The Mother of All Losses

A Brighton-based editor is looking for stories from people whose mothers have died for inclusion in an anthology published in 2020. Submissions can be in many forms; essay, poetry, prose, graphic strips, painting etc. If you’re unable or hesitant to write, transcribing is possible. The Editor is looking for a range of voices and experiences – stories by people who may have lost their mother years ago, some recently; some may have had good relationships, some bad, some deeply complex. The anthology aims to be inclusive in its contributors and broad in the experiences it depicts. For more information, email themotherofalllosses@gmail.com.

April 2018 Update

Breaking free of the good, liberal poem

Daljit Nagra
“We should seek to shock, to embarrass, to prod the reader … There is beauty in a swear word used well, or a satirical attitude that is nuanced but defiantly hostile. There is beauty in a vile character so long as complex dramatization takes place”.

Our poetry judge Daljit Nagra explores how a range of voices in your work can make poetry “ alive to the needs of a broader set of moods and aesthetics”.

The Bridport Prize is the flagship project of Bridport Arts Centre, Dorset, UK and raises vital funds for the continuation of its work.
