Dear Reader,

Brown fashion was my concern yesterday. I'd been invited to Ladies Day at Cheltenham – which typically fell on a savagely blustery, rain-strewn grey Thursday. It had sent me into an apoplexy of sartorial stress because brown is not a feature colour in my wardrobe. And then a jaunty hat is required if you're going to do it properly. And don't get me started on tweed; I love the idea of it, but it's just not for me. Luckily though, because I edit a magazine called Country & Town House, I know perfectly well the people who can help me out. Jade Holland Cooper is the self-styled queen of Cheltenham. In fact, every time I open the C&TH Instagram feed, she's there showing a masterclass in nailing the pulled-together-by-the-racetrack look. I tip my baker boy cap to her: she's built a multi-million-pound empire on this stuff. But I'm a mix-and-match kind of girl, so I also dropped by Really Wild in Sloane Square, owned by another formidable woman, Nadja Swarovski. The rails are a Cheltenham girl's dirty dream and I scurried out with a Jess Collett trilby. Now, with the right tools, it was up to me to make them mine so I can feel like me. And that's what style's all about: feeling like yourself, even when you're dressing for the moment.

Watch The Other Bennet Sister

Last year may have been the 250th anniversary of her birth, but Austen fever is far from waning. As Netflix works on a new version of Pride and Prejudice by Dolly Alderton, the BBC is delving into Janice Hadlow’s 2020 novel The Other Bennet Sister to tell a revisionist origin story about the lesser-known Bennet, Mary. North Yorkshire rising star Ella Bruccoleri takes the title role, with Richard E. Grant and Ruth Jones as her inimitable parents. While the story opens on familiar terrain, it soon whisks Mary into a radical beyond. Taken under the wing of her uncle and aunt, Mr (Richard Coyle) and Mrs Gardiner (Indira Varma), Mary becomes a governess to their three children and finds two love interests in the form of Mr Hayward (Dónal Finn) and Mr Ryder (Laurie Davidson). Bruccoleri’s Mary isn’t an Austen heroine that will feel familiar. She is fraught with a sort of ‘self-hatred’, the actress reflects, reciting the adage that ‘Elizabeth Bennet is who Jane Austen wants to be, and Mary Bennet is who she’s scared she really is. It’s essentially her journey trying to find love, human connection, independence and, I think most importantly, self-acceptance.’ Sunday, 8pm, BBC One.

Prioritise comfort in your home design

When designing our homes, it’s easy to get swept up in trying to replicate picture-perfect Pinterest boards. But instead we should be focusing on how we want our spaces to make us feel, argues Hatta Byng in our latest issue. ‘Of course beautiful things give us pleasure and make a room inviting,’ she writes. ‘But as designer Rita Konig urges in her course for Create Academy, we must start with being honest with ourselves as to how we will use a room and what sort of life we lead. You may have visions of yourself sipping cocktails with friends on your white linen sofas in an elegant drawing room, but if you live in a small flat with two young children who are also using the space, it is not going to work. It will be deeply disappointing when sticky hand prints appear on the sofa and you are tripping over bits of Lego more often than you are enjoying a dirty martini. When I ask designer Lucy Hammond Giles – who to my mind creates very beautiful, special rooms – if there is ever a case to put aesthetics before comfort she replies emphatically “never”.’ Read the full piece here.

Recipe of the Week…

Honey Cake

This indulgently sweet and sticky honey cake from The Langham Afternoon Tea Book is perfect for treating your mum, godmother, grandmother or any beloved maternal figure in your life on Mother's Day this Sunday. It's straightforward to make, divine to eat and fills the kitchen with a delicious citrus-y fragrance. We tested the recipe in advance, halving the ingredients and using a standard single cake tin, and it still worked like a dream. If you're feeling the Bake Off vibe, you could test your patissier skills on one of the more advanced recipes, such as vanilla and salted caramel millefeuille. Or heck, just book a table in Palm Court at the Langham, where they've been serving afternoon tea since 1865.

Ingredients

  • 4g finely grated lemon zest (about 2 unwaxed lemons)

  • 4g finely grated orange zest (about 2 oranges)

  • 325g dark muscovado sugar

  • A pinch of salt

  • 240g eggs, lightly beaten

  • 150g 35%-fat cream or whipping cream

  • 260g T45 or 00 flour

  • 5g baking powder

  • 100g unsalted butter, melted

To assemble

  • 220–250g clear honey

  • 100g pearl sugar

You will also need

  • Six 10cm round silicone moulds, 3cm deep, greased with butter and lined with baking paper

Method

  1. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle, combine the lemon and orange zests with

the sugar and salt and mix on low speed for 1 minute to extract the oil from the zests.

  2. Gradually add the eggs and cream to the bowl, mixing continuously until smooth.

  3. Sift the flour and baking powder into the bowl and mix until almost combined.

  4. Add the melted butter and mix again until smooth. Bake immediately, or cover and

  5. chill the mixture overnight.

  6. Heat the oven to 160°C fan.

  7. Weigh 180g of the cake mixture into each mould and bake the cakes for 30–35 minutes, until well risen and a skewer inserted into the middle of each comes out clean.

  8. Leave the cakes to rest for 3–4 minutes in the moulds, then remove them and leave to cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes.

See Self Esteem in Teeth ‘n’ Smiles

London’s West End is always a bustling hub of activity – and this weekend, there’s even more reason to visit the capital’s theatre strip. David Hare’s rebel play Teeth ‘n’ Smiles returns to the West End for its 50th anniversary today, with Rebecca Lucy Taylor (aka musician Self Esteem) stepping into the role of struggling rock star Maggie Frisby. Following the singer on a booze (and fury) fuelled night at a Cambridge college ball, Teeth ‘n’ Smiles tells the story of a great band’s collapse amidst the decline of 1960s counterculture. Revived for another round on the West End – with additional music and lyrics by Taylor – it promises to be a hit. ‘I’m deeply honoured to be bringing Teeth ‘n’ Smiles back for its 50th anniversary,’ said the singer. ‘I love to challenge myself in new forms and I can’t wait to slap you round the face with Maggie.’ Running 13 March – 6 June, tickets from £28.95. teethnsmilesplay.com

Read Hooked by Asako Yuzuki

In early 2025, almost every bookshop in the country had one canary-yellow, cow-emblazoned bestselling title front and centre: Butter. Penned by award-winning Japanese author Asako Yuzuki in 2017, translator Polly Barton brought the culinary thriller to the UK market with her English translation in 2024 – and, centring on a journalist investigating a food-obsessed accused murderer, it was an instant hit. And now Barton is back, delving into Yuzuki’s back catalogue to bring her 2015 novel, Nairu pachi no joshi-kai (Nile Perch Women's Club), to our bookshelves. Renamed Hooked with a striking pink fish can cover, it’s another deliciously disturbing tale set in contemporary Japan exploring food, womanhood and loneliness as an obsessive relationship unfolds between a straightlaced housewife and a brash woman unafraid of subverting social norms. Out today.

See The New David Hockney Exhibition

A Year in Normandie by David Hockney

British artist David Hockney’s new exhibition is now open at the Serpentine. At the heart of the show is A Year in Normandie, a 90m-long piece inspired by the historic Bayeux Tapestry that captures the changing seasons at Hockney’s former studio in Normandy. It is the artwork’s first time coming to London – corresponding perfectly with the Bayeux Tapestry returning to the city later this year for the first time since its creation in the 11th century. In our latest issue, former minister for culture Ed Vaizey writes about the time he met Hockney at a creative industries event during the London Olympics back in 2012. ‘The poor Queen was standing on a podium in front of us, where for an hour she received the great and the good of the arts world,’ he remembers. ‘We both marvelled at her stamina.’ He adds, ‘Hockney, of course, has spoken out against the tapestry coming to London, arguing that moving it will risk irreparable damage to this hugely fragile art work, surely one of the masterpieces of the modern world. I disagree. It is a risk worth taking, if only to revive interest in this extraordinary piece – and perhaps to remind the Brits of our European heritage. In any event, Hockney’s homage will be a masterpiece in itself.’ Until 23 August, serpentinegalleries.org

Watch Louis Theroux: Inside The Manosphere

‘Do you consider yourself a misogynist?,’ asks Louis Theroux in his latest documentary Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere. The ultra-masculine influencer (or so he brands himself) being questioned thinks not: ‘I love women and I actually understand them [...] They want a guy that can dominate them and lead them.’ It’s enough to make you want to switch off the TV… but like much of Theroux’s work this eye-opening and important watch is about more than sparking rage. The 90-minute interrogation takes us into the manosphere – an online community based around an extreme, anti-feminist narrative which promotes wealth, physical appearance and power over women as key markers of manhood. As well as interviewing influencers fuelling the movement across Miami and Marbella, and hearing the perspectives of the women in their lives, Theroux explores the role social media platforms play in the growing subculture. It’s out today, a year after Netflix’s three-part series Adolescence (which deals with similar themes), and promises to be just as impactful. Watch on Netflix

Make The Most Of Hispi Cabbage Season

The trendiest veggie of 2026, cabbage is available year-round due to staggered harvesting of different types. Come March, it’s time for the hispi – arguably the most voguish variety of them all – to shine. But how to spruce up the humble ingredient? Rob Howell, chef-patron of Root restaurant (with outposts in Bristol, Bath and Wells), has shared his favourite way to cook it with our newsletter readers. ‘Our Caesar dressing has made its rounds on a lot of vegetables and dishes through the years – cheesy and garlicky, it’s pretty easy to get carried away,’ he says. ‘This dish just seems to top all the others we’ve tried it with – who knew the highlight of a meal could be a humble cabbage?’ Give it a go this week, and find out what else is in season this month here.

Hispi Cabbage With Caesar Dressing

Ingredients

Caesar dressing

  • 25g Dijon mustard

  • 20ml chardonnay vinegar

  • 2 egg yolks

  • 330ml neutral oil

  • 100g old Winchester/ Parmesan cheese, grated

  • 1 clove of garlic

  • 1 tsp cracked black pepper

  • 1 lemon juice/half zest

  • Salt

Hispi cabbage

  • 2 hispi cabbages

  • 2 shallots, thinly sliced into rings

  • Pickling liquid

  • 2 tbsp of neutral oil

  • Extra cheese to grate over top

Method

  1. To make the Caesar dressing, we start by making a mayonnaise base and then add the additional ingredients to that.

  2. For the mayonnaise, combine the yolk, vinegar, salt and mustard in a bowl and whisk together, add the rapeseed oil slowly to create an emulsion. It is easier if you have someone to hold the bowl for you. This can be done with a mixer or electric whisk. When all the oil has been added you will have a mayonnaise.

  3. Take 2 tbsp of mayonnaise and add to a blender along with the grated cheese, garlic, black pepper, lemon juice and zest. Blend the mixture with a little water, approximately 50ml, so it can blend freely. Now fold that mixture back through the mayonnaise and taste, more seasoning may be needed or perhaps a little more garlic if you are into that.

  4. For the pickled shallots, peel and slice either with a mandolin or by hand and place in a container with a pinch of salt to help soften the shallots before pouring over the pickling liquid.

  5. To prepare the cabbage, remove any larger hard outside leaves and cut in half – if you have a large cabbage cut in quarters. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil. Place the cut cabbages into the boiling water and cook for 4-5 minutes depending on size, making sure they are fully submerged. Remove from saucepan and drain in a colander, pat dry. Finish the dish by charring the hispi cabbages, coating them with a little oil and seasoning before cooking on a hot griddle, char grill or frying pan. Leave to cook on each side for about 6-8 minutes until it is really charred and the outside of the cabbage has coloured well.

  6. Place on a chopping board and slice through the cabbage to create nice slices, making sure you use the stem, just cut through it a little thinner. Have a large salad bowl or serving plate to place onto, toss the hot cut cabbage with a good few spoonfuls of the Caesar dressing. When satisfied that the hispi is dressed appropriately add a good covering of pickled shallots and finish with an extra grating of cheese.

Go To Cheltenham Festival

Kicking off the 2026 social season today is Cheltenham Festival, the most prestigious jump racing event of the year. Every March, more than 260,000 people flock to The Jockey Club for four days of top-class horse racing, an annual affair that can trace its roots as far back as 1860 (though the meeting as we know it today has returned annually since 1911). It’s a week of drama and high emotion, with moments of pure theatre thrown in for good measure – culminating with the highly-anticipated Gold Cup on Friday 13 March. If you’re keen to see the best of fashion, go on Ladies Day (Wednesday), where guests don their finest outfits with the hopes of winning gold in the Best Dressed competition (we’ve got some style tips here). Mainly there for the vibes? There’s plenty going on off the track, from shopping to live music to food and drink. Michel Roux Jr’s Chez Roux is back for 2026, serving up a four-course menu and plenty of Moët champagne, or you can keep it casual at The Horse & Groom Pub, which overlooks the final two fences of the racecourse. For an insider’s tip, former jockey and racing broadcaster Alice Plunkett recommends heading to the Guinness Village – ‘that’s where to go if you want to feel the buzz of Cheltenham and hear live music and have fun! ’ 10 – 13 March, thejockeyclub.co.uk

 Spice Up Your Hallway Setup

Kerb appeal might be crucial, but when it comes to really transforming your home for guests, potential buyers or just your own peace of mind, decluttering and updating your hallway is guaranteed to make a difference. ‘It sets the tone before a single living space is seen; it is where first impressions are formed,’ confirms interior designer Sarah Ferreira. ‘The atmosphere here should feel deliberate and cohesive, not accidental. A well-considered hallway quietly communicates the style and mood of the rest of the house.’ And while the hallway has its own set of unique challenges – often dark and windowless, limited on space, prone to wear and tear, and short on storage – when styled right, it can feel like one of the most characterful areas of the home. ‘If you treat it as a room in its own right, it will transform how the whole house feels,’ emphasises Hattie Hansard, Interior Designer at Joanna Wood. ‘Even small details – a beautifully framed mirror, a well-shaped chair, a basket for umbrellas, a scented candle or diffuser – elevate the everyday ritual of coming home.’ Ready to feel inspired? Check our guide here.

Try A Michelin-Worthy Burger Collab

Cornwall-born, two-Michelin-starred chef Jordan Bailey is no stranger to elevated cooking – so he naturally made headlines when he opened up a new spot in Borough last summer: a burger joint, of all things. But, with a second venue quickly following in Carnaby, you can imagine Heard isn’t just any burger, and March spells the restaurant’s first ever collab. Now ‘feels like the right moment,’ the chef tells us, ‘because we’re ready to push the conversation around what a burger can be.’ Enter Akoko, Aji Akokomi’s Michelin-starred West African restaurant, and sink your teeth into a burger like no other. British beef is seasoned with a fiery spice blend, with hard goat’s cheese and tangy tamarind jam cutting through the fat. There’s also scotch bonnet sosu kaani and Yassa-spiced caramelised onions, all stacked in Heard’s signature butter-toasted roast potato bun. It’s decadent, unctuous and a real triumph of flavour, all served with fries dusted with kelewele salt and a shallot crumb, ready to be dunked in moreish sosu kaani mayo. ‘Collaboration has to feel natural,’ Bailey says. ‘It can’t just be two names on a poster – it needs to be a genuine meeting of like-minded people. Akoko felt like an obvious partner: we approach food from different angles, but we share the same obsession with flavour, detail and integrity.’ To finish, Heard’s ice cream sandwich has also had an Akoko glow up; enjoy calabash nutmeg ice cream and guava jam sandwiched between two white chocolate cookies. Available until 30 April, heardburger.co.uk
