Library Adventures - 4th May 2022

Get ready for a marvellous May, full of reading adventures!

Image including LAL! logo, photos of authors and book covers

We were so thrilled with last term's online events and we can't wait to share with you what's coming next!

On 17th May we have Sue Cheung, author of Maddy Yip's Guide to Life, a madcap new story from the winner of the Diverse Book Award. This book is filled with belly-laughs and packed with drawings. Find out about Sue's inspirations for this story about Maddie and her quest to find her talent while inspiring your children to uncover their own hidden talents.

Sue is followed on the 24th May by Caryl Hart sharing her delightful picture book Thank You for the Little Things with themes of well-being, mindfulness and family.

On the 7th June Annemarie Anang will be discussing her musical extravaganza of a book: I Am Nefertiti. This heartwarming, joyous, empowering story of identity and belonging is perfect for younger children - and the young at heart!

We're excited that on the 14th June Tarah L Gear will be appearing on Library Adventues Live! fresh from the launch of her engaging new picture book. Just Like Grandpa Jazz explores themes of intergenerational relationships, race and dual heritage.

We're proud to announce the headline act of this term will be the heroic Phil Earle, one of the most talented and unique voices in children's literature. Phil will be introducing his eagerly anticipated new novel While the Storm Rages on Thursday 23rd June.

"A truly brilliant story of courage and resilience and exceptional animals. This wartime Incredible Journey (only far, far better) is definitely Phil Earle's best yet" -- Emma Carroll

This follows on from the phenomenal success of When the Sky Falls which was named the Times’ Best Children’s Book of 2021 and is shortlisted for the Carnegie medal.

Book Review

Image of the author Matt Goodfellow, illustrator Shu Lin and the cover of the book Shu Lin's Grandpa

Shu Lin's Grandpa by Matt Goodfellow, ilustrated by Yurong and reviewed by Poppy

I really loved this book because it was so inclusive and showed Chinese culture. This book is a really inspiring story. It showed that everyone's culture and differences should be accepted. My favourite page is the fold out page because the art work was gorgeous. The rest of the book was brightly coloured and there was a real contrast, although the dragon was brighter and stood out. It was really interesting how the illustrator had given all the characters personalities and it was interesting how it had different angles from different people. I enjoyed the incorporation of dragons as they represented Chinese culture very positively.

Wow! said the Owl Exhibition at Cleckheaton Library

Have you had a trip to Cleckheaton Library to see our awesome interactive exhibition yet? You can visit at any time during opening hours.

Based on the much-loved children’s book, Wow! Said the Owl by Tim Hopgood, the exhibition has been specially designed by Tim Hopgood and The Young Art Explorers team to appeal to families and especially under five-year-olds, with lots of sensory and interactive elements.

In the book, a little owl stays awake during the day for the first time and is amazed by all the colours she sees, ‘Wow! Said the Owl as white fluffy clouds floated across a bright blue sky’. The exhibition seeks to give children the same sense of wonder and amazement by introducing them to colours and inviting them to be creative by playing with shapes, puppets, costumes and drawing.

Look up Cleckheaton Library's opening times and find out more about the exhibition.
