Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes, meeting Monday 9 May 2022

Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met last night with Barbara, Karen, Alice and Gemma in attendance, Cassie and Kathy having passed on their apologies.

The minutes from the last meeting were passed.

WIP updates: Karen took part in #CBNPitch and #WMPitch plus entered the SCBWI April Slushpile. She has also written a potential new beginning to one of her MSs. Alice attended the Pitch Workshop and #CBNPitch and #WMPitch. She has finished April Bootcamp and exceeded her target, including lots of words written at the Write Magic night hike. As she was reworking her picture book she came up with a new picture book idea and has started on that. Gemma has been in touch with the caretaker at the old asylum to book a tour in Wakefield. She has also put aside a research book at the Huddersfield Book Fair on asylums and has had an idea for a self-help book. Barbara has written a short story for the Autocrit competition which she had brought along for feedback. This is a U.S. competition and the 2-5k words story has to have a theme of community. Entries start next week and the prize is to have your story printed in an exclusive book.

CW comps/workshops/events: The WriteMentor Mentorships opened on 1 April. There is a free crime writing workshop on Zoom taking place at 12noon U.S. time on 10 May 2022, the Kate Nash Contemporary Romance competition deadline is 15 May and there are just under two weeks left to enter the CFWA 2022 for fiction and poetry, the theme is ‘How it Started’ and the deadline is Sunday 22 May. The WriteMentor novel in development award, a £10 fee'd competition closes on 16 May 2022 and the BPA First Novel Award on 29 May 2022.

Feedback sessions: Barbara shared her as yet untitled short story. It had a great first line and red herrings plus some fab Yorkshire comedy. All the members thought Barbara had a clear writers voice and wished her luck for the competition. Alice shared a section of the beginning of her Upper MG MS Project Nightmare which she is considering entering for the Write Mentor novel in development award. Members felt the writing was strong, the child's nightmare vivid and that she had chosen an intriguing place to end the piece which made us want to hear more.

Writing plans: Barbara will enter the Autocrit competition once she has given her story a title. Gemma will visit the asylum and work out chapter one of her MS. Alice will consider entering the Write Mentor novel in development award with her upper MG MS and keep writing regularly.

The next meeting of CWG wil take place on Monday 23 May 2022 at 5.30pm at Cleckheaton Library.
