John Fox & Pound Of Flesh

at The Holbeck, a community club for everyone
run by Slung Low

We're looking forward to a busy day down at The Holbeck with an exciting double-bill! We start with a special Big Ideas conversation with the legendary John Fox and then catch an Edinburgh Fringe preview from Pound Of Flesh, an exciting young company we met at the National Student Drama Festival this year. Hope you can make it!

5pm: John Fox presents -
'Engineers of the Imagination'

In our Big Ideas series, inspirational practitioners discuss their passion projects.

The celebrated co-founder of Welfare State International (with Sue Gill) and one of the leading alternative theatre makers of his generation is coming to speak about his experiences and the values that are the foundation to his work.

7pm: Pound of Flesh present -
'Fire Our Shoes Have Made'

Excalibur, equipped. School, skipped. Six months ago, when they lost their Mum, their names shot past the sun and echoed through the stars. Today they become the greats they’re destined to be. A journey through a city like London; one with trolls and warlocks, goblins and knives. For 13 year old Jay and 8 year old Saskia, this is the biggest quest of their lives.
A mash-up of gig theatre, live foley and hip-hop influenced slam poetry, this modern fable takes audiences to another world. Performed by multi-award winning company Pound of Flesh, Fires Our Shoes Have Made brings classical storytelling into a stylish, contemporary form.

Hello New York,
This weekend’s wild guide is packed full of quirky fun like a skate party from the ’90s, Tequila Fest at Coney Island and more! 🍹🎶
There’s an uninhabitable island in NYC and it’s hosting a gladiator-like battle known as the Battle for Mau Mau. 🏹🤸
We love a sassy and body-positive brand and ThirdLove is showing face in NYC with a pop-up! 👙🏙
Previously unknown data has now surfaced, allowing for a visible representation of lead levels across the US. 🏠
We’ve claimed to have the best bagels, pizza, and bacon with egg and cheese sandwiches but award-winning tap water too? 🚰🎉
Song: Beyonce - Brown Skin Girl
Game: SimCity BuildIt by Electronic Arts
Prized Tap Water
After being included as one of the tap water contestants during the New York State’s Regional Metro Tap Water Taste Test competition, New York City was rewarded for their placement.
Testing with around 40 on a readable dissolved solids meter, NYC's water supply gets praise for scoring on the higher spectrum in the U.S. Thanks to the watershed protection programs held in place, the supply of unfiltered water for the public is considered not only safe but of excellent quality.
Let Your Inhibitions Loose
Watch some influential films on a scenic rooftop, take a tequila shot with jerk chicken in your other hand or head down to MoMA PS1 for fresh electronic music.
We aren't sure what your weekend calls for but we are sure something in our Wild Weekend Guide will hit the nail on the head. Make sure to explore the timing of the events so you can attend as many as possible during this wonderfully sunny summer weekend!
Battle of Mau Mau
Test your inner gladiator by signing up for an authentic battle! If you want to see a showdown on a secret island in NYC, one that tests stealth and endurance, you're not in luck. The Battle of Mau Mau is everything previously described but it's also top secret.
Hosted on an uninhabitable island in Brooklyn, the only people allowed in are the fighters themselves. Competitors will complete tests of strength, agility, and stamina throughout the event. As cool as that would be to see, there are no press lanes. If you're curious you'll have to attend as a warrior and experience it first hand.
Garments for Everyone
A ThirdLove pop-up shop is opening in the city and taking aim at one of the most popular brands around, Victoria's Secret. The co-CEO and co-founder Heidi Zak, secured in Forbes' list of 100 people transforming business, had launched the business in order to cater to women who needed a bra that fit properly and convenience.
ThirdLove's mission to be inclusive of all bodies, orientations, and identities is one challenging the standard of beauty that mainstream undergarment companies haven't been able to shake.
Lead Levels in NYC
NYC's shining exterior doesn't make up for its history. Old pipelines and paint are undercover and can prove deadly in homes and office spaces. A new interactive map allows viewers to investigate lead levels in correspondence to median household income.
The map covers all 5 boroughs and reveals enough to locate a disturbing correlation between living conditions and wealth. One spot on the map, which you'll be able to find on your own, had toxicity levels nearly tied with Flint.
