announced their 2023/24 season and we're excited to welcome them back to the Howard Assembly Room this autumn and winter. They present two incredible programmes featuring sonic landscapes of really old and really new music. Read on to find out more.

See you at a concert soon,
Leeds International Concert Season

In Leeds' parks and green spaces

Manchester Collective: LAD

Ambient drone music meets baroque masterpiece…

Evoking the haze and heady atmosphere of underground clubs, violinist Rakhi Singh and guitarist Alan Keary (aka Shunya) come together to venture into unknown sound worlds. Expect a collision of genres in this eclectic set by JS Bach, Steve Reich, and Julia Wolfe, plus music by by Hildegard von Bingen, Rakhi Singh, and Alan Keary.

Thu 19 October, 7.45pm
Howard Assembly Room

Manchester Collective: The End of Time

This is chamber music at its most dramatic and unfiltered. Olivier Messiaen’s transcendental Quartet for the End of Time was written in 1941, while the composer was interned at a Nazi prisoner of war camp. It was premiered by fellow inmates to an audience of about 400 prisoners and guards, outside, in the rain.

If you’re familiar with this work, you know what all the fuss is about. If it’s your first time – you’ve got a hell of a ride ahead of you.

Wed 6 December, 7.45pm
Howard Assembly Room

Art Doctors

Art Doctors

For two weeks only the Art Doctors will be taking up residence in Leeds. They’ll be prescribing silly and fun things for you to do which will help you explore how to get started on something creative, overcome any fears, find inspiration in the everyday, and have bit of a giggle.

Come to Kirkgate Market anytime between 10am and 4pm from Wednesday 19th to Saturday 22nd, or Wednesday 26th to Sat 29th July, where you can meet the Art Doctors and try something a bit different.  And, just in case you were wondering, you really don’t need to be able to draw, paint, dance, write or play music… this is for everyone.

Through these events the Art Doctors are testing activities that will be available in local libraries across Leeds, Wakefield and Kirklees from September. These have been designed with librarians and will be available for you to pick up and have a go at, inspiring you to be more creatively confident and to build deeper connections with your local library and community.

The project is funded by Arts Council England and supported by Leeds, Wakefield and Kirklees Libraries, and Leeds Beckett University.

Summer Reading Challenge

Summer Reading Challenge

We're really looking forward to this year's Summer Reading Challenge, which begins on Saturday 8 July! The theme is "Ready, Set, Read!" aiming to keep children's minds and bodies active over the summer break.

Children can read anything they like – stories, poetry, fact books, graphic novels or listen to audiobooks – it’s up to them! Physical or digital books can be borrowed from the library. We recommend reading at least six books over the summer, and there's a reward for each one read. After reading their sixth book, the challenge is completed and children will be awarded a certificate and medal.

Book highlights for July...

The Stirrings

A beguiling mix of the personal and the political runs through this excellent memoir from writer and critic Catherine Taylor about growing up as a woman in Britain through the 70s and 80s. There are some great anecdotes in here and some brilliant social history too – it’s worth reading for the chapter on 1984 alone.

Sanderson's Isle

James Clarke is a writer who everyone should have on their radar following his Betty Trask Award-winning novel about the Miner’s Strike, The Litten Path, and his dazzling short stories set The Hollow In the Land. This is a novel set in the 60s about a disaffected man searching for his lost father who finds a lot more than he bargained for when he meets a famous TV personality, then things take a turn for the psychedelic……

Hermit

A stirring and evocative book about the human desire for solitude across the ages that effortlessly blends nature writing, history and memoir with a journalist's eye for detail and a poet’s clarity of vision.

It's July already! We hope you're all having lovely summers - even if the sun has temporarily disappeared (anyone else a little pleased we've had some rain for our garden veggies?). Whilst, we're still working behind the scenes planning and plotting for our next festival, some of our lovely authors have been hard at work finalising their next publications and we wanted to share the details with you so you can get your hands on a copy. There are also some exciting events coming up over the next few weeks that we think you'd like, so we hope you enjoy browsing through this little update from us :)

Paul Burston's new memoir
We Can Be Heroes is out now!

Paul Burston runs the hugely successful Polari Literary Salon which has attended HuddLitFest for over 10 years! The salon gives a platform for LGBTQ+ writers to showcase their work and is always one of our most anticipated events.

In June Paul released his new book We Can Be Heroes, a memoir and survivor's story. It has been receiving incredible reviews like the following from Booker Prize winning author Bernardine Evaristo: "a compelling and hugely enjoyable memoir about a fearless life lived to the full"

The book can be bought from a number of retailers all listed on his website

Specifically, it is a book about ‘Man’s best friends’ – their origin-myths, and their place in the world before they were co-opted into human society and ideas of pure breeding and dysgenics.

Michael has released a number of highly acclaimed books including King Crow, Walking the Invisible, and Ill Will: The Untold Story of Heathcliff.

The Dogs is available on Bookshop.org as well as other retailers

Our Teacher's a Troll

Written by Dennis Kelly

Directed by Tina Shuker-Abell

What do you do if you get to school one day and your new head teacher is a troll? Not just a mean and ghastly human, I mean an actual troll? One who bites off children’s heads, and makes the non-headless ones work in a goldmine! This is exactly what happened at Sean and Holly's school. They need to tell someone but who would believe them? Their mum? The Police? How about the Prime Minister?

Join them on their quest to put an end to the crunching of children in the classroom!

Theatre Royal Wakefield’s young theatre-makers In on the Act present this terrifically trollerous tale for all the family.

From design classics to cutting-edge catwalk creations, Beyond the Little Black Dress deconstructs this iconic garment and examines the radical power of the colour black in fashion.

Discover how the nuances of the colour black have made the little black dress a contradictory garment, from the well-mannered cocktail attire of the early 20th century to the leather and latex worn by members of punk and fetish subcultures.

Incredible. Exceeded expectations. Western Ireland is so beautiful. Add to that a small group (van was perfect), great guide, great accommodations, and no worries (like driving on the “wrong” side on narrow roads) and it all equals a perfect vacation.

Turtle Doves in the Downs

Have you seen a turtle dove recently, or perhaps heard their iconic purr?

Turtle dove populations have declined by 98%, with only 2,100 breeding territories left in the UK, down from an estimated 125,000 in 1970. This makes them the UK's fastest declining bird. Loss of habitat and lack of food sources are believed to be the biggest cause for their decline. However, a significant number of the remaining breeding territories are in Kent, giving us a unique opportunity to help conserve this emblematic species.

Operation Turtle Dove is working across the South East to save this bird on the brink, working with landowners to create turtle dove habitats and providing supplementary food.

You can play a part in turtle dove recovery by reporting sightings, creating a turtle dove habitat or making a donation to the cause.

Places to visit in the Kent Downs

Looking for inspiration for your next adventure in the Downs? Look no further! Here's our top spot to visit this July...

Folkestone Downs

The ancient chalk hills behind the seaside town of Folkestone form part of the North Downs escarpment that runs through Kent and Surrey. The chalk grassland on the steep south-facing slopes of the Downs is some of the richest for wildlife in the UK and the whole site is accordingly designated both a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

The North Downs Way National Trail passes along the crest of Folkestone Downs and links with Folkestone Warren to the east. There are also many other established paths to help you explore. The chalk grassland is at its best in spring and summer.  Look out for Adonis blue and marbled white butterflies, straw belle moth, yellowhammer, kestrel, adder, and chalk grassland wildflowers including orchids.

White Cliffs of Dover Path Upgrades

Part of the White Cliffs of Dover has recently had a face lift to ensure people can access the footpath all year around.

The Kent Downs AONB worked with Kent Country Council, the National Trust, and Natural England to deliver a £150,000 footpath upgrade and to restore the fragile chalk grassland at the top of the cliffs.

Summer Orchids in the Downs

Did you know there are around 52 different species of wild orchid in Britain, and around 25 of these can be found in the Kent Downs AONB.

Our special landscape is the only place in Britain where wild orchids such as the late spider orchid and lady orchid can be found. In fact, it’s our iconic chalky grassland, that’s low in nutrients, combined with our warm climate that makes the Kent Downs one of the best regions in the country for orchids.

Check out our summer orchid blog for species to spot and where to find them.
