National Geographic Kids: Greeking Out

Life just keeps getting better for Greek mythology fans! After eight seasons, National Geographic Kids' award-winning, #1 kids and family podcast, Greeking Out, has now spun off a witty tie-in book by Kenny Curtis and Jillian Hughes, who also happen to be father and daughter. Get ready for Greeking Out: Epic Retellings of Classic Greek Myths.

“It’s been an amazing experience to get to work together professionally,” Hughes told PW. “Kenny introduced me to the world of imagination and creativity by telling me the world's best bedtime stories. He inspired me to become a writer myself.”

Years later, those bedtime stories have not gotten old, even though some of them have been around for hundreds of years. “The themes and lessons are still relevant today,” Curtis said. “You can learn a lot about things like the responsibility of leadership and power, the importance of courage, and the value of wisdom from Greek myths. You’ll also encounter baby-eating parents, shape-shifting, divine prophecies, and a large number of cows.”

The 20 myths Curtis and Hughes have gathered together feature fan favorites from the podcast as well as never-before-aired stories. As Curtis says, truly “there’s something for everyone.”

This newsletter was produced in partnership with National Geographic Kids.

Catching Up with Kenny Curtis and Jillian Hughes

Greek myths are alive, well, and inspiring a new generation. Greeking Out: Epic Retellings of Classic Greek Myths (National Geographic Kids) introduces readers to a pantheon of characters, from Athena to Zeus. Father-daughter writing team Kenny Curtis and Jillian Hughes spoke with PW about the circuitous manner in which the book came about (“from book to podcast to book”) and about refashioning the classic heroes, monsters, warriors, and decidedly dysfunctional families to appeal to today’s audience.

Greeking Out: Epic Retellings of Classic Greek Myths has an interesting backstory! Can you talk about the inspiration behind the project?

Curtis: We went from book to podcast to book. The Greeking Out podcast was originally a promotional idea to support Crispin Boyer’s Zeus the Mighty book series. In that book, the animals at the Mount Olympus Pet Center listen to the Greeking Out podcast and fancy themselves to be the ancient Greek gods. After one season, we realized that the podcast was quickly developing a life of its own and that kids and families really responded to the straightforward, fun approach we took to the stories and characters. And after eight seasons, it made sense to take those stories and wrap them up in a book!

Bookstores Feel the Love

Supporters rallied around two bookstores in need last week. After New York City’s Yu & Me was ravaged by a fire on July 4, a GoFundMe campaign has so far raised more than $200,000 to help the store renovate and get back on its feet. And when Chicago’s Exile in Bookville was forced by a NASCAR event to shutter for four days—losing an estimated $15,000 in sales—an influx of coordinated online orders helped ease the blow. In other bookstore news, Tattered Cover in Denver has named Brad Dempsey as interim CEO of the local bookstore chain. Speaking of new management, House of Anansi has a new publisher and World Editions has a new owner. And finally, last week we lost two members of the international literary community, Ukrainian author Victoria Amelina and Dundurn Press founder Kirk Howard, who died at 37 and 80, respectively.

"We Are Not Going to Let This Happen"

At this year's American Library Association Annual Conference, which wrapped up last Tuesday, the fight against book bans was front and center, as librarians shared strategies to resist censorship and an all-star lineup of speakers—including Judy Blume, Amanda Gorman, and Ibram X. Kendi—affirmed the importance of the freedom to read. For Blume, who also owns a bookstore in Florida, this fight hits close to home, remarking that "not a week goes by that I don't have people in the store who are teachers, who are librarians, and who are being hit with this." She added: "We are not going to let this happen." Slowly but surely, more publishers are intervening. The New Press is pushing back against Florida's Stop W.O.K.E. Act, which the nonprofit publisher argues has “chilled the distribution” of its books on the state's campuses. Meanwhile, Penguin Random House, which recently participated in a lawsuit against a Florida school district over banned books, has also had a busy week internally, launching of a new pop-comics imprint, merging two of its children's imprints, and extending a buyout offer to PRH employees of a certain age.
