October 2018 - Green Theme

What's New?

This week I've been re-reading and reviewing some of the wonderful books in our shop that help children learn about and connect with ecology and the environment.

When the future of the planet is tied into decisions the younger generation make today, it’s crucial to have conversations about the environment with our children. But how do we talk about such complex issues, bound up with science and politics, in an engaging way? Books with a ‘green theme’ can provide a useful starting point!

September 2018 - 3 Books That Made Me Happy

What's New?

Three new books in particular have been causing a great deal of happiness here at Bags of Books this week. With 'oohs' and 'aahs' and much gasping and giggling being regularly heard from both staff and customers, I thought I'd better share these little (not literally, two are actually rather large) gems with you!

I Am the Seed That Grew the Tree:  A Nature Poem for Every Day of the Year

Almost certianly the most gorgeous book of the year so far! This wonderful poetry book, named after the first line of Judith Nicholls' poem 'Windsong', is a lavishly illustrated collection of 366 nature poems - one for every day of the year.  Filled with familiar favourites and new discoveries from a wide variety of poets. We love it!

What a Wonderful Word

A charming collection of untranslatable words from all over the world! For example, did you know that the Spanish have a word for someone who is always cold? In German there is a word meaning 'A supposed improvement that actually makes things worse', and Shlimaz in Yiddish is a person who suffers from relentless bad luck!    A fun and fascinating celebration of the magic of language!

Into the Jungle: Stories for Mowgli

This beautiful companion to the classic 'The Jungle Book' consists of a collection of short stories about the man-cub Mowgli and his adventures among the animals in the Indian jungle. It includes all the original favorites like Baloo and Bagheera and sheds light on the back-stories of other characters, like Mother Wolf. The stories come together in an exciting finale, in which the animals of the jungle must work together, finding unity in their diversity.  Beautiful illustrations throughout make this a book to be treasured!

September 2018 - Picture Books about Friendship

What's New?

With children all over the country now heading back to school for the start of the new school year, I thought we'd take a look at one aspect of school life that all children have to deal with... Friendships.

Childhood friendships are such an important part of school life, but can often be something of a minefield to navigate and can sometimes prove a huge challenge for young children.

Little ones just starting at nursery or school will probably take some time to get to grips with how making new friends works, and all children have friendship blips from time to time.  We've put together a collection of picture books which aim to help young children understand what it means to be a good friend and how to handle friendship problems.  There are some fabulous stories here to share, all with a positive message about friendship, including:

Don't Miss...

Flying off our shelves this week is the latest in the 'Oi Frog' series by Kes Gray & Jim Field.  'Oi Duck-Billed Platypus'  is another brilliantly funny, rhyming picture book that begs to be read aloud.  In this story Duck encounters lots of animals with impossible-to-rhyme names.  We all know that frogs sit on logs and cats sit on mats, but where are duck-billed platypus meant to sit? Or the ostriches and hippopotamuses?  Now 20% off as one of our Books of the Month.

I'm only a few short chapters in to Bone Talk but I'm loving it so far and can tell the rest of the novel is going to take me on quite a journey!  This fabulous new novel from acclaimed author Candy Gouley is set amongst a remote tribe in the Philippines. She describes it as, "an adventure set right in the middle of a cultural collision, when turn-of-the-century American soldiers encountered a headhunting Filipino warrior people. What was it like to encounter the outside world for the first time? What was it like to meet your invader and to realise that everything you knew was about to change?"  Best for 11+
