Do you like to be beside the seaside?

Can you help our young people?

Can you help our Young Producers bring their ideas to life? Pledge today: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/paper-peace

A team of 48 young producers (18 - 25 yrs) around the country have been working for a year on training and heritage programme Paper Peace. Here in Kirklees, we have been working with Iqra, Alicia, Hamish, Jonny, Corrie, Chris, Josh and Shazia, guiding them as they uncover the history of peacebuilding, activism and community in West Yorkshire.

All their hard work will culminate in a large-scale, day-long free arts event which is going to take over Dewsbury’s town square, streets and marketplace on Saturday 9 November 2019 and go on to tour the country. It will be a response to the many attempts at fracturing our communities, from hate-speech to economic marginalisation. It will inspire people from our community to contribute to peacebuilding in their everyday lives, celebrating diversity and working together as a community.

But their ideas are still growing. They, and the other Young Producers across England, want to work with poets from each of their communities to create a national Peace Poem, translate it into every language spoken in their communities, and turn it into a public artwork for everyone to experience. They also want to turn their extensive research into a month-long artwork to sit in Dewsbury town centre in the lead up to the main event on the 9 November.

To give this group of Young Producers the best possible start to their careers,
Emergency Exit Arts have launched a national fundraiser so we and the Young Producers in Stoke-on-Trent, Peterborough and Swale and Medway are able to work together to transform our communities into a celebration of peace.

All donations matter to our team of Young Producers and no matter your contribution it is hugely appreciated.

If you’re able to donate then please visit
 www.crowdfunder.co.uk/paper-peace to pledge.

Do you like to be beside the seaside?

'The Charity'  by Alistair I Macdonald, produced by Creative Scene for Woven.

Missed our screenings of Woven in Film? Alistair I Macdonald's six short films about the innovative textile businesses in Kirklees are now available to watch on YouTube.

'Interesting and moving' - audience member.

This month our area's long and proud textiles heritage was celebrated with Woven, a festival of events exploring the past, present and future of the trade in Kirklees.

We premiered Ripping Yarns, a series of short tales from the textile trade that highlight innovative businesses in Kirklees. These businesses are pioneering practices such as recycling unwanted clothes in order to generate electricity, using digital technology to push the boundaries of textile design and recycling denim to soundproof cars.

If you missed our screenings, or you'd like to re-watch these fascinating short films, watch them on our YouTube at the link below.

'Ordinary people creating an extraordinary product' - audience member.

The latest news and events from Creative Scene...

What's On - June/July 2019

We don't normally send out our June/July newsletter looking out at rainy, grey clouds, but we hope that our upcoming events can help brighten up your day a little bit!

Don't forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for all the latest information on what we've got going on.

Saturday 15 June: Pop-up film screening celebrating Kirklees’ textile heritage in an extraordinary disused mill.
As part of Woven Festival, we are bringing together two short film screenings that celebrate the history of Kirklees textile industry over the last century.
Alistair I Macdonald’s Ripping Yarns explore the innovative and imaginative practices around textiles in Kirklees. From reusing textiles to create parts for Aston Martin, to benefitting mental health with mindful crafting, to designing bespoke carpets for Paris Fashion Week, audiences so far have been inspired by the textiles innovations happening right on our doorstep.
The screening will take place in the beautiful disused James Walker cotton factory at Holme Bank Mills in Mirfield and is completely free. Before the screening, you can also get to have a go at hand tufting in Andrew Warburton’s studio.
Join us from 3pm, we only have a couple of tickets remaining so grab them while you can from here.

Please note: due to the nature of the building this screening is not fully accessible as there are steps into the working space. Please contact us on hello@creativescene.org.uk for full access information.

Comedy, curry and a great night out next week at Hanging Heaton Cricket Club
You might have already seen in this week’s Telegraph and Argus that we’re getting ready to welcome The Chef Show to Hanging Heaton for one night only on Wednesday 19 June at 7.30pm.
The Chef Show is an award-winning sketch show meets comedy play about a typical night at your local curry house by BBC Radio Leeds’ Nick Ahad.
Inspired by Nick's own experience of working in his dad’s take away, two actors play the all the usual (and unusual) characters who walk through the door on a Saturday night. From the father and son who can’t agree on how to run the family restaurant, to the raucous hen party that can’t decide if they want poppadums, you’re sure to see someone you recognise.
The cast will be joined by Akeel Ahmed, the manager at our very own Lala’s in Batley. Making his stage debut, Akeel will be cooking a delicious curry live on stage and offering free samples after the show.
Come and enjoy a great night out with us at Hanging Heaton Cricket Club – you could even get a gang together and make the most of our four for £20 deal.

JOAN

Our ‘We The People’ season continues with JOAN, the story of history’s greatest underdog – coming to Dewsbury and Birstall in July.
We’re celebrating Pride Month at Creative Scene by getting ready to welcome the award-winning JOAN to Dewsbury and Birstall.
Drag King champion Lucy Jane Parkinson plays one of history’s greatest gender-warrior Joan of Arc herself (plus all the men she defied) in this gutsy, musical retelling of her life.
Packed with rousing music and cabaret flair, JOAN will show you what it means to stand out and stand up for what you believe in.
Join us on 25 July at The Leggers Inn and 26 July at Birstall Community Centre - get your tickets here.

Check out the trailer for JOAN
