Young Northern Writers’
Awards 2019
If you are – or if you know – a young writer, these
awards are for you. We’re looking for young people who love to write –
whether it’s poetry, songs, stories, rap or blogs – we want to hear from
them.
There are two awards available, the Young Northern
Writer Award and the Matthew Hale Award, and you can either enter the
awards as a young person or you can nominate a young person if you are an
adult.

We’re on the road
Over the past two weekends we’ve been meeting new and
emerging writers in Sunderland and Leeds at our writing fiction and writing
for children roadshows. It’s been great to meet so many new writers as well
as to see some familiar faces. Thanks to everyone who has joined us so
far.
Our next stop will be in York, at our poetry
roadshow, which is suitable for poets at all stages of their careers. We’ll
be speaking to some previous winners of Northern Writers’ Awards, Caleb Klaces, Phoebe Power and Kit Fan, about
developing their poetry careers, as well as hearing from the latest
recipients of the New North Poets programme, who will share their new work.

Creative Writing for
Teachers
Creative Writing for Teachers will take place in
Gateshead from January 2019, with five meetings over the remainder of the
academic year. The popular course, which is now in its seventh year, offers
teachers the chance to work with a range of professional writers and
facilitators to develop their own creative writing skills. The workshops
allow for both personal and career development, as well as being a space to
share ideas and reflect with peers on teaching creative writing.
