With thanks to Hannah from Get Lost Yorkshire:

Weekly Escape

Hey

Have you ever stumbled across something in the Yorkshire Dales that made you stop and wonder… “What on earth is that?”

On a past walk near Aysgarth, I did exactly that.

Standing quietly on a grassy ridge overlooking Wensleydale were three strange stone structures - one shaped like a rocket ship, another like a pepper pot, and a third resembling a gateway from another world.

These are the Sorrelsykes Follies. And they might just be one of the most unusual hidden gems in the Yorkshire Dales.

Unlike abbeys, castles or stately homes, follies were built purely for decoration. No real purpose. No practical use. Just imagination, wealth… and perhaps a touch of eccentricity.

But what makes these follies even more intriguing is that no one knows for certain who built them - or why.

Local legends point to the Tennant sisters in the 19th century, but beyond that, the details fade into mystery.

Finding them isn’t just about reaching a destination either.

It’s about experiencing a beautiful circular walk filled with waterfalls, peaceful riverside paths, sweeping views across the Dales… and the quiet thrill of discovering something most visitors never even realise exists.

If you’re following the usual Dales walking routes, you could easily miss them completely.

That’s exactly why I created a step-by-step guide showing how to find the follies, where to park, and how to plan the perfect scenic walk.

If you love uncovering Yorkshire’s lesser-known stories and landscapes, this is one adventure you won’t want to miss.

Until our next adventure,
