Cinema on the Square: A day of outdoor screenings from Leeds Film

A crowd stands in front of a big stage with a large screen on it, in front of a dusky sky. A movie plays showing four boys walking down a trainline. TEXT: Cinema in the Square

30 July / Millennium Square

As part of the Summer Series, an annual series of outdoor gigs from world-renowned blockbuster acts, we’re transforming the Millennium Square into an outdoor cinema with a lineup of unforgettable films to celebrate music, movies and the joy of summer; all for just £5 a ticket!

We'll be starting the day with the hit musical reboot of the beloved childhood story, Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical, followed by the 80's coming-of-age summer classic Stand By Me, starring River Phoenix and Keifer Sutherland. In the evening we'll be screening Summer of Soul, a hugely inspirational concert film made with lost footage of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival and featuring performances by Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, Nina Simone and more.

So join us Sunday 30 July for Cinema on the Square and make your own unforgettable summer memories watching our handpicked selection of films on the big screen.

CINEMA ON THE SQUARE: What's ON

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical

Several schoolchildren dance and sing with flags in front of their school.

Sunday 30 July / 1:00pm / Millennium Square

A dazzling new musical adaption of the nostalgic childhood tale. Matilda is a young girl gifted with a keen intellect and special powers that she must use to deal with her crude, distant family and help free her kind teacher from their sadistic, child-hating headmistress (played by an unrecognizable Emma Thompson).

Stand By Me

Four young boys stand in the woods, one of them pointing ahead.

Sunday 30 July / 3:45pm / Millennium Square

A landmark of 1980s cinema and the quintessential coming-of-age film, Stand By Me is an enduring look at friendship, mortality, and the adventures of youth. Set on a warm summer’s day in 1950s rural Oregon, four boys head out on a hike in search of the body of a local missing boy, determined to become town heroes.

Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)

An amalgamation of different black musicians from the 60's in an artwork style from that time period.

Sunday 30 July / 6:00pm / Millennium Square

Over six Sundays during the summer of 1969 the Harlem Cultural Festival featured world famous musicians such as Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson, The Staples Singers, Nina Simone, BB King, Sly and the Family Stone. Incredibly, this footage was neglected for 50 years until it was recently restored and returned to audiences by Questlove. Lose yourself to the unforgettable soundtrack and be transported back to the summer of soul in this acclaimed concert film, showing on the big screen in our open-air cinema.

Now its doors have finally reopened to the public with a fantastic new programme for the summer.

Returning and new programming strands include; Cinema Africa, the best of new and intriguing African cinema, supported by Leeds African Communities Trust; Hyde and Seek, screening family-friendly films, from magnificent animations to spellbinding classics; Creatures of the Night, iconic sci-fi, horror and cult delights shown during those magic late-night hours; and Tuesday Wonders that focuses on inspiring documentaries, exploring our weird and wonderful world.

Hey hey hey! ☀️

July has rolled around quick, which means that Leeds Poetry Festival is back with more incredible poetry and spoken word from the 10th-16!

We’re so excited to be one of the chosen venues for this festival and will be hosting some of their performances, workshops — and even a pop up book store — here at Left Bank.

There’s more going on in the LS6 neighbourhood too, with some brill events at Hyde Park Book Club and a Poetry Bistro at Rainbow Junktion Cafe.

All of us here at Left Bank are proud to be supporting such an awesome indie festival that’s showcasing a growing scene here in Leeds — celebrating local talent and bringing in performers from further afield too! There’s definitely something for everyone in their lineup. And it's a great opportunity to listen to diverse voices exploring some really important topics.
🙌

Of course, we have to give a big shoutout to the organisers for all their hard work pulling Leeds Poetry Festival together. Now in its 3rd year running, 2023 looks like it’ll be the best one yet! Thanks as always for bringing it to Left Bank — we love having it here in the building.

Our much anticipated summer exhibition opens tomorrow.

From design classics to cutting-edge catwalk creations, Beyond the Little Black Dress deconstructs this iconic garment and examines the radical power of the colour black in fashion.

Discover how the nuances of the colour black have made the little black dress a contradictory garment, from the well-mannered cocktail attire of the early 20th century to the leather and latex worn by members of punk and fetish subcultures.

Celebrate with St James Quarter

In celebration of the opening of Beyond the Little Black Dress, St James Quarter invites you to a stylish brunch and fashion showcase at Duck & Waffle Edinburgh on Tue 4 Jul.

Spotlight On: Beyond the Little Black Dress

Join curator Georgina Ripley on Thu 13 Jul to explore design classics and cutting-edge catwalk creations in an in-depth introduction to the exhibition.

Incredible. Exceeded expectations. Western Ireland is so beautiful. Add to that a small group (van was perfect), great guide, great accommodations, and no worries (like driving on the “wrong” side on narrow roads) and it all equals a perfect vacation.
