William Goldman was one of the great
screenwriters of all time. His loss this year will be felt for a long time by
anyone who has ever studied the structure and construction of movies. In this
column, we hope to examine the structure and anatomy of scenes that are, for
lack of a better word, perfect and Goldman crafted a lot of them.
To my mind, All the
President’s Men, based on a stunning true story with a brilliant
screenplay from Goldman, is one of those movies full of these perfect scenes.
It’s a film that brings the elements of character, plot, and drama together
in a way that is undeniably right.
The first scene I want to go through is one that comes during a particularly
trying time in the film. Read More...

The science fiction/fantasy script that will
grab the film executives’ attention should contain more than magical and
fantastical elements—or characters who can perform wizardry—or rely purely on
the anticipated CGI—the writer’s goal, your goal, is to have the reader
suspend disbelief and not get stuck on unnecessary stumbling blocks. Your
goal as the writer is to go beyond derivative. Go beyond stereotypical
characters and create a compelling screenplay! Enroll Now...

Nestled neatly among this season's holiday
films is a delightful twist on a classic to be released on December 19th. An
all new original musical and sequel, Mary
Poppins Returns brings the practically-perfect nanny with unique
magical skills to the help the next generation of the Banks family find the
joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss.
Currently living in New Jersey, the two-time Academy Award-nominated
screenwriter David Magee was brought on board to help create the story. But
what he learned is that this was no traditional story he was telling.
"The interesting thing about the PL Travers books is that virtually
every chapter is a stand-alone adventure," Magee described, "we
wanted to build a story that incorporated those elements in an original
narrative."
Magee wasn't alone in the creation of this massive creative vision. He shares
his insights of what it was like to work and collaborate on such an
incredible film. Read More...
