Events and Activities in the Library. Tom Palmer Award Winning Author of Sport Stories. Penalty Shoot Out, Story and Quiz.   Join Tom Palmer for a penalty shootout in the library with reading quiz and story. A penalty shootout – in Bradford libraries The award-winning children’s sports fiction author, Tom Palmer, is coming to Bradford Libraries next week to help libraries to promote reading for pleasure as part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. Tom will be visiting two libraries in the Bradford district as part of a tour of 20 public libraries across the country. He will be hosting a penalty shootout, as well as a quiz about reading for pleasure around sport at City Library and Manningham Library on Wednesday 26 July.  There will be two sessions at City Library at 11am and 1pm and a third session at Manningham Library at 3.30pm. The events will appeal to children 8-12 years old and booking is essential. Libraries and sport mean everything to Tom, he said: “I struggled with reading as a child, but eventually became a book lover through borrowing sports fiction, non-fiction and biography from public libraries.” This year’s Summer Reading Challenge in public libraries is called Ready Set Read and is all about getting children reading through sport. Tom Palmer is one of the UK’s leading children’s sports fiction writers and has won 25 regional and four national book awards for his fiction. With the Women’s World Cup being competed for throughout his tour, Tom is the author of eight books in which the main character is a girl who plays sport. These include the Rocky Race (sister of Roy of the Rovers, who now has her own spin off series) books, Secret FC and Armistice Runner, about a female fell runner. They collect and preserve information reflecting the diverse communities of the area, inspiring people to enjoy their local identity and heritage. You might want to use us to research your family history, the history of a local place, the story of your house or something significant that happened in the area. That could be last week or a hundred years ago. Our resources can be found online and in physical books, newspapers, maps, photographs, periodicals and a sound archive We collect and preserve sources of information about the area, both ancient and modern. We also have connections with partner organisations for broader research and can advise on other sources.   Storywalks If our 130 year old photo of Greenhead Park has got you in the mood for getting out and about in our beautiful parks this summer, why not try out one of our popular Storywalks which take place in parks across Kirklees this summer? Book Review: Being You- Poems of Positivity We love Daniel Thompson's superbly written, joyful collection of poems to counter whatever life throws at us. Julia's Murray's gorgeous illustrations reinforce the positive messages that spill out of this book. It's certainly a great place to start if you want to put a more optimistic spin on the way you see the world.
