Professional writers may or may not receive critical acclaim, but they are in control of their craft, improving over the years and making a living from the art. A struggling writer may, at times, produce quality, but day-to-day they cannot consistently make their talent perform. The difference between these two is simple.

Do The Work.
Professional writers may or may not receive critical acclaim, but they are in control of their craft, improving over the years and making a living from the art. A struggling writer may, at times, produce quality, but day-to-day they cannot consistently make their talent perform. The difference between these two is simple.
Real writers do the work.
Pascal once wrote a long drawn out letter to a friend, then apologized in the postscript that he didn't have the time to write a short one. Like Pascal, writers of any medium learn that economy is key, that brevity takes time.
Excellence means perseverance.
When a struggling writer realises a scene doesn't work they make a coffee, or break for lunch. In the afternoon, they'll tinker with the scene, kill some time on Youtube, before scrolling through their social media feeds.
A professional writer writes and rewrites, putting in the long, tough days, knowing that the road from day one to final draft is never smooth, and rarely paved with cat videos. A professional must write throughout every day, line by line, page by page.
A writer must do the work.

Discover how writing is about thoroughness,
not shortcuts, at McKee's STORY Seminar.
