Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes 26 November 2018

The Cleckheaton Writers Group took place on Monday evening at Cleckheaton Library where myself, Gemma, Cassie and Kathy were in attendance, Sarah, Mandy, Pauline and Alice having passed on their apologies.

There were no minutes from the last meeting.

WIP updates: Gemma has now completed 36 1/2 thousand words of her novel during NaNoWriMo (total WIP 60k). Cassie has started attending a U3A writing class where she undertakes writing projects once a fortnight. The last one she had to write about sounds and smells at the seaside, and brought the piece along for feedback. Kathy has written more on her Tobias WIP. I have written more on my new WIP for NaNoWriMo, which has taken it to just over 38.5k words and have written a short story which I brought for feedback.

Feedback sessions: I shared my short story 'Wedding Favours' which was inspired by the creative writing challenge that Pauline set (if you could get away with murder, who would you choose and why). The darkly comic twist in the tale story was well received, members saying they could imagine it in a magazine. Cassie shared her 'Letter to governors' piece which was hilarious. It was well received and members suggested she enter it into a competition. Kathy then shared a section from her new cosy crime murder story which was also amusing and intriguing. We all can't wait to hear more from this story.

CW comps/workshops/events: I attended the Northern Writers Awards roadshow featuring Hachette at Leeds art museum on Saturday where they gave details of two new awards - one for a childrens/YA novel (the winner to be mentored by Hachette) and a short story collection one. The Lucy Cavendish novel award for women, unpublished, competition is still open. It costs £12 per entry and the deadline is February 2019. Members were reminded about the second CLF anthology launch taking place at Heckmondwike Library on Tuesday 27 at 5.30pm.

CWG Christmas Do/2019 first meeting: It was decided to hold the CWG Christmas Do at Obediah Brooke Wetherspoons in Cleckheaton starting at 6pm on Monday 10 December. All members are welcome and we may be joined by potential new member Shaz too. The first meeting of the CWG in 2019 will be on Monday 7 January at the same time and place.
