Library Adventures header- showing a lady reading to children

Library Adventures - 19th July 2023...or is that 1890?

1890's photo of children sailing boats on the boating lake in Greenhead Park

To celebrate the start of the summer holidays, we thought we'd share this image from the 1890s of children enjoying themselves at the boating lake at Greenhead Park.

Did you know that at Kirklees Local Studies Library on Victoria Lane in Huddersfield you can look at old photographs of the place where you live? If you can’t get to the library why not  take a look at the Kirklees Image Archive  https://kirkleesimages.org.uk/

For any enquires, please call: 01484 414868 or email localstudies.library@kirklees.gov.uk

Opening Times:

Monday: 9am – 7pm
Tuesday: 9am – 5pm
Wednesday: 9am – 5pm
Thursday 10am – 7pm
Friday: 9am – 5pm
Saturday: 9am – 4:30pm

If you are looking for a summer holiday project with the family, why not utilise all that the
Kirklees Local Studies Library has to offer? They collect and preserve information reflecting the diverse communities of the area, inspiring people to enjoy their local identity and heritage.

You might want to use us to research your family history, the history of a local place, the story of your house or something significant that happened in the area. That could be last week or a hundred years ago.

Our resources can be found online and in physical books, newspapers, maps, photographs, periodicals and a sound archive We collect and preserve sources of information about the area, both ancient and modern. We also have connections with partner organisations for broader research and can advise on other sources.

Storywalks

Image of the book Once Upon a Time and some children and geese on a Storywalk

If our 130 year old photo of Greenhead Park has got you in the mood for getting out and about in our beautiful parks this summer, why not try out one of our popular Storywalks which take place in parks across Kirklees this summer? The theme is music, and we'll be showcasing the beautiful book Once Upon A Tune, written and illustrated by James Mayhew

Quirky Campers is thrilled to present Hilda The American School Bus, the first of her kind to join the Quirky fleet.

If her extensive yellow exterior isn’t enough to capture your attention, just wait until you step inside. From the outside in, this sustainable home on wheels is nothing short of spectacular, with the majority of her build materials being reclaimed and thrifted. Her bohemian features and cleverly crafted layout make Hilda the perfect place to escape the rat race.

Arguably one of the most impressive areas in Hilda is her luxury indoor bathroom. Fitted with crisp clean white tiles and a rainfall shower. ‘But what about a bath?’ we hear you ask…oh she has that too! The bathtub for one is the ideal spot to enjoy a cold glass of bubbly and get lost in a good book. At the heart of the bus is Hilda’s magnificent kitchen area. With plenty of worktop space, an LPG 3 burner hob, oven and grill and a large variety of cooking utensils. This space will inspire all, from novice cooks to master chefs.

No need to worry about how you're possibly going to turn a corner or where you're going to park at the supermarket. Hilda is static, so all you need to do is get there and set up camp.
