Saturday
15 June: Pop-up film screening celebrating Kirklees’ textile heritage
in an extraordinary disused mill.
As
part of Woven Festival, we are bringing together two short film
screenings that celebrate the history of Kirklees textile industry
over the last century.
Alistair
I Macdonald’s Ripping Yarns explore the innovative and imaginative
practices around textiles in Kirklees. From reusing textiles to
create parts for Aston Martin, to benefitting mental health with
mindful crafting, to designing bespoke carpets for Paris Fashion
Week, audiences so far have been inspired by the textiles innovations
happening right on our doorstep.
The
screening will take place in the beautiful disused James Walker
cotton factory at Holme Bank Mills in Mirfield and is completely
free. Before the screening, you can also get to have a go at hand
tufting in Andrew Warburton’s studio.
Join
us from 3pm, we only have a couple of tickets remaining so grab them
while you can from here.
Please note: due to the nature of the building this screening is not
fully accessible as there are steps into the working space. Please
contact us on hello@creativescene.org.uk for
full access information.

Comedy,
curry and a great night out next week at Hanging Heaton Cricket Club
You
might have already seen in this week’s Telegraph
and Argus that we’re getting ready to welcome The Chef
Show to Hanging Heaton for one night only on Wednesday 19 June at
7.30pm.
The
Chef Show is an award-winning sketch show meets comedy play about a
typical night at your local curry house by BBC Radio Leeds’ Nick
Ahad.
Inspired
by Nick's own experience of working in his dad’s take away, two
actors play the all the usual (and unusual) characters who walk
through the door on a Saturday night. From the father and son who
can’t agree on how to run the family restaurant, to the raucous hen
party that can’t decide if they want poppadums, you’re sure to see
someone you recognise.
The
cast will be joined by Akeel Ahmed, the manager at our very own
Lala’s in Batley. Making his stage debut, Akeel will be cooking a
delicious curry live on stage and offering free samples after the
show.
Come
and enjoy a great night out with us at Hanging Heaton Cricket Club –
you could even get a gang together and make the most of our four
for £20 deal.

Our ‘We
The People’ season continues with JOAN, the story of history’s
greatest underdog – coming to Dewsbury and Birstall in July.
We’re
celebrating Pride Month at Creative Scene by getting ready to welcome
the award-winning JOAN to Dewsbury and Birstall.
Drag
King champion Lucy Jane Parkinson plays one of history’s greatest
gender-warrior Joan of Arc herself (plus all the men she defied) in
this gutsy, musical retelling of her life.
Packed
with rousing music and cabaret flair, JOAN will show you what it means
to stand out and stand up for what you believe in.

part in brilliant art experiences in the areas where they live,
work and socialise. 91% of our audience come from neighbourhoods
