It’s back! The Kirklees Concert
Season Orchestral events start on Thursday 20 September and
we have a cracking opening concert for you. Returning to the
concert hall with conductor Garry Walker, the Orchestra of
Opera North perform Scottish-inspired gems along with a popular
favourite, and former Classic FM Hall of Fame No.1, Bruch’s Violin
Concerto No. 1 with guest soloist Jack Liebeck.

Arnold - Four
Scottish Dances
Inspired by folk tunes and featuring a melody from one
of Scotland’s national treasures Robert Burns, the dances are pure
escapism to the Hebrides. These light-hearted dances evocatively pull
the senses as a scenic panorama unfolds until the piece escalates into
a whirlwind of tartan in a lively, full-bodied orchestral fling.
Debussy —
Scottish March on a Popular Theme
Fanfare flourishes, coloured orchestration and lush
harmonies. General Meredith Reid commissioned Debussy to create a march
using traditional melodies from the Ross clan. Barely a march in its
traditional context, Debussy’s contribution to our Scottish evening has
a mysterious opening that progresses into a rousing finale.
Bruch — Violin
Concerto No.1
We’re thrilled Jack Liebeck returns to perform one of
the most popular violin concertos for you; Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.
1. The dazzling virtuosic passages, the swelling sound of passion and
intensity building towards the climactic finale - this concerto
showcases the delicate abundant beauty of the string instruments,
making the violin sing with every note.
Mendelssohn —
Symphony No. 3
In a sanctuary of inspiration, Mendelssohn’s Symphony
No. 3 was born in the ruins of Holyrood chapel. Beautifully
encapsulating each section of his Scottish tour, you can hear the
barren landscapes of the heather-strewn hills, the dark and stormy
weather met on the bleak hills and finally the eruption of sunlight on
the mountain peaks as the full orchestra is finally unleashed in a
radiant third movement. A fitting finale to our Scottish-inspired
evening.
