APRIL 2026

Can you smell that?
Spring in the air? The freshly cut grass? The machine grease on The Warehouse shutter?

Our season of pay what you decide shows is just around the corner and in April we have more squonky puppetry from theOBJECTproject, car mechanic and life skills from Matt Miller and an overarching view on humanity from some Goths by Audrey Cook.

Preparations in the space are nearly finished. The only thing missing is you. Have look at what's going on and we look forward to seeing you soon!
Saturday 4th April
7.30pm

theOBJECTproject return to Slung Low with their latest slice of clown/puppet dystopia, following in the wake of PIXIEMATOSIS and The Ballad of the Underwater Daughter.
It’s a hand-cranked, clanking puppet world where everyone and everything feels irretrievably lost. But it’s all ok because something is watching over them. Something huge and warm and fuzzy almost like happiness… except with massive bone crushing arms.

When Matt was little, their dad bought a classic car. A 1954 Sunbeam Talbot Mark II. Dad had ideas that he and Matt would do it up, repair, rebuild together.
Now in their 30’s, Matt would like to learn how to fix a car engine. Matt can’t do this alone, which is tricky for a solo show.
That’s where Matt’s drag alter-ego Natalie Spanner comes in.
Matt and Natalie will try to ask, in an increasingly broken world, how might we repair ourselves, together?

Fantasy meets punk with a Teesside twist.
A joyfully chaotic celebration of youth expression and identity.

Join celestial beings Sid and Viv as they keep a watchful eye on the streets of Middlesbrough. Their office might be in a dingy basement, but the streets they look in on are far from drab and gloomy.

There's more too. Have a look at the rest of the season - we're so excited and hope you are as well.

Staying In

Tile The Bathroom In Style

Some people paint, some wallpaper – but most like to give their bathroom the tile treatment. ‘A carefully chosen tile scheme can make a bathroom feel serene and restorative, rich with texture, or quietly playful depending on the story you wish the space to tell,’ says Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca’ Pietra. ‘And that sense of atmosphere is what turns an everyday room into somewhere you genuinely enjoy spending time.’ There’s also plenty of room for playfulness when it comes to tiling. ‘Tiles allow you to introduce colour, pattern and texture in a way that paint or other materials often can’t handle in a wet space,’ confirms Lee Thornley, founder of Bert & May. ‘From full wall installations to tiled vanity splashbacks or statement floors, tiles can really shape the character of a bathroom while still being highly functional.’ Whether you fancy pattern-maxxing, colour drenching or all-over tiles, we have plenty of expert ideas in our handy guide to get you started.

Going Out

Book Tickets To Salon Privé

Returning to Royal Hospital Chelsea this April is Salon Privé London, the UK’s most exclusive motor show. Amid a classic English garden party-style setting, the hotly anticipated three-day event offers a chance to get up close to some of the world’s finest cars and classics from the likes of Aston Martin, Maserati, and Porsche. But it’s not only about the motoring displays; guests can also enjoy shopping, fine dining, and plenty of Pommery Champagne, with tempting hospitality packages available to book. Each day offers something different: opening day on Thursday kicks off with signature parades and exciting vehicle unveilings, while Friday is Ladies’ Day, where guests are encouraged to don their finest attire and catch displays like Lotus Drivers Club’s 50th Anniversary showcase. The grand finale is Supercar Saturday, where visitors can expect a special Italian Glamour presentation from Maserati Club UK, a line-up of limited production supercars from SCC Private Members Club and much more. 16 – 18 April 2026, salonprivelondon.com

Property Of The Day

If there’s one man always guaranteed to make a grand entrance on the red carpet, it’s Colman Domingo. The former Met Gala co-chair is known for standing out, often forgoing the usual penguin tuxedo for a bold print, bright colour or daring cape. And though you may never be able to recreate his most iconic looks, you can do one better by snatching up his LA home.

On the market for $2,049,000, sothebysrealty.com

Little Luxury

Give your kitchen a spring upgrade (or treat someone this Easter) with this chic Bobbin Egg Rack from Alfred Newall. Made by hand from solid oak and available in red, green or a mix of colours, it holds 12, 24, 36 or 48 fresh eggs. £125, alfrednewall.com

Competition Time

Want to escape to a Greek island surrounded by crystal blue sea? Now’s your chance to win a three-night stay at Casa Cook Samos on a half board basis.

Psssst…

After many years of work a new walking trail spanning the entirety of England’s coastline is officially opening today, named The King Charles III England Coast Path. At nearly 2,700 miles it’s the longest managed coastal walking route in the world – and includes a stretch through the Seven Sisters, which has just been formally declared England’s newest National Nature Reserve.

Whatever You Do, Don’t

Miss the upcoming wine tasting event from Berry Bros. & Rudd, which offers an exploration of biodynamic and regenerative viticulture. You’ll learn about the innovative producers who are crafting wines that don’t cost the Earth – with plenty of sampling along the way. 27 March 2026, book at bbr.com

Black Grouse Lek
Photography Experience

Black Grouse leks are a truly special spectacle on a crisp spring morning. Often heard before they’re seen, the cock birds’ distinctive bubbling calls carry across the still moorland as they gather to display, posture and spar for the attention of visiting females — an unforgettable wildlife ritual at dawn.

Join us for this remarkable experience, meeting your guide at the Coats Room car park in the early hours.  You’ll be transported to a secluded spot on Glen Tanar Estate and guided into a Tragopan HOKKI V3 ground hide, carefully positioned for an intimate yet unobtrusive view of the lek. You’ll remain in the hide until the birds disperse naturally around 8:30am, after which you’ll be welcomed to a remote cottage to warm up by the fire with tea or coffee.

Limited availability: 6–16 April 2026| £225 per session.

Spring Walks
Our favourite walks in Glen Tanar

Spring is a great time to explore Glen Tanar on foot. The estate is quieter, the light is changing, and you start to notice small shifts in the landscape – from early wildflowers to more activity in the woods.

Riverbank Path - Along the Water of Tanar
An easy route following the river, with open views and a steady pace underfoot. You'll hear the water before you see it in places, and it's a good option for a shorter walk.
Accessible on main paths.

4.7 Km/ 1hr 20, Difficulty: Easy

Old Pines Path - Through the Pine Forest
The forest trails offer something more sheltered, with wide paths winding through the Caledonian pine. It's a calm, steady walk and a good place to spot red squirrels if you're lucky.
8.3 Km/ 2hrs, Difficulty: Easy

Mount Keen
For those looking for more of a day out, Mount Keen (Scotland's most easterly Munro) offers a well-known route with a steady climb and wide, open views from the top. It's a longer and more challenging walk, but a rewarding one on a clear spring day.  Please ensure you take appropriate clothing and equipment and have an up to date weather forecast for the area.
30.1 Km/ 9 - 10 hrs approx, Difficulty: Challenging

All starting points for walks are accessible from the main car park, or if you are staying with us on the estate, direct from your accommodation. Please ensure you are equipped for the weather.

Happy St Patrick's Day

Hi

There’s a sparkle in the air in Ireland today, a hint of mischief, a dash of excitement and the frantic hunt for something green to wear.

Today is St Patrick’s Day, and suddenly even the quietest villages are bursting with music, laughter and a little bit of chaos.

Tractors lead parades, bright costumes and and the sound of fiddles fills the streets, and pubs come alive with songs, stories and a few well-earned pints. From Galway to Dublin, the magic is the same, playful, joyful and unmistakably Irish.

How will you be celebrating this year? A quiet toast, a lively parade or perhaps a song or two? However the day unfolds, we hope it brings a little music, laughter and Irish spirit your way.

And who knows — perhaps next year you’ll be celebrating St Patrick’s Day here in Ireland with us, experiencing the parades, the pub sessions and a bit of craic agus ceol for yourself.

Dates for the Diary:

Join us to watch ‘Transit’, our next free film screening in partnership with Cultures of Film!

Transit (2018) is a drama by Christian Petzold that blends WWII-era narrative with a modern setting to create a haunting, timeless story of exile.

The film follows Georg, a German refugee who escapes to Marseille after Nazi forces occupy France. To gain passage out of the country, he assumes the identity of a deceased writer whose travel papers he carries. As he waits in bureaucratic limbo, Georg becomes entangled with the writer’s estranged wife, Marie, who is desperately searching for her missing husband—unaware Georg is living under his name.

The story explores themes of identity, displacement, and the ghostlike state of refugees caught between past and future, rendered in a surreal world where historical and contemporary elements coexist.

A Spotlight on the Archive...

This month we are showcasing our new collection containing a series of notes created for Operation Bernhard during the Second World War.

The goal of the Operation was to initiate the collapse of the British economy by dropping forged banknotes over Britain during the Second World War.

143 skilled Jewish prisoners were identified from different concentration camps and sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Berlin. There, in blocks 18 and 19, they were forced to produce forged banknotes under the supervision of SS Major Bernhard Krueger. In the camp, the prisoners were separated from other inmates and were not allowed to interact with them. This was to ensure the Operation was kept an absolute secret. Survivor Jack Plapler describes how they were given more leniency than other inmates, and were allowed to smoke, had Sundays off, and could go to bed when they wanted to when the work day was over. They were, however, certain that they would be killed for their knowledge of such a top-secret operation, and they constantly feared for themselves and their relatives.

The notes they produced were of such high quality that they were used to fund Nazi intelligence operations, and £100,000 in counterfeit money was used to help free Mussolini during the 1943 Gran Sasso raid. Even so, the prisoners managed to secretly employ tactics to communicate the truth about the counterfeits. Survivor Adolf Burger describes how prisoners would pierce the top left corner of the notes on purpose, through the effigy of Britannia, a place where “none of the King’s subjects would ever allow themselves to pierce” (My Encounters with Adolf Burger, pg. 135).

At the end of the war, most of the notes were dumped into Toplitz Lake in Austria, where they remained until 1959.

According to the Bank of England, Operation Bernhard notes continued to turn up in circulation right up until 1964.

For further information, take a look at:

  • Adolf Burger, The Devil’s Workshop: A Memoir of the Nazi Counterfeiting Operation (1983)
  • Film: The Counterfeiters (2007)
  • Forging Secrets: Faces and Facts Inside the Nazi Operation Bernhard Scheme (2022)

Reflecting On Our Community Events

We’re reflecting on our communities programme here at Holocaust Centre North and the conversations we’ve had, the art we’ve created, the stories we’ve shared and the conversations we’ve had. We’ve made soundscapes, talked about experiences of hiding and fleeing from Nazi persecution alongside people’s experience of seeking asylum here in the UK and facing perilous journeys to reach safety here in the North of England.

We celebrated our shared values and hopes as we celebrated Hannukah and we remembered together with survivors, partners and the community for Holocaust Memorial Day. We’ve shared poems of hope with Batley Poets, we’ve shared cultural traditions with IASK and Huddersfield and District Jewish Community and hosted a national consultation on a new Refugee Archive with the University of Westminster, IASK and 6 Million +.

Our community workshops were built on the rich diversity, traditions, and relationships within our local communities, bringing people together to celebrate what unites them, increase a sense of belonging and strengthen local bonds.

We’re excited for where the next year will take us!.Keep an eye on our website and social media to see how you can get involved in future sessions.
