Siddhartha

Siddhartha
By Herman Hesse

“Reading Siddhartha was a very important moment for me in a point in my life when I was young, angry, and wanted to be anywhere other than where I was. After I moved around a bit and gained some life experience, one of its main lessons came through to me as a truth I have followed ever since—life is where you are right now, so nurture it and watch it grow.”

Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice
By Jane Austen

Pride and Prejudice is one of the most famous love stories in literature, but for my money, the best thing about it isn’t the romance. The novel is brilliant—sly, satirical, sharp, funny—but it always feels warm-hearted. Plus, Austen gave us one of the most beloved protagonists ever in the bookish, witty, Elizabeth Bennet. This classic is pure comfort to me, and I’ll read it and reread it forever.”

Staff Picks: Read Our Recommendations

August's book picks come from Jenny, a production manager at Crown who is convinced she was born with a book in her hand. She lives in her houseplant forest/apartment and spends all her free time drinking tea and rearranging books.

The Library at Mount Char

The Library at Mount Char
By Scott Hawkins

This book is weird in all the best ways and reminded me of why I love fantasy so much. The characters were weird, the situations were weird, even their clothing was weird... but it was a GREAT kind of weird that made you want to keep reading to find out what was going on. It’s one of my favorite books that I’ve read in the past ten years.

The House at the Edge of Night

The House at the Edge of Night
By Catherine Banner

This book tells a beautiful story of a home that housed a family for four generations worth of people. I never got tired of it and loved following the Esposito family throughout the years. By the time I was finished, I felt like I’ve lived another lifetime with them.

The Stars Are Fire

The Stars Are Fire
By Anita Shreve

I feel like I went on a rollercoaster ride of emotions with Grace (the main character), which made me really enjoy reading this. You go from almost bored in Grace’s simple life, to being swept up in the whirlwind of the aftermath of a fire. I was also satisfied with the ending, and with the book as a whole. This book has a great, strong female protagonist, the plot was strong, and the characters were well developed.
